That was just Joe West putting his sack on display. He wanted to make sure everyone knew he could disallow a HR because he wanted to.

I don't know whether replay empowers a guy like that or not. I think he's egotistical enough to make the call anyway, with or without replay to cover him.

I think Joe West and Angel Hernandez are the only two things that can unite all baseball fans. I am at a loss how these guys continue to work as umps in MLB, much less the playoffs.

The ball hit the fan's hands. Another fan made contact w/ the glove. It was going to be a dead ball regardless. Personally, I think that, at the very least, the play should be ruled a ground rule double. I understand the call, even though I think West is the worst. But you can't just assume a catch there. This isn't like the Mauer kid in the Bal/NYY series where the player was camped under the ball waiting for it. I think in a situation where you can't assume the catch, you should go w/ a ground rule double.

I don't think the fan who hit the glove really did anything wrong. He wasn't reaching out. His hands were in his chest. A ball just happened to be heading directly at him. The guy in the orange shirt and the guy in the white shirt were reaching. The fan in the white shirt is irrelevant, other than to give some perspective on placement. The fan in the orange reached, but I don't think you can really criticize a guy for such a normal, in the heat-of-the-moment, reaction.

I'm giving Junkhead a hard time, as he's a friend off the boards.

If the post I originally quoted was a reference to the way the Astros and Rangers threads go in general, sure. It can be a trainwreck. But if we're talking about how a fanbase reacts to a controversial call, which is what I thought it was a reference to, then I don't think any team is immune to over-the-top reactions.

Game threads in general are pretty awful. It's a constant battle between people who know what they're talking about and people who don't, people who are generally passive and people who are hot-headed, and people who want serious discussion versus people who only want to troll or play devils advocate. Terrible combination regardless of team or sport.

Go Red Sox! I'm a huge fan since my family vacation in Boston in 2007. Got home from vacation and the Sox won the World Series.

I wasn't real excited about the matchup because good pitching beats good hitting most of the time. But the Red Sox have really roughed up the Astros relievers the last 3 games. As long as Sale makes it back, this series is over.

Maybe if Chris is healthy, but his velo was down and his control was poor in his first start. Add in whatever stomach complications he's having I wouldn't feel comfortable with him being a sure thing (baseball relative) ending the series.

I understand the Astros' frustration. West is absolutely terrible. But I think he probably got the call right.

JBJ and Devers. Would've never thought they would've been the power hitters this series.
