Maybe JD is just a better small market GM.

Supposed to be minor, but I don't feel like anything is minor with the Rangers anymore... Holland going to miss the first of the season, may possibly be ready for first homestand.

I'm already thinking worst case for Holland. Torn rotator cuff out a minimum of 12-18 months. I mean cmon... we're talking about a guy who tore his knee up tripping over a dog named Wrigley. Would it even surprise you?

As of right now, Holland is starting in the home opener

As of two weeks ago Yu Darvish was your opening day starter and Holland was your #2. When Darvish went down, Holland was slated to slide into his role.

Now he's not ready for that and is tentatively slated for opening weekend but more specifically "when he's ready".

Normally not that big a deal, but after what has happened to 2014's #1, #2 and #4 starters, "not that big a deal" still worries the hell out of you.

Add Scheppers to the list of concerns.

So... we have:

#1: Yovanni Gallardo (RHP-29) - A guy I've never been very strong for or against. (32GS\3.51\1.29)
#2: Ross Detwiler (LHP-29) - RP last year. Not likely to get more than 150IP?
#3: Colby Lewis (RHP-35) - 29 GS \ 5.18\1.52. Suspect.
#4: Alex Gonzalez*:
#5 Nick <either Tepesch(RHP-26\39 Career GS) or Martinez(RHP-24\24 Career GS)>:

On the bubble: Anthony Ranaudo (RHP-25) - 7 Career GS in MLB.

*Requires roster move as not on 40.

Man, if Holland misses any amount of time...

As of now, we have one legit MLB SP. We've returned to the '90s (and then some).
1998:
Rick SHelling: 4.41 \ 33 GS
Aaron Sele: 4.23 \ 33 GS
Burkett: 5.68 \ 32 GS
Darren Oliver: 6.53 \ 19 GS
Esteban Loaiza: 5.90 \ 14 GS
Bobby Witt: 7.66 \ 13 GS

1999:
Helling: 4.84\35
Sele: 4.79\33
Burkett: 5.62\25
Mike Morgan: 6.24\25
Clark: 8.60\15
Loaiza: 4.56\15
Glynn: 7.24\10

2000:
Rogers: 4.55\34
SHelling: 4.48\35
Oliver: 7.42\21
Loaiza: 5.37\17
Ryan Glynn: 5.58\16
Perisho: 7.37\13
Doug Davis: 5.38\13 GS

Team ERA (2000): 5.52

If Holland starts the season on the DL, I predict this to be the worst all-time rotation for the Rangers.

Too early to cross him off?

Another article mentions Lisalverto Bonilla (RHP-24) as a potential candidate. I know nothing about him.

Interesting take:

http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/texas-rangers/headlines/20150312-grant-with-darvish-out-rangers-could-take-non-traditional-approach-with-starting-rotation.ece

In Japan they have a 6-Man rotation with 6 games/week. You basically get a designated day to pitch on.

In College, you mostly use a Fri/Sat/Sun rotation. Spot start others during the week.

Assume Holland is ok, and that Colby proves to be ok... and Yovanni makes the transition to RBiA... Thoughts on a Fri/Sat/Sun set rotation of those three? I think those are days the Rangers play almost every week. That is about 26 GS/day. That comes out to 78 GS for the season.

The downside is, it leaves 84 games to fill, instead of the 63 left if each of them pitches 33 GS.

I think what I would do based on what where things are...

I'd start the season with:
Yovanni
Detwiler
Lewis
Gonzalez
Holland <- 5th based on extra time necessary due to shoulder.

I would then have Tepesch ready to go. Once Detwiler or Gonzalez starts to struggle... I plug in Tepesch.

Tepesch has value in small amounts. He needs to get out of Arizona. His sinker won't look good in the dry air. Give him a couple starts in Round Rock. Then, you put him in Arlington on the rotation for about 2 months. Limit him to 3 times through the rotation and/or 6 IP.

Bring Nick Martinez in once the other of Detwiler and Gonzalez start to struggle.

If we are still competing by end of May... We play 21 games in April, but 30 in May... if we are still competing, it might be worth making a move.

In April\May:
7 against Oak
6 against Houston, Seattle and Anaheim\LAAA

Then trade for Hamels. :-)

Look for additional heap players to be FAs after this season.

Make money.

Too early?

Day-to-day : Detwiler (wrist) is expected to make his next spring start after x-rays came back negative, the team's web site report.

Ohlendorf
Groin Injury

I'm getting good at this crossing pitchers off. I'm really starting to be concerned we won't have anyone to pitch in Round Rock, either.

Cmon, Ohlendorf is horrible. That's like complaining that you ripped a hole in a shirt with 10 holes already in it

Anybody know what happened with Martin Perez? I know he had surgery last year but is he not expected to play at all this year? I haven't even seen him mentioned at all from the small portion of this thread that I've read

Had Tommy John surgery which typically shelves you for a year + rehab.

Not realistic to think he'll be back before the All-Star Break, and honestly not all that realistic to think he'll contribute meaningful innings at all in 2015.

That's why last year was so bad and so far this year with Yu's TJS... You aren't just impact the current season, but the next one as well. It's devastating.

Who's the better option? Choo? I'd prefer Choo in the 2 or 3 hole.

This is very true. The pitcher isn't truly back to his old self until the second season after TJS. I'd probably expect Perez to have a season with 15-17 starts and a 4.75 ERA. Yu might be good for 20-25 starts in 2016 and probably a 4.25 to 4.75 ERA.

Perez had TJ Surgery last year and was not expected to be back until the ASB.

I think it was the DMN reported last week he was throwing from a half-mound.

He won't likely contribute anything meaningful until 2016.

He's started throwing off a full-sized mound this week. He's on track for a mid-season return. I just don't think the Rangers expect him to be the sharp Perez they saw last April immediately after he returns. But if he finds it for September. ... nice addition if the Rangers are in the hunt.

Yet, he is in the mix for one of the 5 holes in the shirt known as the Texas Rangers 2015 Rotation.

I would actually say there are 5 holes that exist and while we only have 5 buttons at a time... replacing buttons will be routine in Arlington.

http://www.star-telegram.com/sports/mlb/texas-rangers/article14532413.html

Even worse to consider our AAA staff going to Round Rock.

Looks like Luke Jackson and Jerad Eikoff are decided. We'll decide who we can piece together for potential callups.

My guess is, we will likely get 2-3 pitchers late from ST who get released from other teams... maybe Rule Vs as rosters get parsed to 25/40. We will likely get a couple serviceable AAAA /#6 SPs whom we can guarantee will get a call-up.
