World Series Scheduling

So dumb. Huge gap. And now I just read this:

quote:
The Red Sox and Cardinals will play game one of the World Series on Wednesday. Unfortunately for Major League Baseball, this is one day later than it should have started and the impact on the television ratings will be huge.
If the World Series goes seven games, four of the games will compete head-to-head with an NFL game, a fifth game will go up against college football games, and game seven would compete with a major holiday in which people leave their houses at night (Halloween).
That's a formula for a ratings disaster.

On the other hand, if MLB had started the season and the World Series just one day earlier (see right), only one game would have gone head-to-head with the NFL, one game would go up against college football, and game seven would have been the day before Halloween.

they screwed everything up with playoff scheduling. Bull**** that the Pirates and Cardinals had to play day games the entire series(including in Pittsburgh with a chance to eliminate St Louis) then game 5 is at night because the other series had ended.

Hell it's bad enough for the local fans to be able to go the game, I'm sitting there watching from my computer or whatever until I get home. Fans all over can't even watch their team half the time with that bull**** scheduling.

the WS may be okay. Game 2 on Thursday is up against a dud matchup: Carolina vs. Tampa Bay

Game 4 is up against Minnesota vs. Green Bay. GB has a national following. But this is not a must-see game.

Game 5 against Seattle vs. St. Louis. Another so-so matchup. Interesting to have the Cardinals and Rams at home the same night.

The NFL games will beat the WS; however not as bad if the likes of Denver, Dallas, New England, Pittsburgh were playing in the games

Is MLB supposed to work their contracts so that they compete against themselves and put multiple games on at the same time each night?

Or are they supposed to tell TBS and Fox they can't pick ____ team to play during the day more than x times, even if the broadcasters probably believe that lowers their ratings?

I guess I am misunderstanding you. First you ***** about the schedule, then compare the teams to the pro bowl. So if you don't like the match up, why are you upset with the schedule? Would you ***** about the pro bowl schedule seeing as you don't like it and probably wouldn't watch it anyways?

Did I misunderstand this?

He's just sad to see 2 big name teams battle it out. "It's old, boring baseball." "I want to see more of the Puigs" he says.

I just don't get the anger over the schedule if he isn't planning on enjoying it anyways due to the teams playing. I mean, if the match up truly makes him unhappy, a change in scheduling won't fix it.

Ok, I guess that makes a little more sense but The Sox and Cards weren't in it last year which was the point.

When the Sox and/or Cards are in it, the series averages over a 10. The pro bowl averages a 7.

With all of the complaints about baseball being an "older" person's game, maybe MLB should consider having one of the weekend games start in the late afternoon, say 4:00. A kid could actually see the end of a game at a reasonable hour. One enduring sporting memory I have is watching WS games during the day back in the late 70s/early 80s.

I love weekday playoff games probably because it reminds me of getting home early from school and watching the Cardinals back in the day.

Where did I say anything resembling this in anyway? It's a great matchup.

My point has nothing to do what I will or won't watch. It's how stupid the MLB is in their scheduling. I want people to watch baseball and this schedule will not optimize that as Americans prefer bad football over good baseball.

Baseball is stupid to ever pit itself against football. Football will win no matter what. It doesn't matter who is playing.

Baseball will draw much much better than the game in nfl network. And Sunday night nfl will beat baseball.

Versus Monday night football would be the interesting one to me.

This is what Game 1 did with no football competition.

quote:
I'll get killed by a lot of baseball fans for writing this, but let's look at how bad this is. It will likely go down as the third-least watched Game 1 of the World Series ever, beating only last year's Tigers-Giants and 2006's Tigers-Cardinals. Also, it got beaten by what some called "the worst Monday Night Football game ever." That's right, Vikings-Giants drew a 9.5 overnight, higher than Game 1. However, in a moral victory over the NFL, the game barely drew a higher total viewership. 14.4 million viewers for World Series Game 1 compared to 13.2 million for Vikings-Giants.

That is some selective editing... Impressive.

The title of the article is:

quote:
WORLD SERIES GAME 1 OVERNIGHT RATING DISAPPOINTS THANKS TO BLOWOUT

The article also says:

quote:
The game peaked in the second inning, when Pete Kozma's unfathomable error led to a big inning from Boston. Fox's rating peaked at 11.2 during that time frame. Things dipped from there, as the Sox rolled easily to a Game 1 blowout behind the work of Jon Lester.

....

That said, an 11.2 overnight early on suggests that people would've been willing to stick around with a good game. If MLB had kept on that pace, the ratings might have been more in the range of, say, 2009's Phillies-Yankees series than last year's Tigers-Giants.

So overall, there's not a lot of room to go anywhere but up for this year's World Series. If tonight's Game 2 is competitive, ratings will rise, possibly by a very large amount. If it isn't, especially in favor of the Red Sox... things may take a turn for the worse yet again.
ORAggieFan
How long do you want to ignore this user?
A close game, but no improvement.

quote:
The 9.5 is the third-lowest overnight ever for Game 2 of the World Series, ahead of only last year and Phillies/Rays in 2008 (9.2). In addition, the 9.5 is the fifth-worst for any World Series game that did not take place on a Saturday night, ahead of only Games 1 and 2 of Tigers/Giants last year, Game 2 of Phillies/Rays in 2008, and Game 1 of this year’s series on Wednesday (9.4).

The last time the Red Sox were in the World Series (2007), Game 2 against the Rockies drew a 12.5 overnight. The last time the Red Sox faced the Cardinals (2004), Game 2 drew a 17.1 on a Sunday night.

This year’s Cardinals/Red Sox match-up is only the second World Series in history to earn a single-digit overnight for Games 1 and 2, joining last year’s Tigers/Giants series.
And now it gets NCAA, Sunday Night Football and MNF.

While I'm as disappointed as anyone that baseball in general has seen its TV ratings go down over the years, I'm not sure I've ever seen articles about numerical results written in such a biased manner.

A little good news for baseball lovers: the World Series is still up double digits on last year's (in ratings, and even more in viewership), and the ALCS-WS cohort of games is still up nearly 20%.

The rating at the end of last night's game was about 2.5 times what it was at the start. I think you'd have to call that "Getting Big Banged."

If you're going to be a media watch dog, you'll probably want to cite articles. Then again, I spent 3 or 4 hours yesterday listening to entertainment in-house counsel from, among others, Fox, so maybe my head is just still spinning.

Article #2 is more tame. Article #1, most out there in the media were pretty positive about things after Game 1. Of course, I've read Article 1 in its entirety.

Game 3 got a 7.4 rating, which was actually good. Guessing Game 4 was pretty good with a horrible NFL game going on. Tonight is a MNF game most won't be interested in. Hate Game 7 will be on Halloween.

quote:
In front of a Busch Stadium record 47,432 fans, Saturday’s 5-4 victory by the Cardinals over the Red Sox – the record-tying 13th one-run game of the 2013 Postseason – drew 12.5 million viewers on FOX, up 19 percent over Game 3 in 2012 and ranking as the most-watched World Series Game 3 since 2009 based on Nielsen Media Research data. FOX averaged a 7.4 fast national rating for the game, up 21 percent over Game 3 in 2012, and leading to a dominant win in primetime, where FOX topped the second place network by 173 percent and beat the other three broadcast networks combined based on metered market ratings.
