Love it! You can't find pop on the open mkt plus it means Elvis and Profar here for the long haul.

well Fielder wont have the pressure of competing in the playoffs now so that should help.

Yep. The Rangers are getting major pop for less than $20 mill a year at a time when pop is hard to find in FA. Even if that pop was available, the market has been dictating a commitment of 8-10 years at nearly $30/year. 7 for less than $20/yr is awesome.

MCab goes back to first; Castellano takes his over his natural position at third.

How many guys have signed deals even close to $30 mil a year? If Fielder puts the same numbers up that he did this year, he'll be way overpaid at even $20 mil/yr.

The Rangers made a play to upgrade in the short term at low risk, but there's significant risk his contract is literally "dead weight" the last 3-4 years when he's aging and packing on pounds.

Detroit was smart to get the hell away from years 7-9 of the contract but they got too little in return

He'll be 35 during the last season of this contract. He's always been fat and has a durability track record that few current players can match. I'm willing to bet on him being very productive throughout the term.

At 35, the Yankees might be ready to give him another 10 and $300 mill.

I'll hand-wash his jock during July and August homestands if he can get the Rangers a few more AL West crowns and beyond.

Depends. If they use the savings to keep Scherzer...?

His birthday is May 6, so he'll be 36. And just trotting out there everyday is nothing to brag about. Can he be productive? His production took a dive this year. You seem to ignore that his HR, BB, BA, OBP, OPS all dropped while his K rate increased. He's not trending in the right direction.

Maybe it's an aberration, or maybe it's not. We'll find out after next year if he's falling off or not.

I think there will be a bounce back. We've seen the Ball Park in Arlington help guys like him in the past.

His BA and K rate were in line with his career averages. Also, put his lefty bat in the Ballpark and see a big production boost. Power dropped a little, but I'd hardly call it a dive. If you want to talk trends, he has a multi-year streak of King less than the career average that initially got him that contract - including last season.

And will he be 35 during that last season or not?

Can we at least all agree that JD's no longer nickel and diming his way out of having enough power to be competitive?

I assumed this was a joke.

We traded a crappy player for a good player. And we got younger in the process.

Unbelievable trade for the Texas front office.

After reading some of the FB fan reaction, I think Hamilton may have been on to something about Ranger fan IQ.

If I were the Rangers, I would've traded Andrus to the Cardinals (Cards need a SS) for 1B Matt Adams, then move Profar to SS and leave Kinsler alone at 2B. Adams is a power hitter and is going to put up BIG numbers.

I would have done that IF you were getting Shelby Miller too. Elvis for Adams straight up is not close.

This. The move yesterday leaves the window to win a title with this core open far longer than a trade that would have shipped Elvis out and left Kinsler.

Rosenthal said the Rangers are still open to trading Andrus or Profar still, and there's some suggestion this helps the team sign Cano. This could become very interesting.

Actually, I think this was done to get Scherzer signed.

They were sitting at $107M for 2014 and $91M for 2015. That included:
Miggy, Fielder, Verlander, Sanchez, Torii Hunter ('14 only) and Victor Martinez ('14 only).

THEY HAD 4 PLAYERS SIGNED IN 2015 with $91M committed.

They spent $148M in 2013.

Players from 2013 that are Arb in 2014:
Scherzer ($6.7M)
Porcello ($5.1M)
Fister ($4M)
Jackson ($3.5M)
Avilla ($3M)

That's about $22M if they get no increase.

I know... with the team around him playing in the playoffs should present little if any pressure. Wash keeps it loose.

I'm hoping he is inspired and loses some weight.

I tried to tell people that about Pujols, before Anaheim signed him, and why I didn't want the Rangers near Pujols.

With Fielder, the numbers are less dramatic. Coming off the 2012 season, 2013 looks bad. For most players, 2013 would be a pretty solid. 25 HRs would have put him 3rd.

Navy - Kinsler was the player to trade, not Andrus, IMO. Kinsler just seemed to not have his head in the game. You have to wonder if Hamilton moving on, left Kinsler unhappy.

I remember getting KILLED when I said Elvis was very overrated as a player. Great fielding SS, but no power and his average is just that. With that said, I'd trade Profar because I think the dude is overblown, too. Plus his contract numbers are very attractive to teams.

BTW, LOVE this trade. The Rangers were going no where, fast.
AgGrad99

I think Elvis is a solid SS. Not a great hitting SS, but a great all around player when you factor everything else in. But, I see what you're saying. I will say this though....it's pretty cool to have options of Profar and Elvis....given other teams needs at SS/2nd when you look around the league.

I can't fathom that happening. I've seen the speculation too, but the Rangers aren't going to give him 300mm, and assuming that number comes substantially down, to the range that makes him attractive to the Rangers, the Yankees would be the winner I'd think.

You've also got to consider the length of contract he'll demand, considering he's 31.

Maybe JD will work his magic, but I cant see it happening.

It definitely has the potential to turn into a nightmare for the Rangers, but I like the trade. It allows them to properly allocate resources by getting Profar into the middle infield, and solves the power problem since both the farm and the free agent market is so devoid of power hitters. Two birds, one stone. One obese stone.

remember Fielder went through a divorce last year (off the field b.s.)

In his career he kills it at home and is moving from a pitcher's park to a hitter's park. Plus he's 29, not over the hill even for a fat boy. .400+ OBP and 30+ HR in 2014 - book it.
