Planning a trip to see my SIL in NYC and looking at catching a game.

Any areas of the park that are particularly better than the others? Places to avoid?

I did the stadium tour during the day the last time I was there. Got to see monument park, press boxes, and Yankee museum. The stadium sits directly in the heart of the hood. So my advice is to go to the stadium for the game or facility tour, then get outta there as fast as possible.

The neighborhood near Yankee Stadium is fine, but there's no real reason to be in it. You'll get off the subway right next to the stadium and if you want to try one of the dive bars, they're right there, too. Otherwise just get on and off the Yankee Stadium subway and do what you want at the stadium and then go back to somewhere with more things to do.

Yeah I'm not worried about the neighborhood or anything like that. I'm more concernd with where to sit in the stadium

For example, at MMP I'd say don't sit in RF because you can't see the video and scoreboards. I'd recommend the Crawford Boxes for the experience or the 1B side for the view.

Stuff like from someone who's familiar with the stadium.

Thanks for the heads up on the tour. I'm gonna look into that.

Don't stop at the red lights in the Bronx at night. Make sure you get on the south bound train after game.

But really, it's a nice stadium with the corporate atmosphere everyone talks about. Don't be an idiot like me and get seats in SR200 or whatever. I was an idiot and it never occurred to me that SR meant standing room. I thought I was getting a good deal on second level seats. We ended up going to the top of the nosebleeds in left field.

If you have time, go to a Mets game. Very nice stadium.

Also, if you have rooting interests elsewhere, go to Foley's near the Empire State Building. Tell them who you root for and they'll put their game on a tv somewhere for you. Lots of sports (mostly baseball) memorabilia.

mets stadium is nicer, better food/beer options, better sight lines, easier/cheaper tix. that said, you've probably gotta hit yankee stadium if you're only going to 1 game...

like someone else said, there are a couple of decent bars around yankee stadium if you want a beer before the game, but everyone gets out and pours into the subway. nobody wants to hang out in the bronx at 10pm when you're a 30 min subway ride from manhattan/brooklyn/etc

where to sit/not sit -
the NY wind really rips through the upper deck, esp down the LF foul line. seats are OK but bring a jacket.

i would avoid the centerfield bleachers.
if you are behind home or on the LF/3b side of the stadium you can see the subway trains running/stopping behind CF/RF, which is neat.

walk the concourse, lots of cool stuff to see esp if it is a boring game or you get there early.

Now that's what's looking for! Thanks

And right now if it all works out we'll be catching the hometown Astros on Opening Day. So that's why it's Yankee Stadium.

Stros, nice!
No matter the forecast be prepared for it to be randomly 35 degrees colder with 20 mile gusts at a moments notice.

It's a cool place to catch a game, I've only sat in the upper deck (about all I could afford) but have enjoyed it. Definitely check out monument park. Opening day will definitely be a different experience from the normal Corp feel it has. Considering going to the city for that one too.

If you ever get to go back citi is definitely the better stadium. While I enjoy the comfort of new Yankee, it definitely doesn't have the feel of the old one.

Sit in the right field bleachers for some added entertainment! I remember going to the old Yankee Stadium and sitting in the RF bleachers. Be prepared for some profanity and very crude behavior if you sit with the Bleacher Creatures.
