#2 son is a junior in HS and looking at Clemson (among A&M and many others). We visited with #1 son a few years ago but it was a very quick in and out of town. Did the campus tour then pretty much boogied out of town.

This time we're planning to spending a night and check out the town a bit more. Anyone have rec's on restaurants, must see / must do's (outside of campus), etc?

Downtown Greenville SC is a great little town to tour, really well designed and well done. Lower Whitewater Falls is a nice place to visit for a bit, very scenic.

Son graduated Clemson in May '24 on the 5 year plan. My wife and I loved the trips there so much we are considering Lake Keowee for retirement.

The town of Clemson is SMALL. VERY SMALL. Downtown (College Ave) is where you should concentrate your meals and shopping. Shepherd Hotel is a very nice hotel on College that your wife will love. It is also a training program and employment center for those with Down's Syndrome which is pretty cool.

We usually stayed at the Courtyard in Clemson but have also stayed at the Fairfield in Seneca which was nice but 10/12 minutes from campus.

For food downtown it runs the gamut - Evolve Kitchen is really good sit down for a college town. TD's is best for college food like wings and sandwiches. Best downtown college pizza is Todaro's. Charleston's pub is a SC chain and just okay. Burgers at Loose Change are pretty good and when you graduate, you staple a dollar bill to the wall/ceiling with your name, class and whatever else you want to say. Wallpaper'd with dollar bills.

I'd say Calhoun Corners is the best restaurant in town. Reservations required. Locals say Frank Erwin's, which is very very good, but it's a steak house and steak houses outside Texas just don't do a whole lot for me.

What to do? Baseball is big there and the team is ranked top 10. Stadium is great but smaller. If your kiddo is outdoorsy, visit the Snow Family Outdoors center across the lake but still on campus. There are lots of waterfall hikes in the area if that's your jam. Cashiers and Highlands are great mountain towns an houror so away. Beautiful drive but it will be shoulder season so there may not be as many stores or restaurants open. Check before driving that way.

Tiger Town Tavern (triple T's) is their version of The Chicken. If you've been to the Chicken then TTT's will look, feel and smell very familiar. Best upscale adult bar is Shepherd hotel rooftop. Nick's Tavern is a cool, small pub that's mostly professors and grad students.

MH Frank's is an old school men's clothier downtown with fantastic customer service and high quality clothes and shoes. Owner (or GM not sure which) actually saw my Aggie ring and told me he went to A&M Galveston for a year. Super talkative guy.

Tell your kiddo NOT to read the plaque on Thomas Green Clemson's statue. Tradition is to wait until graduation day to read it otherwise you never graduate. Mine skimmed it during our visit and he claims it's why it took 5 years to graduate. Also not supposed to tour John C Calhoun's home (It's on campus). He stayed outside while the rest of the family went through it and it's worth the time to walk through.

Downtown Greenville is a great place to spend a weekend in the Spring. Walkable, great shopping (hit the Mast Store), food's pretty good and all the restaurants have outdoor seating.

We and my son loved Clemson. We have a senior at A&M and the quality of student/customer service, advising and support is night and day. From a parents perspective it was wonderful. Plus it's a great area to visit.

Fell free to DM me if you have any questions.

AMAZING info. Thanks very much! I may DM if / when #2 son gets accepted. He's 100% sure to apply.

We're currently booked at The Abernathy but when we toured a few years ago we hit Andee's ice cream which looks like its right next to The Shepherd Hotel.

Sis-in-law lived in Greenville SC for several years and actually went to Clemson for grad school. We visited Greenville twice while they were there and really loved it too. And that was probably 10 years ago.

Baseball fan? Shoeless Joe Jackson museum is downtown. Ty Cobb museum is an hour away.

I can't speak to the town of Clemson but we did live and work near Greenville for over 8 years before moving to Round Rock. In fact I just accepted my old job back on a remote basis and am looking forward to getting to visit Greenville a few times a year. About 20 years ago Greenville had the bright idea to tear down the old Camperdown road bridge over Reedy falls and replace it with a pedestrian bridge. The transformation that has happened to that downtown since then has been extraordinary.

Visited Clemson today and really glad we did. We got the campus tour then a business school tour and both were very well done and very informative. We rolled in Thursday in time to walk around downtown and drive around a bit before quick dinner at Evolve (son got wings that tasted like they were smoked. Really good) then hitting the Clemson / Louisville baseball game which the good guys won. Great atmosphere at the baseball game if a little too much piped in music for my "old guy at a baseball game" taste.

Town really is tiny but spending more time there this trip than with #1 son (day trip) was really nice to get more feel for the area. We had a pretty amazing breakfast at SunnySide Cafe about 10 minutes east (I think east) of Campus. The tours were great as was the weather. Definitely chamber of commerce weather this weekend. Some really interesting parallels with A&M including being a land grant college, starting as all male military and a huge emphasis on their senior ring. Tour guide talked a lot about learning about service to others and putting others ahead of yourself. Very impressive and I think also a parallel to our beloved A&M. I could easily see my son a Tiger and would wholeheartedly support that decision.

Curious if your son would say there's other hang out areas besides "downtown" and also his experience with getting football tickets. If he went to the games. Sounds like football tix are tougher to get than at A&M especially freshman year.

Glad you had a great time. The weather is outstanding compared to here in Texas. Being from Houston my son got a kick out of all the complaining about the "unbearable" heat when the temps hit 94.

As far as things to do outside of downtown - I assume you're talking about weekend partys and going out. Downtown bars/clubs are all 21 and up after a certain time except for Itsyourweiner. Yes, you read the name correctly. It's mostly apartment parties/get togethers or greek events. Daily activities revolve around sports and Lake Hartwell.

Sororities are huge there and my son went to a lot of their events. Frats are much much smaller than we expected. They had 2 deaths in the early 2000's and the second death (Tucker Hipps) caused the University and State to completely blow up the fraternity system. Involvement cratered. My son did say that as time passes the frats are getting a little larger every year. In my opinion the changes they made should be adopted by most schools and you would see a large drop off in greek troubles. My boy was not in a frat and he never felt like it negatively impacted him.

Football is HUGE. Free student tickets are lottery. Freshman that want to go "usually" get tickets. But big games are a crapshoot. We wanted to make sure he could go to all the games so we bought the student season ticket package. It was like $225 or $250 and he had a guaranteed ticket to every game.

You are right about the feel of campus. Very Aggie-like. And South Carolinians are extremly friendly people.

One last thing, like most schools they are building Taj Mahal dorms now. My son lived freshman year in the "Shoeboxes". They were like a cross between baclony and corps style at A&M. Small room, cinder block bomb shelter architecture, community bath and rowdy. My son loved it. Met tons of people and had a real sense of community. If Clemson happens for your son, don't write off the Shoeboxes!

Forgot to add. The business school is on a path to be very highly rated, very soon. My son was challenged and supported there. Also, if your son has some interest in science then have him check out the Packaging Science major. Literally physical product packaging and marketing. My son had several friends in the major and all graduated and took jobs paying $80 - $100k
