One of our boys had a baseball game today. The other team was doing cheers, etc. Our coach was like, "What is this softball?"

The ump went over and asked the kids in the dugout to quit their cheer.

Some chatter is good. Cheers? No.

You mean chatter like Ben Chapman gave to Jackie Robinson (if you saw the film 42), or little league stuff like "Heybattabattabatta"?

I was part of the generation that chattered hey batter batter and it was part of the game and since everyone else did it no one got their panties in a wad.

As an umpire I tell teams no talking to or making reference to certain positions or numbers but other than that I enjoy the chatter

I remember being a couple of years removed from high school ball and watched a Brenham HS game. They were always the gold standard of baseball and did softball type cheers the whole game. They didn't do that when I played them in HS and was very surprised a Brenham team would act like this.

Baseball players are the cockiest athletes most of the time. Good luck getting rid of trash talk. It becomes fun if you just embrace it. Barash's outburst last night was awesome. Ivey throwing the horns down at tu was awesome. Come on man.

I guess chatter means something different than when I played. We were coached that you never shut up, on the field or on the bench. Coach would yank a fielder if he didn't "talk it up."

Don't mind it in little league. I'd rather have my team doing "hey batta batta" than picking daisies.

I guess the baseball fields are silent now? Seriously, I didn't know that. We always encouraged our pitcher to fire strikes, moved on every pitch, "get the leading lady," "ducks on the pond," etc...all that cheesy stuff. It's a sport where you stand around 90% of the time, so it keeps guys engaged. Maybe since the kids play year round these days, it's more like the pros - I can understand not running your mouth for 162 games in center field in the big leagues. We'd yell that our runner was going when he wasn't, tell the other team's runner to get back when the pitch went to the plate. All good fun...

I didn't say the fields were silent. I have no idea. You said your coach would pull you for not talking it up. Maybe that was a gross exaggeration. I don't know. All I know, is that 'talk' doesn't matter at any level. As a youth, coaches should only care about developing the players and making the game fun. If kids like talking it up, great. If one doesn't, who cares. If a coach actually 'cares' about the talk, that's a problem and he's a terrible coach.

I remember doing it as a youth. I don't remember hearing it. So I guess I'm saying either my team was full of annoying jerks, or it wasn't that disruptive to batters.
