I've been trying to take a week off work for about a month now but it keeps getting pushed back due to work. I just need some time off to refresh and was going to do a week of scuba diving in Roatan. Now it looks like the trip can finally happen starting 10/14.

However, I've read that the rainy season in Roatan starts in mid-October and goes through January.

Has anyone been to Roatan during this time to give feedback on the weather & diving conditions?

FYI: I know I misspelled Roatan in the topic title.

I want you to give Jennifer at Aggieland scuba a call. She arranges all the travel for the dive shop and really knows so much about diving around the world. Here is their info.

Viz can be affected somewhat but diving is still good. The water is still pretty warm. No shorties needed. We like Infinity Bay if you need rec on a place to stay.

I would also recommend Bay Adventures for scuba travel. We've used them in the past and they do a good job. You'll have to do an internet search for them.

October is the low, low season for Roatan and Belize because it is rainy.

With all that said, if you just want to dive, and do nothing but dive, just book at CoCo View. They will pick you up at the airport. They are the diver's dive lodge in Roatan. No one does it better than them. They do not have a beach - just be forewarned.

Anthony's Key is also good, as is Bananarama.

Don't stay at Fantasy Island. Is it a dump. CoCo View is across the channel from Fantasy Island and it's much better. I know this from experience.

You might also be able to get a deal at Turneffe Flats or Turneffe Island Lodge in Belize. We've been to both. They are both amazing, with the latter one being really a cut above everything else in the region. However, they may close for October. It's definitely worth an ask though. Both places I'd recommend over Roatan.

I dived Roatan in early January 2007/8/doesn't really matter, but a while ago.

There had been recent storms, so the visibility was low to them.... like 80 feet of vis, ****ing awesome.

We did like 20 dives over 7 days, 3 a day with night dives. All Nitrox. Bring your own O2 meter because their Nitrox numbers weren't very accurate.

Stayed at Fantasy Island, went with the College Station dive club at the time.

Had a blast and the best diving I ever did.

Edit, saw someone say Fantasy Island is a dump and it wasn't nice by any means, but it was my first time out of the country besides Canada and border towns, so didn't really have a reference point. It was tired and worn out, but it's a poor poor country.

The monkeys chasing people and stealing food, sneaking into rooms was funny at the time (I was 21) but would probably be really tiring now.

CoCoView was the best when we used to go. You could easily do six or seven dives a day. It is really geared for experienced divers. They used to leave tanks available 24/7 in case you wanted to do a late night dive in the front yard.

I'm looking at staying in the West End. After diving, I like to explore the local shops, restaurants, and bars. West End seems to have lots of those in easy walking distance. I'm not one just to lounge on the beach. I was looking at Splash Inn. It's not fancy but has good reviews for divers.

We do Kids Sea Camp for family dive travel. They generally stay at The Mayan Princess and Turquoise Bay on the West End. We haven't tripped with them to Roatan, but both places have raving reviews. If it was just me and the rib, I'd like Banarama on the West End. But Coco View would probably be more our style.

When we take the C-Monster, we will trip with KSC.

I was looking into Banarama but it's pretty isolated (10 minute drive) from other shopping/restaurants. I wanted the ability to walk to different restaurants for dinner/etc.

I stayed at Fantasy Island, and wished I was at Coco View the entire time I was there! lol.

I went to West End one day, but I cannot remember how far away the resorts I mentioned are from it. Coco View is a good bit away.

Because we dive all day, we stay in more isolated areas these days.

$5 water taxi between West End and West Bay, so super easy to go back and forth no matter which side you stay on.
