I was told a while back that guys in that era were all taking performance enhancers. If you weren't on roids, you were taking speed or on adderall.

Biggio never took roids.

Legit question - how long does Espada have? A horrible start two years in a row. I know the roster isn't what it used to be, but we are seriously underachieving.

I contend that this team is not underperforming by that much and this start is nowhere near as bad as last season's.

A lot of projections had us around 85 wins so they're not too far off of that.

Don't think 85 will do it this year.

Hypothetical question. Come July/Allstar break, if Meyers is still hitting .280 and .750 OPS, what can you get in a trade package? With his defensive metrics and those numbers, you would think you could get a much better haul than what we know he is worth.

Well, on a positive note, at least we didn't have to watch Ryan Pressley give up 8 earned runs in 0 innings last night in the 11th inning.

R. PRESSLY PITCHING FOR CHC
Koss ran for Wade Jr.
Ramos doubled to left, Koss to third.
Bailey singled to center, Koss scored, Ramos to third.
6-5
Wisely hit sacrifice bunt, Ramos scored, Bailey to second.
7-5
Yastrzemski walked, Wisely to second, Bailey to third.
Adames hit by pitch, Bailey scored, Yastrzemski to second, Wisely to third.
8-5
Lee singled to right, Wisely scored, Adames to second, Yastrzemski to third.
9-5
Chapman singled to left, Adames scored and Yastrzemski scored, Lee to second.
11-5
Flores singled to left, Lee scored, Chapman to third.
12-5

C. THIELBAR PITCHING FOR CHC

Koss struck out swinging.
Ramos doubled to left, Chapman scored, Flores to third.
13-5
Bailey hit sacrifice fly to center, Flores scored.
14-5

Video cued up for the epic meltdown.

I don't know.

I was just pointing out that based on where a lot of people projected this team they're not underachieving by much.

I think we as fans have inflated expectations and that's why it seems like they're severely underachieving but in reality they're not. They're just not that good.

Astros Bingo Update 5-7-25

Down to 79 win pace. It was 88 a week ago
Halfway to the 6 game losing streak square. Four people picked it.
Will keep a close eye on Pressly's job - he got nuked last night in extras
Jake 69 points above his .230 mark (nice)
Altuve now 46 points under his .300 mark.
Correa hit his 2nd home of the season last night! $33 million for a 9-HR pace
George hit his 4th! He's up to a 19-HR pace; his square is 20.
Shohei heating up with his 10th HR, now on pace for a 45 HR / 41 steal season.
Judge hits #12, on pace for 54.

This team is currently 6-11 on the road. Not a big sample size, but Astros fans have probably gotten spoiled with how well they've been away from Houston for years. Hopefully this team can at least become a .500 road team eventually, but the bats are going to have to heat up first. The game was practically over last night after allowing one big inning in the 1st.

back to Biggio...

the HBP was a part of his game pre- and post- supplement era

in 1995 he had 22 HBP

10 years later in 2005...he still had 17 HBP

So you are saying we just need to talk to MLB about fixing the hitter's eye in all the other parks now?

I'll say it. This team is offensively challenged as constructed and it's nots being used to maximize what it does have.

The biggest issue to me is the complete RHH lineup. It's allowing mediocre RHP to throw nothing but cutters/sweepers/sliders and get in a rhythm doing it. They don't have to change their motion or reset with LHH.

It's overloaded with OFers who are all RHH, low power guys. Positions that should be power hitters.

I'm totally lost as to why Cam Smith is on this roster. If you are going to have him up here he has to play every single day. Same with Dezenzo. Every day. Put them in LF and RF every freaking day. Or Altuve at LF and Zach at DH while Yordan is out. When/if Yordan comes back put Jose at 2B. Maximize what you do have. If you aren't going to get Cam every AB you can send his butt down where you can play him every day at AAA. It's like they wanted the feel good PR story more than the player development.

Add in the really bad baserunning where they just self implode. They make really bad decisions that wipe out the few base runners they do get on. That's coupled with the other side where teams seem to advance runners at will. The rules are built to take advantage of speed and we are going in opposite directions with our runners versus our opponents. They can get a walk and hit and plate a run. We can get a walk and two hits, not plate a run and manage an out.

Orioles are looking like this year's version of the '24 Astros so far with a 13-21 record. I expect them to get hot eventually, but maybe they'll be more willing to listen to trade offers for some of their young talent this season.

I agree with all of this, especially the Altuve in LF thing. I'll be honest, I don't know what benefit the front office thinks we are getting by putting Jose in Left. The only way that I would have understood it is if Bregman came back and they moved Paredes at 2B. But putting Jose in LF and thus taking away a spot from Dezenzo and/or Smith, AND using that open spot at 2B for Dubon or Rodgers, just flat out doesnt make sense to me.

How much of the Astros' woes can be attributed to moving away from analytics? It seems like our analytics department has been gutted and we've recently relied on old baseball foagies like Dusty, Bagwell, Espada, Jackson, etc to guide the club (or Crane just goes off the reservation)

For years we were the smartest team in baseball, now it feels like we are the dumbest.

Even Breggy coming back doesn't fix the heavy RHH situation. Yainer had reverse platoon splits his first year or so, but the book wasn't out on him yet. It's a tough problem to solve with such an unbalanced roster.

going back to the RHH lineup...

today's struggling starter for the Brewers allows:

.918 OPS to left-handed hitters

.744 OPS to right-handed hitters

I think our struggles are due to hitters not performing up to their capabilities, particularly guys like Yordan and Yainer. If those two guys were performing at last year's level, there wouldn't be near as much concern about the offense. Yordan has a negative WAR right now. And you can't blame that on facing so many righties. He's the one that should be flourishing.

If those two guys get going, we'll be okay. If not, it's going to be a long season with a lot of serious questions to answer heading into the offseason.

Yep. There were times last year where we had Yordan, Tucker, Caratini and Singleton all in at the same time.

This split is going to go on all season. It's just a poorly constructed roster. It needed a LHH outfielder as a platoon at a minimum. And if Jose really will be in LF, a switch hitting or LHH 2B would have been in order. I still hate releasing Singleton especially given the way the roster was made.

I think Dana did really well on getting a return for Tucker and Pressly. But this roster is very flawed.

I think we are going to find out Yordan has been playing with a broken hamate.

Just read that it's a right hand muscle strain and that Espada hopes he isn't on the IL more than 10 days. We'll see.

At least it's not the dreaded "discomfort" prognosis instead. Maybe they realize people are tired of hearing that.

The Astros prolly would have said Abraham Lincoln had to leave Ford Theater because of head discomfort.
