We are going to La Fortuna and Tamarindo late July. It's our second trip to Costa Rica. Last time we were advised on here to book our vehicle through Vamos instead of the National chains because we were told the National chains like Enterprise and such will charge you more once you get there. I'm seeing around $1,050 at Enterprise and $1,500 for Vamos for the same vehicle. Vamos does show the Mandatory insurance of around $19 a day. Am sure Enterprise is not. Vamos was great for us last time. Stay with Vamos or save a few hundred dollars?
If you do book with Vamos again, be sure to tell them you are a repeat customer and they'll give you a "loyalty rate". My experience has been 10-15% off depending on how many times you've booked with them. There's no place on the booking website to do this, but if you call/email they'll do the adjustment for you.

Use MyTanFeet to get a jump start on drive conditions and assistance planning for pitstops to La Fortuna.

Returned in June 2023 with my family, including 3 small kids. We stayed at Tabacon in La Fortuna and Nirvana Boutique Villas in Tamarindo.

We are using them for our whale watching tour in Uvita tomorrow.

Yes, the drive from San Jose to La Fortuna is about 3 hours. However, due to poor road conditions and construction delays, it can take longer. We were at a standstill multiple times en route.

In La Fortuna, I've stayed at Los Lagos Hotel, Spa & Resort and Hotel Magic Mountain. The former offers pools of varying temperatures and spacious accommodations a short shuttle drive away from the hotel's amenities. The latter is a good option if you won't have a car and wish to be closer to the city center.

We've been to Manuel Antonio and La Fortuna. Wanting to explore the West this time and looking for recommendations of places to go and stay.
Prefer:
In the rainforest
Drivable from Liberia Airport
Spa for wife
Few/no kids
Doesn't have to be close to a beach if other preferences are met!

If you were willing to fly into Liberia (direct flights from DFW) I would highly recommend Andaz Costa Rica Resort at Peninsula Papagayo. We went this summer and it was amazing!
We've done this exact trip as well.

Highly recommend - especially if you are a globalist and can get a suite.

This place was great. Highly recommend.
