Well there goes the season.

The offense isn't performing well enough to overcome all the injuries to the pitchers.

This team will be lucky to have a .500 record.

Yep. Time for football season.

I guess I can now say "this IS your father's Texas Rangers."

Time warp back to the early 1980's Texas Rangers' futility.

I didn't want to believe in it before, but after yesterday's devestating news I think it time to accept that the Curse of Nolan Ryan is real and is taking out Rangers players one by one. There really is no better excuse for all the injuries this season. RIP 2014 Rangers!

It does appear to be a .500 team now. I don't see how they find enough pitching to compete for a playoff spot.

They can still sneak into one of the two wildcards, but a lot has to fall right:

Prince has to start raking.
Yu must continue to pitch like a #1.
Holland must come back and pitch like a legitimate #2.
Colby, Tepesch and whomever we call up has to at least be somewhat competent.

IF those things happen, we can tread water. Unlikely they all do though.

I'm less bummed about the 2014 season and more bummed about the hit the franchise as a whole took. A lot has to go right to mold two young arms into legitimate #2/#3 starters in the big leagues. To see it come to fruition, and now have the reality that neither may actually be competent pitchers in the big leagues for Texas ever again is very saddening.

Agree. If a season is flushed, it's flushed. It happens. I'm not throwing in the towel on it yet, but it's looking flushed. But these were two good arms under the team's control at a nice price for a long time. That's the real hit. Perez isn't done by any means, but I am more concerned about an injury and very extended layoff for a pitcher that was just coming into his own vs. a more established pitcher. You just hope he can relocate that path he was on a year or two from now.

We're close to the point where some future thinking team will start scheduling tommy john surgery early for all of their prospects just to get it out of the way.

Just checking in see if we lost another pitcher today?

Regarding the curse of Nolan... Harrison, Lewis, Feliz, et al... were injured prior to his departure.

I'm rarely down on my hopes, but yesterday was a real kick in the teeth for me. I've followed and touted Perez since he was 17 and pitching for Spokane. When I heard he was the 2nd youngest pitcher (at the time) to pitch in the league (2nd to King Felix) I knew he'd be something special.

I mentioned this earlier this month, that if the Rangers continued to falter, they could be sellers. If I'm JD... I add a column on the board that includes "Trade Deadline Value (What can we get for this player)." This could end up infusing the Rangers with some significant prospects.

Having said that, I'm not ready to throw in the towel. Us against the world. It is now Darvish and the RagTags. It has to be an opportunity to rise to the occasion.
Darvish - Need to resist the temptation to rely too much on him.
Ross (24) - Max 150IP? He is at 44IP in 8GS. 20 more GS? 1st season in be SP in a couple years.
Colby - Max 150 IP? Didn't pitch in 2013.
Nick Martinez (23) - Quickly has 22.2 IP (and 9 in MiLB). He pitched 151.1 IP in 2013.
Nick Tepesch (25) - Pitched 45.2 IP in MiLB already. Pitched 160+ in 2012.

Nick-and-Nick will be the deciders, IMO, more than anything else. If these guys can go 160 IP with a better than 4.0 ERA... we could remain in the hunt. Holland can come to relieve Ross.

I'm real concerned we stay in the hunt until the deadline and then decide to gamble to bring in talent and fall short again.

mhayden - Seems like I had read a report 5-6 years ago, where TJ surgeries were seen by many young pitchers as a way to have a stronger arm and thus TJ surgeries were not seen as terrible. IIRC, many pitchers had come back from TJ surgery as better pitchers than they had previously been projected. I'm not sure I bought that... and never researched it.

This has to be a problem with our strength and conditioning program.. There's no possible way to have his many injuries without something being wrong there.

I had the exact same condition, in the exact same spot, that Harrison has. I've had the surgery that he will likely have. It's not fun at all. I can't imagine him ever pitching again if he does have the fusion done.

The myth about players coming back from TJ surgery better than before is just that, a myth.

I heard that on a show where Dr. James Andrews was being featured, and he said that himself.

Sadly this may be the excuse JD needs to fire Wash.

Really?

Remind me again the exercises one does to prevent their dog from knocking them down the stairs and blowing out their knee.

As mentioned, Martin Perez is likely the 35th MLB pitcher to go for TJ surgery this season. So this isn't a Rangers thing.

The Rangers have 13 players on the DL, 6 of those on the 60.

LAAA is the next team with 8... Cincy has like 6 or 7... the rest have less than 6.

Personally, I think it has some to do with the risk Texas has been willing to take on players.

Soto - Torn miniscus... I don't know how that is conditioning.

Scheppers has always been a health concern since he was drafted.

Kousmanoff - Missed 2012 and 2013 seasons because of injury, prior to joing Texas.

Figueroa (28) - picked him off the heap list in January... now getting TJ, as well. Not sure that is the Rangers problem.

You look at Nathan, Soria, et al, that the Rangers have signed trying to come back from injury. Colby for example... I think his hip has been a physical not conditioning thing.

Hard to believe, but IIRC, the 2010 rotation didn't miss a start the entire season.
DallasAg 94
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Not entirely true...

I think you are thinking more about 2011.

A rotation of CJ Wilson (34 GS), Colby (32 GS), Holland (32 GS), Harrison (30 GS) and Ogando (29 GS) accounted for 157 GS for the season.

Remember that season the Rangers did something I think was cool... they skipped Harrison and Ogando in the rotation in late August\September. They did come into relief for a short outing which was little more than a typcial bullpen session.

Dave Bush got 3 GS
Feldman got 2 GS

But, IMO, there is something to say about the fact 4 of those guys are still on the team...

It actually probably buys him another year. Wash can mis-manage the hell out of a game, but it's not his fault the entire roster is broken.

Add Fielder to the Casualty List...Disk Herniation in Neck
mhayden
How long do you want to ignore this user?
"Fielder told the Rangers the neck stiffness went back to the 2013 season and has gotten progressively worse lately. He did not receive a physical when he was traded to the Rangers and there was no mention of neck problems in his medical reports, Daniels said. During spring training, physicals don’t typically include MRIs or cervical X-rays, unless there is a previous problem noted or unless the player has a specific issue."

How do you invest that much in a player and not get a physical?

WTF. How the F do you execute a trade like that with no physical? That is moronic on both teams part as Kinsler didn't get one either after a season with a long DL stint and no power the entire second half after he returned.

All a physical would do is ensure he doesn't have a hernia or any other obvious issue.

All indications are this wouldn't have been found out anyway. Now...whether Detroit knew something was up... that's worth looking at.

You expect general dings and scrapes... but if he has a major issue... and Detroit knew?! Several things could happen... 1) Teams will look to return the favor. 2) Teams won't trade with them. 3) A more impactful outcome from the league.

JD always goes above and beyond when a player comes up lame. He did it with the one pitcher to Chicago that he took back and replaced with another pitcher... he made the offer to Baltimore when there was concern about Chris Davis... and there was an issue with Joe Wieland (SD) that he sent.

It isn't surprising a player gets traded and has an injury... teams generally revisit those situations.

If Fielder goes down for the season... Moreland to 1st... Gallo to DH.
