The wind there is not a joke.
Definitely check the forecasts before starting and postpone if there are going to be extreme gusts.
The first time I did it, I did not check the forecast. I literally had to crawl the last half mile on one of the narrower stretches of path which had a big drop off. Later found out there were gusts of up to 80mph and solid wind of 60 mph.
A windy day need not be wasted. You can hike beautiful McKittrick Canyon. There are other great day hikes there like the Permian Reef hike and Hunter Peak.
While you're in the area you can make a short drive up to Carlsbad Caverns.
I usually stay in Van Horn. If you're into sports memorabilia, eat at a Mexican food place called Chuy's. John Madden always stopped there going cross country in his bus and there are lot's of pics of him and signed pics from former NFL and Southwest Conference players. The food isn't great but the atmosphere compensates for it.
