I'm assuming we're gonna do a pick swap. We have Toronto's 2nd rd pick, so we should be able to swap that for 2 lesser picks (or something along those lines).

Was hoping to avoid giving up a first round pick, but I don't hate it. Was done watching Grant Williams play and Seth never played anyway.

Frontcourt has got a lot better today. Hopefully we can go from a bad rebounding team to an average rebounding team.

Gafford and Washington are both only 25 years old and have played a lot of basketball already. Both have 2 more years left on their deals after this year.

I don't see it as losing a pick. It is a pick swap in 2028 in order to trade OKC's 1st rounder to Washington.

But in 2028 OKC will be one of the best teams in the league so it just won't be a very valuable pick.

Edit: You could say we are losing a 1st round pick, but you would have to also say that we gained that 1st round pick in order to trade it.

I'm excited y'all! We have a fully functional roster now!! We got younger AND more talented and didn't lose anyone from our rotation other than Grant Williams (who was the worst player in our rotation).

So this is odd. The Mavs don't currently have a 2024 1st they can trade. Way back in 2019, the mavs sent their 2024 or 2025 1st rounder to the Knicks as part of the Porzingis trade. Both are top 10 protected, so if it's a top 10 this year, the Knicks get the 2025 1st (unless it too is top 10 pick, in which they would get our 2025 2nd). That means they can't trade it now. There's also a rule that says a team can't trade out of the 1st in future back-to-back drafts.

So I may be wrong about this, but it seems like they acquired an additional 1st rounder for 2024 by swapping with OKC in 2028. I don't know if that means the Thunder gave Dallas a 1st rounder just to swap or what. Maybe they are coming in to this certain Dallas will lose Luka and the 2028 pick will be that much more valuable.

Regardless, it looks like for the price of a pick swap with OKC, Dallas is sending Washington a 2024 1st they never had, and they get to keep both of Charlotte's 2nds.

To me, that makes this an even better trade.

You are correct, it is probably OKC's thought process that there is a less than 0 chance that the Mavs are really bad in 27-28 and that pick is really good.

OKC is already good this year and this is supposed to be a historically down draft year, so trading what will be a very late 20s pick this year is no big deal. They also still have so many good young players and so much draft capital that in 2028 they will be title contenders still, so their pick that year will be terrible also. It's an interesting move by them.

Exactly. OKC is betting on Luka leaving and that Dallas pick being very valuable. Dallas is obviously betting that Luka stays and that pick is worthless either way.

Definitely feel like the roster is in a better spot for the rest of this year, and hopefully we start having some luck with health/availability.

I also think the bulk of the rotation is under contract through 2026, which is nice for a change.

I think so, unless we end up shipping one or both of the charlotte 2s to OKC to compensate for the 1st swap. But as another poster mentioned above, they are flush with more picks than they can handle. Still, Charlotte 2s are borderline 1sts at this point.

Mavericks acquiring Daniel Gafford
I love this trade for the Mavs. As good as rookie Dereck Lively II has been, the Mavericks need way more size for any kind of deep playoff run. Maxi Kleber is a really good role player for them, but he's been hurt most of this season. Gafford will provide another presence at the rim on both ends of the floor, and he has a better understanding of what needs to be done in comparison to Lively. That's not a knock on Lively either. He's on par with Gafford in terms of potential impact, but the 19-year-old doesn't really know what he's doing yet. The Mavs have simplified the job the rookie big man has to do, and he's succeeding at it while sopping up experience.
Adding Gafford just takes pressure away from Lively having to play perfectly during this playoff run, assuming the Mavs end up as a top-eight seed in the West after the Play-In Tournament. (They should, by the way.) They might even make the top six to avoid the Play-In altogether. Gafford is a good shot blocker and rebounder. He's also a fantastic rim runner who also can be a big-time vertical threat as a rolling big in the pick-and-roll.
The Mavs' defense is still bad with Lively on the court, but it gets worse when he's on the bench. Gafford should help that, and he can play alongside Kleber in a bigger lineup. Gafford is mobile defensively, so him getting caught on the perimeter isn't a total nightmare for his team. This also means they don't have to play Dwight Powell as a straight-up center anymore, unless injuries hit.
Gafford has two more years after this season at a total of $27.7 million. That is a great value for what he should provide.

Mavericks acquire P.J. Washington, two second-round picks

This past summer, the Mavericks executed a sign-and-trade deal to acquire Williams on a four-year, $53 million deal by giving up Reggie Bullock, a first-round pick swap with San Antonio in 2030 and a 2025 second-round pick swap with Boston. Half a season later, Dallas realized Williams simply isn't the guy it wanted.

By moving him in exchange Washington, the Mavs hope they have improved their frontcourt to better complement Luka Doni and Kyrie Irving. Washington isn't burly like Williams, but he's sleek and capable of being more fluid on offense.
Dallas will need Washington to be a more reliable outside shooter, as he's struggled to improve that part of his game in recent seasons (33.9 in last two seasons after shooting 37.5 percent from deep in his first three). But Washington's shooting stroke looks good, and getting pinpoint passes from Doni should help elevate his chances.
Washington has really improved his ability to score around the basket and moves pretty well without the ball. The Mavericks get away from the modest (by today's standards) but long contract of Williams and bring in a declining annual salary structure with Washington. He's signed through 2025-26, when he'll make just under $15 million.
This should be an upgrade for the Mavs, but it cost them a first-round pick to correct a questionable summer move.

Its not just that he was playing bad, but he wasn't playing aggressive at all. He seemed to just be going through the motions.

Also the Mavs still have $5.5m left of their MLE they can offer him which the Lakers do not. So while he has a path to more playing time in LA, he has more $$ incentive in Dallas (on top of existing relationships with the team).

No Brunson, OG, or Randle (who is a top-20 player when playing the Mavs) for the Knicks tonight. We will have a skeleton team, but so will NY, who traded a lot of depth for guys who won't play tonight.
