Right. It's real easy to be Mr Family and Good Teammate and speak up on his behalf. But I'm absolutely willing to bet you that some quiet complaints got floated up the chain that helped lead to this. And we won't hear from those folks. There's family friendly and then there's 100% all-of-the-time, and this has been explained as the latter.

I read they "homeschool" him only when Spring Training starts. And the article made it sound as if school is not a priority at all, comes after baseball and video games.....

Not saying there were not players who aren't OK with him in the lockerroom all the time*** but why is that "obvious"?

***Players who have problems with kids in the clubhouse at all are in for a lot of grief over their career.

Again, I think the key point here is moderation. Your reaction is exactly why all of these guys would keep quiet. Just because a guy may not want kids in there 100% of the time doesn't mean he's the one with a problem. If they publicly speak up, they are setting themselves up to be the boogeyman even if their position is reasonable.

The bit about how the goal is to pass the standardized tests has me wondering about his parenting techniques.

I don't doubt the guys would think about being silent. That's not what I'm saying. Nor do I think guys who don't want him there all the time (or even at all) are anti-family.

It's probably best for the kid to have some time away from the clubhouse; but I could see this being under pressure management stepping in and trying to make changes...(or a really dang clever way to get LaRoche to leave via retirement or approval of a trade )

I don't know. Bizarre situation.

As with many things in life, moderation is the key. This kid was there 100% of the time. That is nuts. I have a hard time putting this on the White Sox management for trying to be flexible and accommodating, then ultimately coming to the realization that it's gone too far and asking that it be dialed back (not eliminated)

ultimately all of this just shows how out of touch professional athletes are with the common man. Leaving $13 million dollars on the table because you can't be away from your kid for 7 or 8 hours per day? Good grief

Or he had his priorities in order and chose his family over money

The more I hear about this the more I think LaRoche is cray cray

if he had his priorities in order...he would have retired 3 years ago to spend more time with his family.

he had already made $45 million in his career thru 2013. How much more money did he need at that point?

Sounds like he got to spend a lot of time with his family while making a lot of money. That is, until this debacle.

It seems as if the ball clubs are all having to deal with clubhouse issues. Old school culture butting up against, Hispanic culture, and now this. Players have turned down team overtures due to there clubhouse cultures.

It was already well known LaRoche has plenty of interests outside of baseball he hunts and fishes, owns a ranch and stars in a reality TV show but a 10-day trip to Southeast Asia in November with his good friend, Milwaukee Brewers reliever Blaine Boyer, where they went undercover in brothels to identify and rescue underage sex slaves, altered LaRoche's perspective even more:
quote:
When it came time to board a flight back home, LaRoche hesitated. "I was sick," he says. "I was thinking about my kids and then thinking about the hundreds of thousands of parents who are searching for their 12-year-old daughters."
quote:
As they waited for their plane, LaRoche asked Boyer, "What are we doing? We're going back to play a game for the next eight months?"

WOW!

I have been to India 3 times on Mission Trips. I have seen these children. I work with a group that rescues them. I have 2 that I financially adopted. The younger has a scar all the way down her left cheek. This scar was given to her by her dad when she was infant so that he could sell her to slavery, more specifically...child-prostitution. The scar is a symbol to defile her face so that no man would want to marry her. Watch Slumdog Millionaire and you will see this mark happen in the movie. Anyhow, she and her sister are amazing. The orphanage I visit has 700 kids that are rescues from situations like this. Every time I read a story, see a billboard, or part of a discussion about child-prostitution, I get emotional. This is a huge problem that needs to be erased.

I support Adam for his decision. He will get a job somewhere and be just fine. Making millions of dollars vs. making $100k per year is no biggie when it comes to having to sacrifice family. I would not quit my job if my employer told me that I could no longer have my children come to the office for about an hour every-other-day, but the point is that this was important to Adam and he is sticking to his decision. I praise him for that!

Did he need to keep working 7 years ago when he had made 16 million?

That's a bull**** no-win situation you're trying to put him in here.

And you're missing something important. The last 3 years he was able to make a lot of money and spend a lot of time with his family.

He's quitting now that he can't make money and spend time with his family--that sounds like a family man, to me.

This statement seems like it needs some air quotes - like around undercover, rescue, and thai sex workers.
