Besides it being Kobe, a globally known figure which was obviously shocking like when Princess Diana died in that car accident, as a parent it is gut wrenching thinking about simply 3 sets of parent/teen-age daughters flying to play in a basketball game and never coming home. It is difficult imagining what their families must be going through right now.

it's times like these that you wish God could tell you how it makes any sense for 3 children to die like that. I am not trying to make this any sort of religious debate and I don't really want any reassurance. I just don't get t.

Jackson less for me, as he just didn't seem very healthy or stable. And ODs among celebrities in general just feel less shocking.

I am pretty certain Kobe wasn't on anyone's celebrity death list.

Michael Jackson was into some weird **** and his death matched up with that.

This is an enormous mega-star on the world stage going down for no apparent reason other than a fluke accident.

Can we not have a contest for which death was more "shocking" on a thread about Kobe Bryant?

Just responding to a post, but you're right. No need to derail.

Some suggestions getting kicked around:
Retire 8 & 24 throughout the league.
And make him the logo.
And no games on 1/26 in the future
And retire his daughter's number in the WNBA.

Or maybe just wear a patch with his number for the rest of the season and make a decision down the road.

Let players and teams celebrate him how they want. A patch makes sense.

All those suggestions are cringey to me.

Broussard and Bayless are jokes in the profession. That whole "show" is cringey.

I look forward to watching the Clippers/Lakers game tomorrow. They'll do something special for sure.

Thought the idea of having each team in the all star game wearing all 8 vs. all 24 was pretty nice.

This whole situation is terrible but seeing the pictures of him and his daughter are ripping me up. To know that she will never get to become who she was going to be. Ugh, so sad.

Although it's sort of a blatant reference to him trying to change his image after all the stuff that happened between 2003 and 2005.

Lived in SoCal for 9 years. Was never a Lakers fan having grown up in Houston but was fortunate enough to be court side for Kobe's last game when he dropped the 60. God just doesn't just gift the world with athletes like this on a regular basis or even generational for that matter.....he was that elite and transcendent. Many will argue his mental approach to Sport is in a rare class of MJ and Tiger.

What impresses me about Kobe is what he has become in the later years as a devoted father, a leader to the next generation of NBA players and his contributions to Youth basketball, the Arts, the Tennis Academy he was a part of........the guy was truly starting to leverage his platform in ways that will leave a lasting void.

I grew up as a Spurs fan. So naturally, I hated Kobe.

I talked **** about him all the time. Said he'd never be Jordan. Said he was no Duncan. Etc.

The older I've gotten, the bigger my respect for him has grown, both as a player and as a person.

The respect he's shown to the Spurs organization (and that the Spurs have shown back to him) says it all really. Truly one of the best competitors in the game. We were lucky to have seen him play. (And as a Spurs fan, I was lucky to have seen the great Spurs vs Lakers rivalry of the 00's. One of the best in all of sports.)

I keep pausing on these pics and the other family pics.

I keep picturing what it is like to be the surviving spouse and having to sit down your other children and tell them their dad (or mom) and sister aren't coming home. Ever.

This event, and too many other events, are good/bad reminders that we can't take life for granted.

Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit"- yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.

Or hearing about both parents and even a child being on board. Gone. In a matter of seconds.

I feel sick. I truly cannot handle these stories.

I feel the same. Growing up he was the nemesis to Duncan's hero along with Dirk, Shaq and Nash. Those guys contributed just as much towards my love of the NBA as Duncan did because they gave meaning to Duncan's greatness. I hated all those guys when I was younger, but I really came to respect all of them.

Kobe's passing feels like a part of my childhood passing and it sucks.

I was very fortunate to watch a court side game of the lakers Vs spurs back in 2012 for my 16th birthday, kobe is a monster on the court, focused and determined. I took pictures that day but I think they are lost. I HATED the lakers and mavs growing up, but as kobe and dirk got older that hate turned into respect, I hated them because they were so ******* good, especially bryant. Every series with them was epic. I still can't believe he is gone, it doesn't feel real

Had forgotten until just now that I got to see him play in person. Team USA scrimmage in Vegas, in 2007.

It turned into Kobe vs LeBron, and the crowd got really into it. Basically an all-star game. What an awesome experience that was.

Had great seats to watch him play his last game at Toyota Center which was his 3rd to last game ever. Dropped an easy 35 on the Rockets in a Lakers loss on a Sunday afternoon. Was one of the best days I've ever had as a sports fan.
