Shout out to Christian Vasquez who was signed late by the Astros and has performed way beyond expectations. He was unsigned until almost the end of spring training and has been a breath of fresh air both on and off the field. Glad he's back on the team.

Them Puerto Rican catchers are something else. Dude was hot coming off WBC. Good leader, plays well, and is one of those funny glue guys for a team.

if you openly rooted/celebrated for that play you are officially the only Texags member not invited to my pool party. Or my anything. We are not peers, I would never openly celebrate something like that.

Sure. Everyone wishes their team had loopholes set up by MLB that enabled them to have extra cash as well as a caveat that allows them to carry an additional player on the MLB roster due to Ohtani.

Correct. The Dodgers are the only team with additional hundreds of millions due to their settlement with MLB.

edit:

So, how much of the local media rights do the Dodgers ultimately shelter from revenue sharing over the life of the 25-year deal? It's somewhere around $2 billion.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/maurybrown/2026/01/26/mlb-didnt-cut-the-dodgers-a-6-billion-revenue-sharing-shelter-bankruptcy-court-did/

An extra 80 M a year would mean something like adding Corbin Burnes (6/210 = 35M), Max Fried (8/218 = 27M), and Tanner Scott (4/72 = 18M). I think that would save our season, no?

We are hitting Angels Stadium and Dodger Stadium this summer as part of our family vacation. Hit five on the east coast last year and getting close to making it to all of them. We have bought a team hat and other memorabilia at each stadium, including Yankees , Red Sox, Phillies, Mets, and Rangers.

My wife and daughter told me last week that they don't know if they can stomach buying anything Dodgers. I now consider myself to have been a successful husband and father!

Yes, the Dodgers are the only team with that loophole.

Yes.

https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/dodgers-tv-deal-includes-key-230000247.html

Quote from article (major points in bold):

Quote:

The Dodgers are able to keep an additional $66 million every year because of how their TV deal is structured with MLB. When the organization filed for bankruptcy in 2011, the league agreed to lock in a fair market value for the rights of Dodgers baseball.

Therefore, a significant portion of the $334 million the Dodgers earn annually from the deal is exempt from MLB's revenue sharing due to the bankruptcy settlement.

"The first big turning point came when the Dodgers partnered with Time Warner Cable to launch SportsNet LA, but because the Dodgers had just gone bankrupt and MLB wanted to help one of their historic franchises get better, there was an exception in the contract," independent sports journalist Joon Lee reported.

"Under MLB rules, teams are supposed to share a big chunk of their local TV money with the rest of the league. Think of it like a tax system. Big market teams help smaller teams so everyone has a chance to compete. That taxes roughly one-third of the teams' local TV money, but when the Dodgers signed their TV deal, it completely shattered expectations.

"The deal was roughly $8 billion over the next five years, far more than MLB had projected. If MLB applied its typical formula, the Dodgers would have owed about $95.2 million a year into revenue share. But here's the twist: Because the Dodgers had just gone bankrupt, MLB agreed in federal court to lock in a fair market value for the rights of Dodgers baseball games on television."

In 2013, the Dodgers partnered with Time Warner Cable (now known as Spectrum) on a 25-year, $8.35 billion deal. The partnership was the genesis of SportsNet LA, the regional sports network which the Dodgers own.
The Dodgers will be exempt from paying the full 34 percent of MLB's revenue sharing until 2039, which in turn, has helped the organization build its current baseball dynasty.

And --special consideration regarding Ohtani: https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/48545156/mlb-rule-place-ohtani-dodgers-bizarre

Quote from article (major points in bold):

Quote:

CHICAGO -- Cubs manager Craig Counsell thinks a Major League Baseball rule that allows the Los Angeles Dodgers to carry 14 pitchers because of Shohei Ohtani is "bizarre."

Major league teams are allowed to have a maximum of 13 pitchers on their active 26-man roster from Opening Day through Aug. 31. From Sept. 1 through the end of the season, the roster limits increase to 14 pitchers and 28 active players.

But Ohtani is designated as a two-way player, which means he doesn't count as a pitcher. So, the reigning World Series champions have 14 pitchers on their active roster.

Asked about the 13-pitcher limit before Monday's 5-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, Counsell said he has never understood the reasoning for the restriction.

"It's a rule to help offense, I think, more than anything, if you ask me," Counsell said. "And then there's one team that's allowed to carry basically one of both, and that he gets special consideration. Which is probably the most bizarre rule. ... For one team."

The two-way player designation is for players with at least 20 innings pitched in the major leagues and at least 20 big league starts as a position player or designated hitter with at least three plate appearances in each of those games. The player has to reach those numbers in the current season or any one of the two most recent seasons.

I would really recommend sitting in the OF for the Dodgers game if you haven't already bought tickets. Those are the only seats that the average fan can afford and the people are a lot less snobby and have a lot of baseball knowledge. I talked to a Dodger fan from El Salvador for about 3 hours when I went to game there 20 years ago, great guy, and kept me entertained by screaming "YOU SUCK" at Jose Valentin every time he was playing catch with Milton Bradley before each inning and wouldn't throw the ball to these kids in the front row.

12:30 start so being in the shade part of the game was the priority so outfield was eliminated. But good news is the probability of getting knifed afterwards is much lower with it being midafternoon.

going back to the Mariners...and ripped from the headlines...

the state of Washington just passed 9.9% tax on all millionaires in the state effective 01-01-2028

most athletes don't seem to care about taxes, but this is getting serious in some places

Josh Naylor just lost $6 MM in future earnings from the offseason contract he signed with Seattle

Cal Raleigh will lose about $7 MM. They both backloaded their deals...which looks like a mistake now

Speaking of development, Janek (the Astros 1st round pick in 2024) is sporting a .395 OPS in Corpus. He's already 23, so hopefully he figures out how to at least be Maldonado with the bat by 2028.

Does this factor in that taxes are calculated based on where the work is performed? So their entire salary won't be taxed at those rates.

Russian roulette with pitchers. The Tigers GM was in a tough spot last year, much like Dana Brown was with Bregman, Valdez, etc. It's difficult to trade talent when you're competing for a playoff spot. Now they are stuck with no pitcher and no big trade ability. Sucks.

good question

it's not a strict jock tax -- like an Astro player incurs when he plays in Oakland or Anaheim

it's based upon "Washington-source income"

and it applies to part-time residents and non-residents

In my opinion this is the pick that gets Dana fired. I don't fault him as much on roster construction due to being hamstrung by prior salary decisions and lack of farm system when he got here. I don't even hate the Matthews draft pick that much because he had tools. But there was zero reason to draft Janak where we did. You should never draft a catcher 1st round unless he's a guaranteed future Allstar/HoF player like Mauer or Posey. Janak had zero tools to cause him to be a first round pick. He was a college player who hadn't even competed against legit competition. When you know you have a farm system hurting for talent, you don't waste a first round pick on a guy whose ceiling is defense first .250 hitting catcher with zero power.

Same thing Nolan Ryan had in his elbow when he threw his 4th no hitter. Along with muscle pulls in his legs and groin.
