Evan Grant and Ken Rosenthal both reporting it. 80 mil for 5 years. Looks like the rangers are gonna go with Soto after all.

5/$85 was what I saw... That is a crap load of money for a Catcher.

I would have really like to get him... but I don't know that I'm upset about getting him.

Also... I think the Rangers must be positive Alfaro is close. If they like Soto's approach to the game and how he handles pitchers... might it be worth having Alfaro in ST and possibly with the Rangers?

He is DH'ing in Winter ball, and doing quite well:

Certainly if you think Alfaro can play C at MLB, McCann for 5 would mean you don't have a spot for Alfaro.

I assumed the whole Fielder at 1b/DH complicated things. I had read they were looking at McCann as more of a DH type guy than catcher anyways.

If half of what I've heard about Alfaro is true then he needs to come up quick. It seems catcher is a hole the Rangers have to fill every off season.

A ****ton for a catcher, but worth it

Nice player but nicer chunk of change. Almost 30 and has caught nearly 1100 games in his career. I'm not surprised he got that much, but 5 years at $17/yr is quite a commitment for a guy with a decent amount of treadwear. A heavy dose of Soto makes me queasy though.

can't wait for McCann to get on his high horse and challenge Ortiz after he stares at a home run

If I were the rangers I seriously consider going after Dioner Navarro. Played very well for the cubs last season in a platoon role and could do similar things with Soto since he's a lefty.

5 and 85 is lofty for an aging catcher. Think the rangers did themselves a favor staying out of that.

Since you don't seem to watch baseball I will help you out on this. The two recent times McCann did this was to rookies/young players who were acting like fools and have yet to establish themselves in MLB. Ortiz doesn't act like a fool and he has also established himself in MLB quite well.

they just traded for the kool-aid man for 7/138 and you're ok for not signing a catcher?

OKAY

We needed more kool-aid drinkers.

Besides... we needed a 1B\DH with power, not a guy who hits .270\20HRs.

You can't be serious...

Fielder and McCann are not in the same world. All you have to do is check out McCann's last 5 years and ask yourself if that is where you want $17M a year going for the next 5 years. He has never hit more than 25 bombs, never driven in 100, and has a declining batting average hovering around .250.

For $2.7M more a year you get a horse who never misses a game who has a high probability of blowing up (in a good way) in Arlington. Worse case you have a solid DH as the final contract years near.

so McCann only pulls that stunt on players he thinks he can get away with strong arming?

there are plenty of established stars that showboat from time to time without getting into physical altercations with the opposing catcher while rounding the bases.

McCann's cheap stunts were just as dumb as the Hamels-Harper thing

To be fair to McCann, McCann's 162 game average is 26 home runs.

I think the thought would be he's either at catcher playing fewer games but adding the value he can add as a defender that Fielder just can't add as a first baseman/DH (and quite frankly Fielder is a huge defensive detriment), or he's playing at 1B/DH, playing more games, and his numbers probably compare more favorably to Fielders.

True, and I do think Fielder is the better player.

However, that's an incomplete comparison as the Rangers will be paying Fielder 2 years longer than the Yankees will be paying McCann. You can't ignore that, you have to factor that in.

And that would be good information if not for his 130.7 Gm/Season in his 8 full years. He will never be as young as he is now.

Besides... we have Soto.

Who would you rather have:

Teixeira ($23M)+ McCann ($17m): $40m
Fielder ($24M) + Soto ($3M): $27m

McCann had a higher fWAR in 102 games last year than Prince did in 162.

I know you are well documented as being an idiot around these parts. But, the Hamels/Harper thing is nothing like what McCann did. Harper did nothing to show up the Phillies or Hamels.

Seriously, do you even watch baseball?
