White Sox gave up 3 homers in the top of the 8th inning to lose to the Royals tonight. Have now lost 15 straight and their losing percentage is .752. 1962 Mets were 40-120.

The 15 game losing streak is a new record for the longest streak in franchise history; a history which goes back to 1894. They also had a 14 game losing streak earlier this season which tied the existing franchise record for consecutive losses.

Their save percentage dropped under 40% last night with the blown save.

There are some mind-blowing things going on statistically on the South Side this season.

Sox lose 13-7.

If it were the Cubbies and not the red headed step children from the Southside, this would be national news.

Crochet only allowed 1 run in 4 innings but the Sox only had 3 hits in 9 innings and lost Saturday 6-2.

I went to the day game in Arlington two weeks ago, which was loss #11.

Just saying. Had no idea I was watching a little history. But knew I was watching bad baseball.

Here's a question: would Martin Maldonado made the '62 Met's roster?

I don't think so. The Met's backup catcher that year was Choo-choo Coleman who had his career season in 1962, batting a respectable .250, well above twice of what Maldy's doing this year.

The White Sox are making a respectable run at being the worst in the modern era.

Still on pace to go 38-124.

They'd have to go 19-12 the rest of the way just to get to 50 wins.

12-19 would get them to 2003 Detroit's season and keep them from setting the AL record for losses.

Some rainouts would be a blessing for them.

Through 131 games, they're at negative 278 on run differential. On pace for negative 343. The record from the 20th century on is negative 349 by the 1932 Boston Braves, who rather remarkably went 77-77-1 despite that record.

Now 37 games back of FOURTH in the division.

Have to go 12-15 or better the rest of the way to avoid losing 120 (AL record is 119).

Some good news: They only need to win one more game to ensure that they don't finish 100 games below .500.

Some pretty incredible stats from the CHISOX.

Last in the Majors with 416 runs. Tampa and Miami are tied for 28th with 508.

Last in the Majors with 109 home runs. Yankee teammates Juan Soto and Aaron Judge have 88 between the two of them.

Last in the Majors with 1,528 total bases. More than 500 behind #1 Baltimore.

Yet hilariously 4 points ahead of Seattle in batting average (.220 to .216)

They've currently lost 8 games in a row and I can't decide if that's really even worth mentioning.

Only their 3rd longest streak this year (will have to go a ways to get to 14 and 21 Ls in a row like they did earlier in the year).

They had a stretch from May 4-15 where they went 8-4 to get to their high-water mark of 14-30 (.318).

17-75 since then.

23-101 outside of that week-and-a-half of resembling a MLB team.

Here's a WTF # for you: They are 5-5 against the division-leading Guardians and 3-33 against the rest of the division.

I think a case can still be made for the 1916 Philadelphia Athletics as the worst team of the modern era barring what the White Sox are doing.
They went 36-117 in a 153-game season for a .235 winning percentage. The Mets (40-120) were at .250. The White Sox, current 31-105, are at .228. The White Sox will have to go at worse than 7-19 to finish worse than those A's in winning percentage.

You can dig into them more here
https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/PHA/1916.shtml

but
Their team leader had 60 RBI in 140 games
They had a pitcher named Jack Nabors who went 1-20.
They had a reliver named Tom Sheehan who wet 1-16
The only pitcher they had with a winning record was a guy who went 2-1.
They finished 40 games behind the next-worse team and 54-1/2 games out of first.
Longest win streak: 2
Longest losing streak: 20
Blew 18 leads, shutout 14 times.
They went a combined 5-47 in June/July
They allowed 5 runs per game in an 8-team league where no one else gave up more than 3.8 runs per game.

Third double-digit losing streak of the season, and this one was 10 straight at home.

After 44 games, Astros were only 5 games better than the White Sox.

Since then, Astros are 56-38, White Sox are 17-77.

They have a realistic chance to break the post-1900 record for fewest wins at 36. It's happened twice, both by the notoriously bad Athletics in 1916 and 1919. The difference is, the White Sox might do it in 162 games, instead of 153 or 140, respectively

Among the interesting things here is that just a couple of years ago this was a team on the rise. (93 wins in 2021)

Moncada
Robert
Anderson
Jimenez
Vaughn

Made for a pretty interesting young core of position players

Now only a couple of those guys are left and other than Robert they have regressed hugely or been traded away.

Their team OPS is shockingly bad. They are at a .616 as a team right now which is the worst I could find in recent history.

They will likely have 0 guys hit 20 homers this year

They have 3 hitters that have enough at bats to qualify for the batting title, all 3 of them are negative WAR players.

And they don't get a top 10 pick this year to start restocking the talent.

Futility update after 140 games:

1962 Mets: 35-105 (finished 40-120-1)
2003 Tigers: 37-103 (finished 43-119)
2024 White Sox: 31-109

Remaining schedule

1 more @ BAL
3 @ BOS
3 vs. CLE
3 vs. OAK
3 @ LAA
3 @ SD
3 vs. LAA
3 @ DET

Having a very difficult time seeing the Sox avoiding 120+ losses...don't see 11 wins in the rest of that schedule.

Fan Appreciation Day against the Angels is a Thursday 1:10 game...actual attendance might be sub 1K.

Getting a little concerned since the Sox have won 2 of their last 5. They have to go no better than 7 and 10 the last 17 games to finish under .250 for the season.

Remarkably consistent with the home-away splits:

18-57 home
15-57 away

They've got a chance to lose 60+ at home and on the road.

3-12 finish would put them at 90 below .500 (36-126).

Sox got back on track after getting swept at home by Cleveland. Now need to play better than .500 to not beat the Mets record in 1962.

The 3 game win streak got me worried but the Sox bounced back with 2 losses to the Angels. Now they go to San Diego who is trying to make the playoffs.
