Yeah, wouldn't really classify this as a "flier" of a pick for either franchise yet, but at this point, you are going to start to get into people with AT LEAST one red flag.

I like the Matuella pick more than the Ferrell pick though. Matuella has some great stuff, has already undergone TJ with what appears to be a successful recovery, and hasn't faced an RC or Augie type of inning load on his arm. The back injury I don't know much about, but if they looked over the medicals and feel comfortable, I feel like that's a great pick.

Ferrell just needs to get a mental edge back. He imploded the entire postseason when he was needed the most by his team.

Was he the guy they were talking about last night that had the thoracic fusion or whatever done?!

I think that was the same thing Matt Harrison had done. There have been a number of pitchers to get that done. Not something to go out and do just for funz, but not a tremendous concern if all is well.

Nix ended up going to the Padres in the 3rd.

I still don't necessarily blame him for the entire fiasco, as the Astros made some mistakes as well during their negotiations. Aiken and his camp are to blame for the entire fiasco. Houston was definitely vindicated by the TJ surgery and subsequent questionable recovery.

Astros made the maximum offer they could to Nix without forfeiting future first round picks. Couldn't expect them to do any more. I guess he is still bitter because he didn't let the Astros draft him again, and I can't really blame him, but I wish we could have had him. But the "verbal deal is a deal" stuff is just not how the business world works, hopefully Nix has figured that out now.

Astros offered him 680 last year anyway. The Aiken family was close with his family at the end of the process and were in his ear about how the Astros were the devil in the situation. Turns out Aiken's injury actually was that serious. No hard feelings towards Nix, but I hope Aiken fizzles in the minors.

I'm sure... They both ended up at IMG. I'm a Rangers fan, didn't follow this too closely, but I'm sure they became close.

From the outside, it would appear the Aikens were trying to be a little greedy, based on information that arose about his health.

From what I read, Nix apparently thought he still had a spot at UCLA, so he either just got screwed all the way around, or was surrounded by people who influenced him down the wrong path. I'd have damn sure have know if I still had a spot at UCLA, before turning down $600K with no place to go.

I'm sure the Aikens assured the Nix family it would all work out.

Cleveland slots $2.4M for Aiken. I'm not sure there are many fans that look favorably on a kid like that. Cleveland doesn't have to sign him immediately. I'm sure they'll revisit his medical. If he doesn't sign until late, that wouldn't surprise me.

Im curious why Astros fans feel that Aiken undergoing TJ vindicates them for not signing him? So he misses a yr + of low a high a... Does Darvish misssing the yr for TJ mean Rangers shouldnt have signed him?? I pretty much feel TJ surgery is the price of doing business for any pitcher drafted these days.

Because there was a problem. Hence the reason for a discounted bonus. One year or not a major injury is a valid reason for a discount.

Critics thought the Astros were balking and just trying to take the kid for a ride.

This. Plus, by all accounts within the organization if I remember correctly, this was a special type of injury too that will shorten the overall length of his career. Also, nice try to compare a HS pitcher already needing TJ at the outset of his career to a proven Cy Young quality pitcher.

As an aside, Blake Allemand went in the 5th round to the Brewers. Good for him! He had a fantastic career for the Aggies.

I'm a Rangers fan, and I see it.

The Astros offered what they felt was a fair risk\reward offer.

Houston was valid in their concern for his injury.

If the Rangers said, "We have a very high expectation of TJ surgery and we'll lose him for a year," or if they say, "His injury increases the likelihood he may never pitch at a MLB," then you should adjust what you are willing to spend. If you know a guy will only pitch 5 years on a 7 year contract... and you can pay him only for the 5 instead of the 7... you absolutely have to look at that.

Houston was valid in offering him less because of his medical. They lose Aiken in 2014, but get compensation in 2015.

Aiken lost 1 year for the injury. He loses a 2nd year for recovery. That is 2 years of player control that you lose for a player who has never thrown a pitch beyond high school.

You have Rule V and years of Serf\Arb that get affected.

Aiken was 17 at the time of being drafted, which means he has 5 years of Rule V. Drafted in June 2014, he'd be eligible for the Rule V in December 2018. Meaning, he'd have to be on Houston's 40Man or could be taken by any other team.

It was determined he needed TJ and got it in March 2015? He doesn't really start to look at pitching until March 2016. That gives Houston 2yr & 9 months of availability in their minors before they get him on their 40.

True. How soon can he get here?

And I think they'll be grooming this guy to take over our closer's role. We haven't had a real closer since Valverde (haven't really needed one since then).
