Flights are also cheaper out of Austin than Dallas on American. Austin is getting better about having direct flights too - AA flies nonstop to Jamaica and DR (I think next year Saturday's only)
Yeah, that was the point I was making. Other than the non-stops we are starting to get, most of the flights out of Austin to a major vacation destination are going to be connecting flights, so we get the benefit of competition because United knows it is just as easy to fly American through Dallas as it is to fly United through Houston. Whereas American knows they won't have any competition for a non-stop from Dallas to wherever and United knows they won't have competition for their non-stops out of Houston. So even though they involve an extra leg of flying and connect to the same flights, the fares to most destinations served by United out of IAH and American out of DFW will be cheaper by a significant margin flying from Austin or San Antonio and connecting through IAH or DFW.
