If you arrive back to the US, once you clear customs go to another terminal. There is a narrow sidewalk with people EVERYWHERE trying to get to Ubers and taxis. Took us over 20 min to exit terminal and walk through the wade of people (probably 50 yards?).

We are in a long taxi line. Ubers 30+ minutes. It is the biggest cluster I've seen.

We called our hotel and they said we had to go to A or B. We thought no thanks, we will get a taxi/Uber. Yeah now wish we had.

Yeah, we fly out of E on Thursday. Was told to go in and out of A or B and catch the tram to E.

We were dropped off in C. But yes when you get back def take the underground shuttle to another terminal.

Does anyone know what the deal is?

I also noticed international flights departing out of C now.

What an epic cluster. You would think they would have planned for the traffic disruption. An incredible testament to government planning.

The last few times I flew out of IAH (in the fall) they had everyone with a departing flight in Terminal E checking in and going through security in Terminal C. That too was a huge mess and security took a while. What a mess.

For those of you in the know, I ask if my plans are solid:

We are flying international on United on a Saturday morning in a couple of weeks departing around noon. We return a week later on a Sunday am. I have my parking already reserved at the parking spot on JFK. I feel confident that my flight will depart from C, and it will obviously arrive back at E.

Will 3 hours be enough for check in and security at C on a Saturday am? When we arrive back and clear Customs and Immigration at E, can we then take the underground tram to C to get our shuttle to the Parking Spot?

Thanks for suggestions.

3 hours should be fine. We made it through quick the other day in C (and flew out of C), but it also was 5:20AM.

I can't speak for taking the tram back to C for the vehicle, but assuming you parked there I would think it would be fine.

I dropped off my wife at Terminal C on Memorial Day at around 5pm, and the traffic was every bit as bad as that picture with the people getting out to take their bags and run for it. It took us about 45 mins to get from where those folks were to the dropoff area for Terminal C and another 20-25 mins for me to get out of the airport after that. When I went to pick her up two days later, they had some cops out directing traffic in a couple of the dropoff and pickup locations and it was significantly better, although I think most of the difference was that it was not Memorial Day anymore.

The problem they have is that right after that flyover into C/D/E, every bit of traffic gets pinched down to one lane. And from that point forward, anywhere there are two lanes, there is a line extending out from one of the pickup/dropoff areas that blocks at least one of the two lanes. I think they need to go back to the no parking at the pickup areas model and force everybody to wait at the cell phone lots. If there are no lines sticking out of the pickup areas, traffic flows 100X better.

I wonder what the situation is like for the shuttles from the remote long term lots? The Parking Spot is the one we are using.

They are driving on the same roads as the cars, so they will have the same problems. I would give yourself an extra 45-60 mins ahead of whatever you usually arrive, just in case the traffic is all snarled up again.

I'm hoping this will be the case for my wife and I. We have a 7:20 am flight this Friday that I believe will be out of Terminal C. I'm hoping we are there early enough to beat the gridlock.

We had the same issue while riding a parking shuttle the Friday before spring break. We didn't hit traffic until we got close to the terminal but then came to a complete stop for like 20 minutes where traffic was merging.

Next time we'll be going in and out of A/B unless it is a way off peak time/day.

On international arrival, I strongly suggest riding the Skyway over to AB to catch an Uber home. Cluster that was worse than anything I saw in Europe.

How can you take the Skyway (inside security) from E to A/B if you have retrieved your checked bags and have no ongoing ticket once you clear Customs at E?

Or do you mean take the inter-terminal below-ground tram (out of security) from E to C to catch the shuttle?

Normally we connect through IAH from our much smaller regional airport. But this time we are driving to IAH because our international flight is a once a week, Saturday flight. And we don't want to miss it because of a regional jet being hung up at a smaller airport (This happens more than you think).

Thanks for all the answers!

Edit: Just got off the phone with The Parking Spot on JFK. She said allow for 30 to 45 min extra that day we leave, and to go to D once we clear Customs for the ride back to the lot. Hope this helps others.

We only saw the option for the underground tram once we came out of customs/immigration yesterday after we got our luggage. Tram was to the right and exit the terminal was straight ahead.

My bad. You are right about the skyway, use the Tram. Just find a way to get out of D/E for Ubers. It a hell scape.

so is it better to drive and park or take an uber to and from airport? we are gonna be out of town for a week and was thinking about taking uber.
JMac03

I don't really think it matters. Just plan for extra time and plan on getting dropped off at Terminal A or B.

From a traffic standpoint, it won't matter. The uber will have to drive on the same roads you will have to for terminal parking, and the same roads the remote parking area buses will have to drive. If you come in through A-B instead of C-D-E, you should be in much better shape in any of those cases.

Personally, if parking on site I'd park in A/B. If taking an uber or shuttle I'd still take the sky tram (inside security) or the underground tram (outside security) to A/B.

A/B seem to be the most offset and easiest to escape the mess from. C was still a cluster last time I parked there, but parking in A/B I was in and out the same as pre-construction.

That's been my experience, at least.

Continuing to park in A/B for all flights using that garage or just tell Parking Spot or whoever you use you are departing B. As noted above coming back internationally is the biggest mess as you end up outside security regardless if you carry on or check bags. It was about a 15 minute wait as it was a deep line to get on the old underground tram and head back to A/B. Still a better option than coming into C/E to depart.

Also if you are parking on-site in the terminal garages, reserve in advance and save 30%.

This. I have used this to save money at Hobby. But beware, on some phones, (I have Iphone Xr), the QR code they send to use when you enter the garage won't display in the email or by going to their website. So take a printed copy of the code with you to use when you enter the garage.

If you are thinking of parking at the terminal you might need a different plan.

FWIW yesterday my wife ignored the "garage full" sign and managed to get into the A/B garage.
