Yes because people are worried their bags will get lost. I did a carryon for 9-10 days for Europe in the fall.

But when I go to Mexico I always bring a checked bag that is full to the max. And wear 1/5 of it.
If I remember correctly, you did say that you're a female so I'll allow it.

I'm male but I'm the worst about bringing too many shoes. On my recent 10 day trip to Puerto Rico, I think I only brought 4 pair of shoes. Wore them all but still, seems excessive.

It's also how people drive. Pull into a parking lot, and then slow to a crawl looking around.

Considering I think I brought 3 pairs of shoes to Europe I would say yes you do lol.

I rock 3 or so in my around the world bag. Lucchese Ropers on my feet, flip flops, and running shoes. Add in hotel slippers if you want. The Fairmont Dubai ones are must have for inflight cruise wear.

My favorite is the people that drag a carry on roller down the jetway then get to the terminal and immediately stop.

Causing people to run into the back of their roller bag and tripping over each other to clear the bottle neck.

Never understood this. Rather than get in to an open space in the terminal people immediately freak out and slam on the brakes.
That's just how people walk period.

Stop right at the end of the jetway
Stop as soon as they get off the escalator
Stop as soon as they leave the secure side

people are dumb

There is almost nothing worse than walking in an airport. People get dumber every minute they spend in one, i swear. Slow walking, stopping and staring at everything, never knowing where to go etc etc. My wife always makes fun if me for how annoyed I get at all of the idiots wandering around like junkies on the streets of Baltimore.

I fly a few times a month and have status with both Southwest and United so get bags for free, but I almost always carry on except for longhaul flights. It's the time component that others mentioned. I hate waiting 30+ minutes for a bag when my plane lands at 10 pm.

I'm not sure what your specific united status gets you, but I have united club card, and it comes with Premier access benefits. Last few years since I've had this card, our bags are always within the first 15-20 bags that come out.

I almost always check a bag. I did lose one once, but it was 40 years ago when I was still at A&M. Got it back within a few hours.

I carryon a backpack. I keep a pair of shorts/shirt/shoes in it as a change of clothes when traveling just in case. I check a bag to have all the clothes/items I might need. I'd rather over pack than under pack. If I'm going for a quick overnight or day trip, sure, I'll do carryon, but I'm usually at least two nights, sometimes more.

I can understand not checking bags if you're in a time crunch. I also never had a job where I travelled weekly like some of you.

I have noticed how many more people are carry on exclusive. Frankly, it's a PITA for everybody else on the flight. No place to put stuff. Takes too long for gate attendants to get bags from people to put below, etc. I wish they'd enforce the bag size restrictions too.

Airlines should charge for carryons and check bags for free. Flip the fees and turn planes faster.

I will flag myself as someone who will put both my backpack and carryon in the overhead at times, but only when my carryon is also a backpack (or a Halfday garment duffle) where combined they still take up less space than one actual carryon (typically by a significant amount)

The last few times I have flown for work, I had to check a bag. I don't care if you are the first bags out. I stood around waiting for 30+ minutes for the the belt to even think about starting. The worst was IAH and it took almost an hour for the bags to get there. I miss Changi so much. I used to be able to be in a taxi from touchdown including checked bags and immigration in under 20 minutes. I basically never stopped walking.

I'm in the never check a bag camp. At a work conference, there is always one guy in jeans. The guy who checked his bag and it didn't come out the conveyor. I recall an important client meeting when a young guy had to borrow a jacket to wear over a T-shirt. Don't be that guy.

If you don't have status, get your airline credit card. Puts you in 2 status, get in line early. Get your overhead space. It's always the 4 & 5s who can't get space.

If you travel for leisure, then you overpack anyway. Go ahead and check. We have stopped that practice entirely. Don't overpack!!

I'm usually group 4 and just don't get carried away trying to sit as close to the front as possible when I select seats. Always overhead room if you get a little deeper, and it doesn't mean you have to go all that far back.

Going on an Asian cruise this summer that includes a few days in Tokyo, and we don't plan to check bags. Our stateroom won't have a lot of space for luggage anyway. We have travel sized backpacks (Cotopaxi Allpas), which will force us to pack light.

We only do carry-on bc it forces us to pack lighter/efficient and it saves time when we land. I hate waiting 40 min for my bags and I have had lost luggage in the past (with a terrible response from the airline)

I always check a bag and haven't really had any bad experiences. And now it's also much easier to send your luggage ahead (domestic and international - makes going through customs very easy) if you want to have it waiting for you at the hotel or wherever. Usually just carry on my camera stuff and electronic devices so I'm not cramming bags into the overhead bin. Which means I'm sometimes a victim of The Overhead Bin Rearranger who needs to cram, cram, cram. I've even had someone ask me if I would just keep something on my lap since it's smaller than their bag. Thanks, but no.

The boarding process would go much quicker if the airlines boarded everyone back to front. A flight attendant would close all of the overhead bins and open them from the back to the front as people board. If someone gets caught opening an overhead bin in the front of the aircraft, the flight attendant would correct that action...they've never had a problem getting on my backside in the past.

As someone who has been platinum/had the cc for work, that is pure luck/maybe you fly into a good airport. We'd laugh and count how many non came our first, or half the flight would be tagged and it moot too. It made 0 difference on any flight i ever took with them other than maybe they never got lost. DEN takes forever so I prayed I wouldn't have it gate checked.

My favorite was once it did get premium access and made the sfo-den flight before mine, so when I got there, it was just cruising around the conveyor and probably had been for 1.5 hours or whatever the time was as our flights hadnt come out yet.

I have only flown twice since 2015, and Southwest mishandled my checked luggage both times. It was on the return leg home so it wasn't that big of a deal - once it was a carseat (and we had a spare one to use to drive home) and once it was the suitcase full of dirty laundry for 6 people. Both times it was at my door early the next morning.

Travel with 4 kids is a bit chaotic but they can all wear their own backpack, so we packed a LOT into carryons.

Yes a lot more carrying on because airlines are charging for checked luggage now.

True, but it happened on both of the Southwest flights I was on today and bags are free there. I find it especially odd on southwest. I overheard the luggage guys talking this morning and they mentioned only having ~50 checked bags on a full flight.
Southwest, in general, refuses to enforce the one bag in the overhead and personal item under the seat so the later passengers get to check their bags b/c some chuck wagon puts his carryon and back pack in the overhead.

I legitimately don't understand why this is not done. Why do people in 1st or Biz class want to get on the plane early anyway? Just to watch everyone else struggle through while taking elbows and duffle bags to the face and knee? Do people enjoy sitting in a stuffy plane longer? The period of time when the plane is on the ground is the worst as well. No wifi, entertainment or sufficient AC.
Obviously wouldn't work for Southwest but any flight where you have assigned seats it would seem like a much better approach.

You get on first in first to get your crap in a bin either above your seat or ahead of it, and to get a PDB.
