Good luck to everyone this year. I finally got back into coaching out here in Colorado - large high school JV team. We've had some voluntary winter workouts so far and we have some good kids. My biggest pet peeve to this point is the lack of conditioning from these guys!

Glad to see this thread back. I got one of my boys when he was 15, so he never played. Another one is disabled, so he played modified ball for a season. My third son played last year for the first time...kid pitch, thrown straight to the wolves. I was so proud of him, 9 years old. The first pitch he ever saw in a game hit him in the hand (swinging), from the fastest pitcher in the league. He stayed in the game, struck out, took first base on a dropped 3rd strike, and eventually scored. He hit 2 balls all year. I was so proud of him.

Every male in my family for 5 generations has played baseball, and he got to do it too. I'm glad we did it. I didn't know that my wife would get cancer, and that Harvey would flood us out of our home last fall, or that one of my kids would run away. I don't think we'll be able to sign up this spring. Anyway, this thread helped get me to sign him up last year, and he loved it.

Thread resurrection time.

My son who is now 16 and at the end of his junior year will FINALLY play his first baseball game of 2018 tomorrow night. He tore his ACL in the 10th football game of last fall and has been rehabbing ever since. We were able to get his appointment with the orthopedic surgeon moved up to see if he could be cleared a little bit early, and he was cleared.

His HS team got second in district and then won bidistrict last week. This week they face the #4 team in the state and my son was practically begging to get to play. The school stood firm and would not release him until they had a medical release from the doctor. When we got the letter yesterday, my son was thrilled.

So his HS season may be 2-3 games total (if we lose the series), but I'm just glad as heck to see him back on the field. I hope he has success but my expectations are low. He hasn't seen live game pitching since July 2017 so he's likely rusty.

Post-summer season update:

So my son's HS season of his junior year was a total of 2 games. Our team lost the playoff series against the #4 ranked team in two games, and the #4 team eventually got knocked out a few rounds later by the eventual state champs. Not a bad way to go out, and he was ready to crank up summer travel ball.

He chose to play with a local team where a few of his HS teammates played so he could at least have some time playing with them since he missed his whole spring. He played mostly 3B, a little bit of C and pitched some as well. Overall, he had a great summer, especially hitting the ball. Finished the summer with a .481/.536/.691 slash line and led the team in nearly every statistical hitting category.

He had a lot of fun, and we enjoyed watching him. He's really fixated on playing college ball somewhere, and he's received a little bit of attention, but not enough for me to say he's "getting recruited". He's been invited to many on-campus camps, and we've tried to vet out which of these invites are solely to fill a camp spot versus which ones might actually be interested in him as a player. So we're going to take him to 4-5 camps in the fall who've expressed a little interest in him - a couple of D2's, a couple of D3's and a JUCO. I'm not sure if anything will come out of all of this, but he's hoping so.

Enjoyed reading your posts Cinch. Sounds like your and my son around same age. I also spent alot time with him in the yard when he was younger. How I miss playing catch with my son. Since about 3 years ago my hand eye coordination could not catch up with his throws. It has been an absolute miracle watching my son grow up, and much of our time has been on baseball fields in the Summer. He made the choice 7 years ago that he wanted to play select ball. Since then our summers have been filled with journeys to various fields mostly in state, but also through some of the South and Midwest. Unless you experience this lifestyle, people don't understand. It is a lifestyle. Being our only, I have been there to watch him pitch EVERY SINGLE GAME. Now as he enters his senior year of high school, I cherish even more the opportunity to watch him play high school ball. Where has this time gone? It was a blip. He recently committed to play College Ball in another state (North Carolina). So our days of watching him live will be coming to an end soon. This last year will certainly be bittersweet for sure.

January 25, 2019 was the start of my son's senior baseball season. For any younger parents out there, one day you'll be sitting here like me wondering how in the heck the time went by so quickly.

We were blessed to get through football season this year with no injury! Thank you, Lord. There were a lot of prayers before and during every game, and he made it through. He made first team All District and Elite Academic All State, so it was a very successful senior season for him.

We made it to a few fall baseball weekends, but the weather was pretty terrible all fall to get many games in. Lots of rain. He was able to make it to some camps at some smaller colleges, but nothing ever really came from that.

He attended a multi-college camp/showcase in the Dallas area in January and was invited to visit a small school in Louisiana. So, he can officially say that he is being recruited for college baseball, and he was told he has a spot on the team. It's a D3, so no athletic scholarship involved, and we are currently working on admissions and academic scholarships to see if he can afford to go there.

He's been accepted to A&M and been accepted into the Engineering Program. Right now, A&M is his backup plan, and I've told him several times that his "backup plan" is many kids' dream plan so he needs to be grateful for what he's been blessed with.

He's not 100% decided whether he wants to go to the small school and play ball, or go to A&M. My wife and I support him either way, and want him to make his own decision. We could try to sway him one way or the other, but if he didn't agree with our direction, he wouldn't make the most of it, and he could grow to resent us pushing him that way.

I hope he can relax and make the most out of his senior season. We could be pretty good and make it a few rounds deep in the playoffs if everyone stays healthy.

Here's to the start of HS baseball season!!!! Whoop!

(BTW, Psychag, my son and your son have played ball together a few times back when they were about 13U. Congratulations to you and your son and we're pulling for y'all in the HS season!)

Great bump!

My son is also beginning his senior season. While he may have experienced some of the ups and downs of playing time, etc that some of you spoke about on this thread I can honestly say that we have been truly blessed to be a part of a fantastic high school program. I would put my son's high school coaches up against any select program in the state (even though he has also been very fortunate with his summer teams as well).

As a somewhat undersized pitcher, we weren't sure that playing at the next level was going to be in the cards and I quite frankly wasn't sure he really wanted to. However, he had the fortune/misfortune to be on the bump when the winning run was scored against them to knock them out of the regional playoffs last spring in a 1-0 ballgame. He walked into the kitchen the next morning and announced that he wasn't ready for baseball to be over after his senior year. SO, the process began and long story longer, he signed his letter of intent to play college baseball for a Texas JUCO this fall.

Now they begin the season as a favorite to win their district and ranked as high as #3 in Texas 5A in some polls.

As a parent, I've already lined up the vacation days and don't plan on missing an inning. If this year goes as fast as the last three, it will be over before we know it!!!

One last note, for those of you who get the privilege of coaching at the t-ball, coach pitch, kid pitch, select level; just know, it is almost as much fun watching the maturation, growth and development of the kids you coached as it is your own son. Slow down and enjoy it because it goes way too fast!

Great post 96ags and best of luck to your son and his team this Spring.

It has been fun following kids that my son played with growing up and seeing them develop and pursue their dreams. Several boys are headed to TCU, Baylor, Rice, JUCOs, etc. He played with some true studs and some of them you would've never guessed it at 8, 9 or even 12 years old.

I don't have a son playing baseball but I do have a daughter that is about to begin her last 8U softball year. We've been playing on a team the past few years (I have helped as an assistant) that is moving up to 10U this spring but we have decided she needs to stay behind and play with girls her age.

I haven't read the entire thread so I don't know if girls softball is fair game here but interested in Cinch's post earlier about trying not to push the kid. We ask constantly if she really wants to play. I've been athletic most of my life and my kids have watched me compete in rec league sports and they have gone to the golf course with me and my buddies when the wife was busy or needed a break so I don't want my kids doing something just because they think I want them to. She enjoys softball so I know she is doing it for herself now but I will continue to support her whether she continues through high school or stops playing in the next few years.

Good luck to all your sons and daughters this season!

I really enjoy reading the anecdotes and updates from everyone on this thread, no matter the age or gender of the athlete.

My son is a Junior, going on his second year of varsity baseball. He was called up to varsity last season a few games into district play. He only pitched, but pitched very well and ended up being the workhorse down the stretch. He is really hoping to be more than a PO this season, which his coach has indicated he would play in the field, so we'll see. He played SS and batted 3rd on JV before being called up to varsity, but pitching is really his thing.

As far as baseball after high school, that still remains to be seen. His coaches (hs & tourney) think he can pitch in college, but we haven't had much conversation or interest as of yet. We'll see what the next year and a half brings. He has decent size at 6'1''155lbs. and throws in the mid 80s. He touched upper 80s in velo training this fall, but has yet to do that off the mound. His gift is movement, he never gets barreled up.His achilles is walks/pitch counts.

I've only missed one game since he's been in high school and my plan is to miss zero his last two seasons. His team should be very good this year and are expected to go deep into the playoffs. Next season will be rough as we are losing a very talented senior class and replacing it with a weak sophomore class.

Anyway, good luck to all of the athletes this season!

glad someone bumped this. Son starts his junior year at a D3. So far their practices can be described using one word - "frozen". I think in two weeks they have only had three field practices due to the weather. Luckily he's a pitcher, so he can throw his bullpens indoors.

I've got my flights booked for the season and if the weather cooperates I will get to see 18 of their games live and of course watch the others streaming.

It's been a lot of fun for me and him. He is one of only 6 juniors remaining from an initial class of 16. He's made what I think will be lifelong friends, and already has a network of guys who have graduated.

It's hard work, for instance this morning he had to make the walk across campus to the athletic facility at 6:00am to workout...it was 15 degrees. His fraternity throws a party every Wednesday night, but he told me he will pretty much skip them this Spring due to his morning workout schedule.

Look forward to everyone's updates during the season.

Quote:

Just read this - you described my son to a T. He doesn't throw a pitch that is straight. Doesn't have overpowering stuff (low 80's), but he rarely has a ball barrelled up. His biggest issue is hitting batters. Throws 3/4 to sidearm. so his ball starts at the RH batter and runs away low off the outside corner. Sometimes it doesn't break!

MAROON, how has your son enjoyed the D3 baseball experience? Did he consider A&M, without baseball, and if so, does he (or you) ever regret him not going to A&M? Do you think that the education and experience that he's received as a D3 athlete prepares him for the working world?

I would love to get your perspective as a father since we may be facing the decision pretty soon. The application to the D3 has been sent in, and we are just waiting on the academic scholarship decisions at this point.

CinchAG97,

He has loved D3 baseball. His road to D3 was a little different, as he choose his school first; then decided he wanted to play baseball later. He came down to his final two schools - A&M or the D3. He just could never get comfortable with the size of A&M or the class sizes. He is a product of private school with small classes and he is a sort of a collaborative learner. He wants to have lots of dialogue with this professors. He didn't think he was going to get that at A&M. The school he attends is highly academic, but it's very small - 1900 students. I think the education he is getting is very very good. The school has a very strong alumni base and he has already worked it for a possible internship this summer in a field he's interested in. It's not for everyone, but it is perfect for him. He's also a kid who does not really watch sports on tv, so the lure of a big state school, SEC environment was not something he was looking for. He loves to play sports, just not watch.

Playing sports in college has helped preparedhim for the working world - time management is a huge deal for all athletes. I've had a couple of friends in upper levels of HR tell me athletes are kids they all go after because of that trait.

D3 sports is not D1 - the money is tight at many of the schools, and his school does not support athletics as well as many of our conference rivals. They pay lip service, but the funds aren't there. That to me has been the one disappointing aspect. For instance we still have parents bring food between games for double headers at home and on the road - just like high school. The parents just raised $100k this fall to make improvements for the program - new field tarps, training equipment, pay for a part-time assistant, etc, etc. While I don't think D3 has quite the hours required of D1, its not that far off - during the season he is for sure on the field or in the gym 3 hours a day minimum (game days are basically baseball from sunrise to sunset - they play a lot of DH's)). Monday is the only off day.

I don't have any regrets about him not attending A&M. Neither of my kids attended A&M, and it hasn't tempered my love for A&M or my following of A&M sports one bit.

I'll try and share this video to remind us all that the lessons they learn as young men are infinitely more important the the strikeouts or base hits. Enjoy the ride!

By the way, that is former Aggie 3rd baseman George Janca scoring at the 1:27 mark.

This is an interesting thread to find - thanks for bumping!

I am on the very young end of this spectrum.. my son is 13u, but has already received some high level attention. We are playing on a team that is planning to play a couple national events this year (Perfect Game WS).

I figured out a long time ago that he is way above my coaching ability. We live in rural east texas, so it is has been difficult finding high level coaches out here. I believe this new team has the best coaching staff in the region, so we are excited to see what this year will bring to him.

Anyway, I am curious to follow some of your boys as they go through this. Mine's goal is to play D1 college ball, and he has the potential to make it there. I know I know - Dad's sometimes can't see clearly when it comes to their own - but we have tried hard not get ahead of ourselves. It is clear that if he stays healthy and continues to progress, he is going places with this game.

All of this is completely new to us, but we are trying to learn as much as we can about the process so that we are ready for whatever comes his way. Any advice or experience to share would be greatly appreciated.

CinchAG,

We wrestled with some of those decisions last summer. My oldest got into A&M but had a couple of D3 offers, a D2 offer and a D1 Juco offer. Despite being a baseball dad, loving the game and coaching him into 8th grade I tried not to influence his decision (if it was me I would have kept playing). I stressed that he had to decide for himself. His mom, a longhorn, really wanted him to go to A&M, some what ironic, but she recognizes A&M is a good school. At the end of the day his decision came down to A&M or the Juco (which made it to Grand Junction last year).

He is at A&M and doing well in school. Over Christmas break I asked him if he ever thought what things would be like it he went to play baseball at the Juco. He said not until just now. So I guess he made the right decision for him.... However, me being the dad who loved to watch him play, I am still working through things. Lol. But if I suggested he continue to play and if it did not workout, well that would have been the worst case scenario.

I coached my sons t-ball team last year and I cannot begin to tell you how much fun I had. In my part of Texas baseball is sport #1 and we had 18 TEAMS in Tball. To see just how much fun those boys had on the field and in the dugout gave me a smile every time. We were pretty good too. We won one of the post season tournaments and got knocked out in regionals. My son cried and cried when it ended.

We joined a select team and played 12 games in the fall ball league. Our team is all First graders so they got knocked around pretty good. But they won 3 games and were pretty impressive at the end of the season considering their age. We are in a smaller town so the 'select' team is full of kids he goes to school with or they go to the other elementary schools. All of the parents know each other too.

Its kind of weird to me to call it select ball when they are 7.

This season we decided to play both in the local city league again and the select team is going to play five weekend tournaments. The select team is going to be real young and probably have a lot of problems against the older boys, but next year..... The older select team, I think they are U10, are really good and win a lot of games all over the state. Our boys will have some pretty big shoes to fill considering a lot of them have older brothers on the U10 team.

I am coaching his city ball team again this year and we will have at least four and hopefully five kids from his select team. I cannot freaking wait for baseball to start. I hope he doesnt get tired of it. I asked him over and over if he wanted that much baseball and he said yes with a smile every time.

I read these posts from people with kids in high school and it seems like a long way away, but I know its not.

Oh yea, and he is also playing soccer. So does his older sister. So much for my golf game.

I'm jealous. Cherish those t-all and youth ball days. They come around one time in life and they are sweet. Still love thinking about those years - especially memories of the kid who was the weaker player who made the big play. Those are so fun.

Son update. Through five games we're 4-1. He's seen two innings on the hill in relief and has a 0.00 ERA. Can't argue with that.

"So much for my golf game."

So much for your social life, bank account, sleep....

It's worth it. Never worth it from the financial side of things, but from the memories that you'll make and the fun he will have, it's worth it.

Son's team played and won their opening game Thursday night. He did great behind the plate and will make a huge difference for this team this year. He didn't hit well but he said he feels like he was pressing and trying too hard wanting to "hit it out" every swing. If he'll just relax a bit, it'll all come. He hit very well in our two scrimmages, but I guess first true game jitters got to him a bit.

So a cool thing happened earlier this week - my son hit his first HR of his high school career and it came at a good time.
Down by 2, top of 7th, 2 outs and 1 on. First pitch fastball and he hit it out. Team and fans go crazy and we go on to win 7-6 in the 8th. It was a great moment

Senior year has started out fantastic for my son. He's up to 5 HRs on the year so far and leading the team in average and RBIs. He's having a ball and was named our classification's state Hitter of the Week last week by a HS Baseball website.

Behind the plate he has thrown out 5 baserunners so far and usually, the other team just quits trying to run after their first runner is thrown out at 2nd.

His pitching has been just OK but it's getting better. He threw 3 shutout innings today.

He still hasn't decided what to do about college, and we have a new visit set up for next week. It's another D3 school, and seems to be a great fit. I'm hoping they'll offer him a chance to play baseball, and if so, I can see him making this new school his choice.

Tonight concluded the regular season for my son's HS team, and it's been a very fun season! The team is 22-1 and co-district champs with a one game "seeding" game to come on Monday night. Our only loss is the the co-champs 5-4.

My son is leading the team in hitting at .514 with 37 RBIs. He hasn't hit any more HRs, but 5 is a darn good season for HS.

A few weeks ago he decided to commit to a Texas D3 school, which will be a great fit for him academically.

Overall, it's been a great ride so far for his senior season. Playoffs will start next weekend, and here's hoping for several more weekends of HS baseball!

My son gets at least one more weekend of HS ball. We won bi-district in two games, and we play a neighboring district winner next round. Our next opponent seems solid on paper, and it should be a good test.

My son went 5-7 with a HR, 1 HBP, so it was a good bi-district weekend for him. Let's hope they play well next weekend and extend the season once again.
