Ridiculous. 13 years - $325 million, and apparently has a no-trade and opt-out clause.

Well that changes things. I was hoping the Sawks would go after him.

But that ensures that Miami is going to suck for the next decade (unless they plan to move).

$25m a year for a guy that will be hitting 40+ homeruns in his prime isn't a crazy #.

after the alex rodriguez contract debacle, i can't believe pujols, cano and stanton got 10 year deals. unreal that teams are stupid enough to do these anymore. Anything over 5 years is not worth it unless it's a HOF player in his prime, then i go 7 max, with a 5 year opt out clause for the player to test FA. Interesting to see what trout gets in 6 years when he is a FA. Maybe he is performing well after the contract ends, i dunno.

Offer Stanton 5 years at $25m and see how many more at-bats he takes as a Marlin.

Marlins have to work a little differently than other teams when it comes to contracts, because players ultimately don't *want* to be Marlins.

And it's not like the Texas days where you have to moneywhip them to get them to sign -- Stanton has seen the Marlins history and knows there's a very real chance that the majority of those years he probably won't be competing for a title and in a few of them he may actually be surrounded by a fire-sale of AAA guys.

^ All that notwithstanding, it will be very interesting to see if he comes out ahead of Trout after it's all said and done.

offer him 7/200 and I bet he takes it, opt out after 5

If he stays healthy, don't be surprised if he opts-out.....

The opt-out is one of the craziest aspects in my book. You hitch your wagon to him for 13 years while his return hitch is only 6. How lopsided.

After listening to his press conference, I would have to agree that Miami would be a fantastic place to live if you made $30,000,000.00 a year.

How much does Bryce Harper get?

That is partly why it is backloaded though.

Right. I understand the backloading helps provide him the incentive not to opt out while giving some salary flexibility in the early years, but that said, it's also a way to greatly raise your downside risk while minimizing your upside potential. If he produces, the $30MM/year 6 years from now is not going to be enough to keep him. But if he busts, what a friggin albatross of a deal to be stuck with for that period of time.
