"3:05pm: The Mets are paying a combined $35MM of Verlander's 2023-24 salary, reports Joel Sherman of the New York Post. They'd pay half of his $35MM salary in 2025 if his option vests. Re: yordan being out of the lineup today

Can someone explain how we went from the days of Cal Ripken Jr. to giving stars off every 5th game? Are other teams doing this to this extent? Seems insane to give guys this many days off. Doesn't seem to be helping injuries be less common either.
