With four kids. We're planning on splitting the time between Chiang Mai and Koh Samui. Any thoughts?

FWIW, this would be after a week in Tokyo/Kyoto.

We did this trip in reverse order about 15 years ago, Bangkok, Koh Samui, Chiang Mai, and then 3 days in Tokyo on the way back.

We were dirt poor grad students on our honeymoon, so we stayed in very basic accommodations and were on a budget.

But some of the stuff that we loved:
Scuba diving with whale sharks off of Koh Tao
Just wandered Koh Samui, saw the mummified monk. Koh Samui had a lot of Russian tourists, sort of like their Cancun. Not as party as ****et.

In Chiang Mai, we went to a culinary school for a day where we shopped in the markets and then cooked a few meals. That was an incredible experience.

The best meal I think I've ever had was at a little alley restaurant/cart. Two meals and two sodas and she held up 6 fingers. I thought she meant 600 baht and she was surprised and gave 540 back, 60 baht for lunch, $2.

We were going to go the elephant sanctuary Patara elephant sanctuary, but had to cancel that and ended up taking a hot air balloon which was a lifetime memory.

I don't remember much specifically about where we ate, etc. But we had an incredible time.

Edit. In Tokyo a couple really memorable things were: we went to the sumo championship which was really damned cool and we waited in line crazy early in the morning to have omakase sushi breakfast at Sushi Dai in the Tsukiji fish market. We did it in January and it was like 18 degrees. Probably a lot more fun to wait three hours at 3am in the summer. Absolutely bucket list experience.

My wife and I took a trip to Thailand in November 2024.

In Chiang Mai, we did a cooking Airbnb experience that was awesome (https://www.airbnb.com/experiences/731172?viralityEntryPoint=2&s=76).

We also did an all day private elephant sanctuary excursion with Chai Lai Orchid (https://chailaiorchid.com/elephant-jungle-expedition/).

Highly recommend both!

Thank you both. Do you agree Chaing Mai over Bangkok is a good choice?

Yes - I agree with that. We enjoyed our time in Bangkok, but liked Chiang Mai more.

My daughter, class of 23, did her study abroad in CM. She is now in eastern Thailand serving in the peace corps. She absolutely adores CM. Fly into Bangkok to see the tourist stuff, then head to CM.
Thailand is super cheap and extremely hot and humid- drench your clothes humid. The kings mother died this past year so they are in a year of mourning. The Thai people will be in black but you don't have to be.
You HAVE to wear long skirts to go into the temples but you can dress like an American every where. Bangkok is a normal city.
I don't like Thai food but mango sticky rice!
Some pics from CM and maybe a Bangkok temple

Talked to my daughter for a few minutes about it.... 7 days with those two cities that are very far apart and 4 kids in the extreme heat- you will be busy!
There will be a lot of traveling

CM- extremely hot
Elephant sanctuary, doi inthanon, doi suthep
Very outdoorsy
If you don't want to travel around
Old town, weekend night market, zoo

CM university- might see some aggie students there

KS
Where they filmed the White Lotus
The beach
Snorkeling, fire show
Not much

I hope you enjoy your trip- make those memories!

Very helpful, thank you! And really cool for your daughter!

Is Thailand in June worse than college station in June?

Depends where you are in Thailand. Up in Chiang Mai it'll be a bit cooler than in Bangkok, but any of the islands are going to be quite balmy.

Going in June, Rain will be short lived. Maybe bring a poncho in your day bags.

We have a house in Samui, plan on semi retiring there. With a family, I would look at getting a house with a pool but there are a lot of great hotel options. I would either be on the beach or have a private pool if you can swing it. Chaweng is the busiest part of Samui, Lamai is a more chill vibe. With a family, I would shoot for somewhere in Fishermans Village/Maenam area. The holiday Inn at BoPhut beach is a great spot if you go with a hotel, but I would really look hard at the vrbo options with a private pool.

Do the pig island day tour to snorkel, the mainland Samui doesnt really have any good spots outside of silver beach/coral cove, IMO.

Lamai Cooking School is a good one. Um is a friend of mine.

I cannot stress the importance of doing this exact tour though:

https://www.getyourguide.com/en-gb/ko-samui-l898/koh-samui-ang-thong-park-s-semi-private-yacht-adventure-t143955/?ranking_uuid=56578ee3-159f-4c4b-a347-42de4be5c5ae

This company is the absolute best in seeing Ang Thong National Marine Park. HIGHLY recommend it and book early. All the other tours are rushed and cram you on the boat like sardines in a can. The one I linked is very relaxing and will probably be the highlight of your trip, minus an elephant experience. Tell Monkey Man hello, he is the head guide on the boat.

Go watch a sunset on Lipa Noi beach.

Favorite places of ours to eat/drink/hang out: Cape Away Beach Bar; Lay Lagom Beach Bar; I-Talay Taling Ngam(for sunsets); babu's Indian Restaurant; Marzano Pizza; Green Leaf

CM is better for elephant sanctuaries, IMO. Go see the beaches and sights on Samui with a private van and driver.

Bangkok is a love or hate city. I love it. I dont get the hate, especially how modern it has become in the 25 years I have been going. Due to you only having 7 days, I would try to fly in from Tokyo and fly to CM or Samui that day with no night over. You will be glad you did it. if you do choose a day in BKK, then do a cooking class or hit Jodds Fair night market.

I live in Bangkok. Personally, I like it more than Chiang Mai. You never run out of things to do, the public transportation is widespread and efficient, and its the best city in the world for food. Since you are already going to an island to chill, I would consider countering that with Bangkok...but that's just me. Chiang Mai is also wonderful, so you can't really go wrong.
