If you're coming to to Tulum this summer, please be careful. They violent crime has become a daily occurance inside and outside the tourist zone. Friday there was a shootout directly in front of our house where the head of the police forc was murdered by 9 sicarios. It was a SHOOTOUT. We counted at least 50 rounds and that wasn't hard.

A Canadian woman was kidnapped, raped, and left in the jungle for dead by a taxi driver the next night.

Things are getting dicey here to say the least.

Might be time to reconsider the area honestly.

Has it spread to Playa del Carmen? I'm taking a trip to Cozumel next month and was thinking of a day trip to Playa to dive a cenote. But not if I'm going to die or get raped.

Border lockdown has disrupted the coyote / immigrant / fentanyl business which was a major source of income in recent years. When things get disrupted trouble usually follows until a new order of things can be established. Expect to hear more of these types of violent actions for a while.

It started in Cancn, moved to Playa, now is hitting Tulum. PDC is worse than here.

Yeah literally across the street. We live at 7th and 11th and this was at 5th and 11th. There's no 6 it goes 5 to 7 and 7 is currently closed so all traffic has to funnel to 5 so it was as close as possible. Luckily we open away from the street where the shooting occured.

Normally, they keep the violence in check along the RM especially the beach roads and tourist main fairs because it's bad for both business and tourism so both sides lose money.

Over the last 6-12 months the amount of violence in those areas feels like it's probably doubled or tripled. There are alot of rumors going around about this shooting in particular.

Supposedly the CNJG have been trying to make a move into QR and those 98 arrests were how they were keeping CNJG out so that's probs who ordered the hit. The question going around now is was he working w the Sinaloa to keep CNJG out or was he just doing a good job and that's Why They wanted him out.

This isn't a "slam dunk" attempt or a "gotcha" moment…

Were you the one that told everyone that cities in Mexico were as safe as any big town in the US? Or was that another poster that lived down there? Tried to go through your post history to avoid asking this question but you post a lot lol.

Has it just gotten that bad, that fast? Is Mexico still a destination spot for summers or should I be redirecting the wife when she tries to get a trip down there?

The increase in violence since the mexicsn election has been telling. It doesn't bother us but something to be aware of.

Stay on the islands (Cozumel or Isla Mujeres) of Mexico. The crime doesn't come out there as the islands are easily monitored to ensure the tourism industry remains intact.

What are you talking about? It's just as bad there. I can post articles. Thats 100% not true at all. In fact Cozumel is far less safe than PDC. FAR LESS SAFE.

Our mexico approach is this:

1) Go to the resort
2) Stay at the resort
3) if you think #2 won't be satisfactory, stay at a nicer resort
4) if you think you'll get bored, plan a shorter trip or don't go to Mexico

Update from yesterday shooting - 4 dead, 8 injured. 2 tourists killed and several others wounded. Shooting was on Tulum Beach Road.

That article is confusing. Headline and first line say isla mujeres but the rest of it says costa mujeres and says this all occurred on the mainland.

I read an article about this elsewhere, and I believe it happened at the RIU Palace Costa Mujeres. It's interesting that the article is vague about that detail.

Confusing because isla mujeres is also part of the mainland. So it happened at hotel costa Mujeres in the municipality of isla mujeres in QR (on mainland side)

What I have been told, is that it was cartel related and not towards guests. Still, not good at all that it happened on a resort. It's blowing up the travel agent sites.
