I had forgotten how much fun that 98 season was to watch. Breaking in to other games whenever they were at bat in Aug and Sept.
Crazy to watch everyone - EVERYONE- turned a blind eye to the fact these guys were so juiced up. There were a few folks that would point out before and after pics of how both were skinny then looked like Popeye.
They are both cheaters and neither handled themself well once caught- McGwire in front of Congress, Sammy in front of everyone.
As much as they did cheat it was still good to see St Louis honor Mark. Cubs have yet to honor Sammy - and he continued to cheat with corked bat, declining drug tests.
Still divided in HoF - they were all doing it at the time.

Absolutely revitalized baseball. It is certainly tainted looking at in the rear-view mirror, but it was fun for that year!

One of the most fun years of baseball ever.

Such a fun summer of baseball and kicked off the revitalization of the game. I'll never forget those months watching for updates.

But the documentary just wasn't very well done. Strange editing and didn't really cover Sosa much. I enjoyed it more for a trip down memory lane than the actual content.

I got the impression Sosa didn't cooperate at nearly the level McGwire did, which is hardly surprising given the way they've both handled themselves and the situation over the years.

It's a weird feeling looking back at it. It was so awesome at the time, but now it feels so fraudulent. And then there is knowing that this record which stood for so long and was so amazing to finally see broken would fall again very soon to a complete dbag

I love the part where Sosa forgot how to speak English in front of the congressional hearing.

I haven't watched the documentary yet but the reason Sosa hasnt been celebrated by the Cubs is because his stint in Wrigleyville did not end well. I don't remember the details of what led up to it, but he bailed on the team, leaving the ballpark in the middle of the last game of the '04 season. That was kinda the final straw.

Ricketts has also said that he is not welcome back until he comes clean on steroid use and appologizes and Sammy has been pretty clear that isnt going to happen and feels like the club manipulated the story and turned him into the bad guy.

One of the most impressive things I've seen was McGwire's BP in the Dome. He was consistently putting up shots nine and ten rows deep in the upper deck. It was incredible.

1) Went to the Dome with several friends to see McGwire take BP. Ron Gant (pride of Victoria) was shagging flies in the outfield and totally whiffed on one. A buddy of mine starts ragging on him from 50 rows up in the mezzanine when he gets a tap on the shoulder and here's, "You gotta problem with Ronnie Gant, big boy?"
8-10 of Ron Gant's cousins were sitting immediately behind us.

Haha. I grew up in Victoria and lived down the street from his momma.
