Jeter is on pace to collect 218 hits this season.

I've never rooted for the Yankees. Never. But the guy amazes me. I was looking at the all time hit leader list (he ranks 13th) and noticed that at season's end he is likely to accomplish something only 2 other players (Rose and Cobb) have ever done:

Have a 200 hit season after already collecting your 3000th hit.

I don't usually jerk off over stats but this is pretty amazing. He's 38 and still going strong. Most of the guys above him on this list had very little left in the tank after hit #3000.

1. Pete Rose 4256
2. Ty Cobb 4189
3. Hank Aaron 3771
4. Stan Musial 3630
5. Tris Speaker 3514
6. Cap Anson 3435
7. Honus Wagner 3420
8. C. Yastrzemski 3419
9. Paul Molitor 3319
10. Eddie Collins 3315
11. Willie Mays 3283
12. Eddie Murray 3255
13. Derek Jeter 3245
14. Nap Lajoie 3242

Has this been discussed anywhere? I don't watch ESPN or YES...just surf the web.

just avg 150 hits for the next two years will get him into the top 5, truly remarkable

If he plays six more seasons, he'll be right there with Rose and Cobb.

I'm shocked it took you people this long to recognize this. He's pretty close to leading the MLB in hits

Jeter has had a remarkable career. One thing that has definitely helped his career numbers is playing every year with a great offensive team, because the batting order simply rolls over more times through the course of the season.

Consider these numbers:

- 7 times Jeter has had over 700 plate appearances in a season
- for his career he averages 4.6 plate appearances per game -- that is amazing -- even greater than Pete Rose's per game average

By contrast Stan Musial and Hank Aaron averaged around 4.2 plate appearances per game

I tried to explain that fact a couple of years ago. Good luck with that argument.

Someone should come up with a statistic to take this into account. Maybe produce a probability factor for each plate appearance by creating a ratio of hits to at bats so we could compare these all time leaders on additional criteria other than just the raw numbers.

Yeah, same arguments I heard back then. The simple raw stats are enough to make a correlation. The more at bats, the more opportunities to get a hit.

Also, he's always had talent hitting behind him allowing him to see pitches.

I don't say this to diminish his skills, but there is definitely a better chance to amass the hits he has playing for a team that allows him to see more at bats each season than if he played for Seattle.

Compare Ichiro's PA's to Jeter's, Ichiro seems to average a bit more per year so it's not like Jeter gets that big of a bump....

How long do you want to ignore this user?
The extra at bat factor is totally overblown and mostly wrong.

One of the reasons he gets extra at bats? Because he hits .313 when he's batting, allowing teammates to keep the inning going.

You compared him to Aaron and Musial? That's dumb. They were cleanup hitters. Lead off hitter is always going to get more at bats. Those guys had higher chance for RBI than Jeter. Compare Jeter to Brock, Henderson, Biggio, Willie Wilson, etc. Any difference is minimal.

Because Jeter plays for good team, he gets maybe twenty "extra plate appearances" per season??? That gives him a mere six more hits than the next guy. No big deal.

Hate the Yankees.
Respect Jeter. Especially that he can perform like this at his age.
Also respect the way that Swisher plays the game.
But I do hate the damned Yankees.

It is PA per game that is interesting. Jeter averages around 145 games a season. Ichiro is well documented for his play every game attitude. He averages around 160 games a season. That is 15 more games every season over the last 10 or so. That is quite a big difference and yet their PAs is generally pretty close.

Jeter's really good at the plate. I was excited to write him off last year, but was that obviously premature. I resent him because he stole so many gold gloves, but I can't take anything away from him at the plate. Dude is easily an all-timer.

I think 'Runs Created' is an interesting statistic. It is basically an estimation of how many runs you would expect a game if a team played 9 of that specific player.

Jeter has a career RC of 6.4.

Ichiro is at 6.1.

For comparison's sake, Pete Rose was 5.8, Willie Wilson had a 4.7, Tim Raines was 6.6, Biggio was 5.9, Rickey Henderson was 6.8.

I have no doubt Jeter has played in favorable conditions, but I think that statistic helps show he's certainly done a lot to help himself out, too.

I like Swisher, too. He's not the most talented player, but he gets the job done year after year. He's fundamentally strong, you can feel very comfortable that you're going to get 30-35 2B, 25-30 HR, 80-90 runs, and 85-90 RBI every single year.
