I'd say the bad news started when Profar was shelved.

Profar is officially junk. I said two years, they should have traded him. Andrus is overrated. They are now bottom feeders in the west, and that depresses me. Large market team, that is cheap

Yu has sprained UCL and may need Tommy Johns...getting 2nd opinion.
Feliz, Perez, now Darvish...if you want a new elbow, join a Texas Rangers pitching camp near you.

Just a question, but is this surprising considering the number of innings and his delivery?

Can't wait to get in the office Monday morning and all my season ticket holders blow up my phone. This will be fun

I'd expect us to sell beltre at some point. Don't want to but it would be smart to do so.

They're also offering never-ending deals on new thoracic outlets.

I don't know if it was Nolan that called "dead arm" a "dead brain" but this REALLY sucks.

Darvish is great to watch.

Did anyone listen to the Daniels press conference?
He gave 3 options in how to handle the Darvish injury. The 2nd option was interesting to hear...specifically how it sounds as if they knew about the injury at the end of last year.

If they go the rest route and 4 months they have no improvement...well you've flushed two years down the toilet. Get the TJS done NOW! That way he's back by June 2016

4 months rest isn't even on the table.

Darvish is going to do what is best for his free agency, not Texas.

Looks like they won't be trading for C. Lee. He's hurting again.

Good thing there's 9 men on the field. It's a team sport, and it takes the entire team to win. Assuming Yu is out, the next guy will have to step up.

When the ticket office fed you that quote to give to customers, were they able to do it with a straight face?

Assuming no other moves, if Yu is out the Rangers are essentially in a position where they need all-star caliber years out of Prince and Choo to have a chance to make the playoffs.

Thankfully that's not asking for a miracle as they are both capable -- but it's about the only way this team has a shot in 2015.

You've got a #2/#3 now shifting up to be your #1.

You've got a #3 shifting up to be a #2.

You've got a #5 shifting up to be a #3.

Then you've got two unknowns at the back-end of the rotation.

That rotation will get absolutely murdered in the AL West. The offense will have to be Top 5 in baseball -- which it's capable of... but it's a necessity now.

If they are slow coming out of the gate in April, May -- yes. Rangers are sellers if they are 6+ games back heading into June.

Are you trying to infer that the Rangers are a cheap organization? Dumb could be argued, cheap is pretty much out of the question. They've been handing out bad contracts like free candy the past few years.

Roy Oswalt, Lance Berkman... to name a couple

Really? Elvis Andrus, Shin Soo Choo, and taking on Prince Fielder for starters. All big money deals, regardless of whether they were smart deals or not. The point is that the Rangers are anything but cheap.
mhayden

I wasn't questioning the contracts on if they were cheap, but more-so that they've been handing out bad ones like candy.

Fielder was a trade with a big contract going the other way and Detroit kicking in money.

We are 1 year into the Choo contract. It could turn out to be bad, but judging a contract after 1 year isn't wise.

Roy Oswalt and Lance Berkman weren't bad contracts. The two didn't pan out, but 1 year contracts are very rarely bad for that very reason - they don't really impact the ability of the club to make future deals.

Last year was a disaster and if Choo and Fielder repeat their 2014 production then yeah, those deals were bad... But saying they are bad right now is akin to saying the Darvish deal was bad because due to the injury instead of it averaging out to be $18m/year for 6 years of production it now averages out to $21.5m/year for 4 years of production. It was still a great contract, the player just got injured.

JD is taking a lot of heat, some of it deserved (though it's funny that the same sports writers who bashed him for letting Hamilton and Lee walk aren't talking about those two now), but I don't think people really appreciate that he had this rotation:

Darvish
Harrison
Holland
Perez

Locked up for multiple years at significantly under-market-rate contracts. That's an ace and 3 guys with #2 ceilings locked up for multiple years... not many teams are able to pull that off.

It just went bad in spectacular fashion.

I agree with you on the rotation and overall im still in JDs camp, im just not very optimistic on those three contracts doing 180s.

My point was simply that the Rangers spend money, wasnt tryIng to derail the thread.

I think Dave Cameron had an article that outlined what he thought were the 10 worst contracts and Prince, Choo, Harrison, and Elvis were all in there. Arod was #1.

Of those Choo is the only one IMO that was really odd from the start.

I don't believe Elvis was on it.

But any "worst contracts" that includes Harrison on it shows he didn't really do any research or was trolling for clicks.

If Harrison is broken then Rangers get somewhere around 80% of his salary back due to insurance. There's really not much of a risk there at all.

His list is basically more of a "players who have big contracts who didn't look good in their first year".

It was Jonah Keri and you're right, Elvis was only an "honorable mention" not in his top 10.
mhayden
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Elvis you can make a case for IMO.

Choo is an overpay. Can't tell if its a "worst contract" after just 1 year though.

Fielder it's impossible to tell. Depends on if he bounces back to his career averages or not. Rough estimate on per year salary, but I believe it comes out to be about $19.5m/year for 7 years.
If he's putting up 30HR/100RBI then that really isn't bad at all.

Harrison shouldn't even be on the list. Healthy it was a great deal, broken the Rangers get the majority of the $$$ back.
