Thailand (cheap, best beaches in the world)
Colombia (cheap, amazing weather, second greatest biodiversity in the world)
Italy (not as cheap, but would love to retire here for the food and wine alone)

Maybe Spain. Familiar language. Great food and wine. Europe. High quality of life.
Spain is damn near perfect. I'd go there in a second if it was a viable option.

I've always thought it would be nice to do a long term rental in a place (30-60 days) then move to another place or return home for a bit then repeat. Anybody done something like that?

This is where I'm at. I'd love to move back to Italy (lived there for 18 months) but with kids and potentially grandkids back in the states I'm not sure I'd want to settle in one place.

I'm in the exact same boat as you and this is my plan as well to a "T". Just need to figure out where we want to buy a house in Thailand etc. Can't wait!

South Island of New Zealand or Western Australia would be at the top of my list. I have too many family connections in TX to move there permanently though.
Are you talking Perth, essentially? Or something smaller like a place near Margaret River? That area of the world has always piqued my interest.

Not retire, but spend significant time in Costa Rica, Italy, Summit County Colorado and keep Texas as "home".

It would be very, very tough to retire abroad.
Our kids, extended families & friends are all here. Hopefully grandkids in the next 10-15 years.

I'd like to retire in a rural area somewhere & take a couple of nice (2-3 weeks, maybe longer) vacations per year abroad & smaller trips to places around the US/N.America.

If my situation were different, life in Spain would be pretty amazing. I love it there.

Perth is a great city but definitely wouldn't be budget friendly for retirement. Would definitely consider Margaret River or somewhere on the SW coast.

Yeah, Australia used to be high on my list of bug out locations, but Covid and their climate change stuff has killed that idea.
I lived in Sydney's Northern Beaches for 12 years until I left permanently on Jan. 31st, 2020.

Returned to LAX from a business trip to Melbourne on March 6th, 2020. They were already out of toilet paper in the stores.

As they say in Australia, they lost the plot.

Funny. I just boarded a flight from Houston to California and there are people wearing Covid masks. I'd almost forgotten about them.

While it has gone nuts in some areas, reality is it was always like that but you just didn't hear about it as much. They did do to the extreme with Covid which did surprise me. Still a crap ton of positives for why to live there. Amazing country. Biggest obstacle is cost of living. It's pretty bloody expensive across the country (although I see us catching up more and more).

I live in Western Australia for 6 years (Perth) and concur on both. If you have family, it's way too far away from everything. And it's expensive as hell. Past that it's Southern California weather, beaches but with no people building, urban sprawl. It's magic.

My dad retired before my mom due to health reasons. She retired a couple of years later so they could both have free state retiree health insurance coverage. Within 6 months after she retired, vascular parkinson's had her in a wheelchair and made the travel they had planned much more difficult. Don't wait until retirement to do the things you want.

Not sure actually. From our meeting it sounded like he was in his 60's.

But that really bummed me out to hear.

This! Similar scenario with my parents.

Mom retired and within a year was diagnosed with multiple myloma....my father retired to take care of her....she fought it like a warrior for 8 years....their retirement years together were spent at MD Anderson.

To be fair there is a covid wave right now along with other weird viruses going around, and airports/airplanes are disgusting in general.

Agree. Both my mom and dad were still working when my mom got pancreatic cancer. He retired at 63 to take care of her. She died the next October.

Sometimes retirement dreams don't work out. Don't wait for things if you can afford to do them now.

Might be different in different parts if the country but I found no real difference between Perth and all of the rural beach communities (which I also lived in - Bunbury and Dunsborough). Might be different say in the North East/Queensland rural communities. As I said before, the SouthWest region is absolute bliss. Cost of living is the biggest obstacle.

had a coworker back in '17 all set to retire. They bought a place in Colorado. He and his wife went up for a long weekend to work on the place. Wished him well on Thursday before he left. He woke up Saturday AM to do yoga with his wife and keeled over. I was early 30s at the time and really affected me.

The cost of living (housing) in Northern France is very reasonable when compared to the South. You can get a really nice property with housing for yourself and a gite to rent out.
