Everyone knows my feelings on Hairston, but you have to hate to see someone get hit in the head. He appeared to be OK, so I don't think we have much to worry about. They just took him out as a precaution. The Cubs pitching staff, save for Novoa, looked great today. Granted, the Giants didn't have too many major leaguers in there. But it was nice to see guys like Rich Hill, Howry, Eyre, and a couple of youngsters in the 6'7" Sean Marshall and Jae Kyuk Ryu look dominating. Felix Pie had a nice extra base knock to the opposite field and there were a couple of other players that I was not very familiar with that looked good at the plate, too.

On a personal note, right as I was talking to my dad at the game as they came back for the bottom of the 5th, the cameraman zoomed in on him and my mom for a nice close-up. Perfect timing for the phone call, I guess.

And for the record, I think us Cubs fans should just ignore ignorant attacks like the latest one on the Kerry Wood surgery thread. It does no good to argue with jackholes like that. Let's take the high ground and not respond at all. I know it will be hard to do (especially for me), but I think that will save us all some headaches in the long run.

Old Style, your parents have spring season tickets? I apologize if you've answered this before.

Yes, they do. Second row behind the Cubs dugout on the aisle. Great seats. They're both retired, so they spend the entire month out there and have done so for several years now.

I am so jealous. What I wouldn't give to be able to see the Cubs more in person.

I like you're thinking, Old Style. I'll do my best to refrain from commenting on their foolishness. It'll help us enjoy the season a little more.

You and me both, brian. The things I miss the most about living in Chicago are the pizza and being able to go to Wrigley at the drop of a hat. I never realized how good I had it there.

As of right now, I think I am going to only be able to go to the Spring Training game in 3 weeks and maybe a weekend series in Chicago. It really sucks that all of the games in Houston are on a weekday, so I cannot get down there to see them in Houston.

The Chicago media's trying to drub up something out of some comments that Stone made about Prior. They weren't personal but you can see where they media's trying to take it. Prior responded well.

quote:
"I don't take it personally," Prior said. "I don't have a problem with Stone. I don't think he has a problem with me. I'm sure he's just doing his job."Prior was then asked if Stone, a former Cubs broadcaster who left amid controversy after the 2004 season, was respected in the Cubs' clubhouse.

"I'm not going to comment on that," Prior replied. "Obviously he's made some enemies in this clubhouse, for good or for bad. Whether it was his fault or it wasn't his fault, that's something we've tried to put to bed.

"That happened a couple of years ago. What I've learned in four years is I don't take anything personally anymore. I guess it's just part of the game. I respect the attention I get. I understand the scrutiny I'm under."

Prior's a good man. I'd hate the media if they weren't the source of most of my information.

It's hard to argue with what Stone said (per the Tribune article)...

quote:
"My feeling is that if Mark Prior was 100 percent, they wouldn't be handling him like they're handling him," Stone said on WSCR-AM 670. "Now I'm not saying he's hurt, I just think that it's kind of strange.

"And although I know there would never be anyone around the Chicago Cubs who would mislead anybody about Mark Prior, I have a feeling that if he were 100 percent he would be doing what [Carlos] Zambrano's doing."

The funniest part of the article I thought was Wood's response...

quote:
"Who's that?" Wood said. "Oh, is he still around?"

I agree with Stoney, but I just wish this would all die already. I guess the only way that happens is if Woody and Prior get healthy and stay healthy for an extended period.

I am resigned to the fact that we're going to have to deal with this every year with Prior and Wood. If these nagging injuries continue for Prior, I see him sitting on the block real soon. There were already rumors about him over the winter with Abreu. I don't see those diminishing (unfortunately).
Old Style

FWIW, Hendry has said that he never seriously considered trading Prior. He was approached with an offer and listened. Nothing more.
Old Style

And the heaviest rumors came from Baltimore in a deal that would have sent Prior to the O's for Tejada.

Not saying he had Prior on the block but it would've been bad news for him to admit to it.

Tough outing for Z today:

2 2/3 in, 3 h, 4 er, 3bb

13 mph wind blowing out against the Dominican team, but still not quite what I was expecting.

He looked good at first, then lost control. Walked Pujols and Big Papi before an RBI single to Moist Hands Alou. Then a huge bomb to Adrian Beltre. Tough lineup for the Dominicans.

Lee extension talks gain steam

March 9, 2006

BY MIKE KILEY Staff Reporter

MESA, Ariz. -- Cubs general manager Jim Hendry has had two negotiating sessions within the last week with first baseman Derrek Lee's agent, Casey Close, to lay the foundation for a contract extension. It's possible a deal could be finalized before the season opens April 3 at Cincinnati.

Close is in Arizona to watch Lee play in the World Baseball Classic. A couple of weeks ago, Lee said he had a figure in mind that he would agree to. There has been speculation it could be close to the five-year, $60 million contract Paul Konerko signed over the winter with the White Sox.

Lee's preference is that any extension be finished before the season begins.

DOWN AND DUSTY: The Cubs might need right-handed reliever Scott Williamson too much to use him as trade bait. Not only did Williamson pitch well his last time out, but right-hander Roberto Novoa is out for at least several days with a respiratory infection and fluid in his lungs. He was quarantined for a day.

A number of Cubs are hacking, coughing and laid low by allergies because the Phoenix area hasn't seen rain in more than 140 days.

In addition to Novoa's illness, right-hander Michael Wuertz boosted Williamson's value by giving up a grand slam to the San Diego Padres' Josh Barfield in the eighth inning Wednesday. Wuertz and Novoa are competing with Williamson for bullpen roles.

"I asked [Wuertz] if anything was wrong, and he said, 'No, just had a bad day,''' manager Dusty Baker said. "He had Barfield 1-2 and got a [slider] up over the plate.''

ANTICIPATION: Pitching coach Larry Rothschild reiterated Wednesday that he expects Mark Prior will be ready to start the second game of the season April 5 at Cincinnati.

"It's a distinct possibility,'' Rothschild said. "I anticipate it.''

Prior faces hitters today in batting practice for the first time this spring. Rothschild hasn't picked out a date for Prior's Cactus League debut but said it could come next week.

"We are right on schedule as long as we can keep pushing forward and have no setbacks,'' Rothschild said.

QUICK TURNAROUND: Rothschild added that Kerry Wood, who had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Tuesday, already was throwing a ball Wednesday -- and he wasn't sitting in a chair, either.

"He stood up and threw without putting a lot of pressure on the knee,'' Rothschild said. "Just basically tossing 90 balls to keep the motion and looseness through the shoulder.''

ROUGH GOING: Utility player John Mabry started at third base against the Padres and made two errors.

"He's a backup everything -- first, third, left and right,'' Baker said. "It's one day. He made some good plays. He's been battling the bad back. So he's playing third again [today against Colorado] to get him acclimated.''

Glendon Rusch gave up five earned runs in three innings of work against San Diego. If Jerome Williams can pull out another solid outing he'll most probably have the upper hand. I like having Jerome out there over Rusch. Rusch makes for a better long relief guy. That is of course if Jerome is pitching well.

We'll have to keep our eyes on Prior's outing tomorrow. It'll be real interesting to see how he pitches. I have no intentions of being a Steve Stone but when they said they were going to take it slow with him they weren't kidding. I almost find it a little worrisome. He's lost some of confidence that he had gained earlier in his career so it would be nice to gain some of that back in spring training if possible.

I don't know if this has been discussed on another thread or not, but do you guys think Baker just turned a blind eye to what Bonds was doing (i.e. don't ask, don't tell), or do you think he knew firsthand of all the steroids?

Dusty is clueless.
bluestainedivy
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Dusty is clueless but there's absolutely no way that you can be around the game long enough to make it to be a big league manager and not notice such a dramatic change. It was the attitude of leadership in baseball. Steroids were either giving individuals and teams advantages and in order to keep up the others had to take part as well. I don't condone the behavior at all though. Heck, I think the person most guilty is Selig. If it's good for the game temporarily than turn a blind eye. Now that it's bad for the game lets do testing. No one ever considered the long term consequences.

Dusty was in a tough situation as was anyone who was in management during the peak of the steroid era. What could he do? Ownership had given their approval by giving Greg Anderson full access to all players and PacBell park. Even if Dusty wanted to say something who was he going to tell? As manager, he couldn't throw his star player under the bus for multiple reasons: team performance and team revenues. As much as I disagree with Dusty on a lot of management decisions, I don't hold him responsible for this one. He was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

That means there actually is a living human in favor of him staying.
