Wife and I are spending five days in the El Paso (just flying in, not staying long), White Sands, Carlsbad, and Santa Fe area next month.

Anyone have any recommendations on sights, restaurants, and bars?

Thank you in advance.

Think long and hard about going to Santa Fe. Do you really want to add a 10-hour round trip into the middle of your stay? And the drive is through some of Newer Mexico's least interesting scenery.

My standard advice is to visit Northern New Mexico, or Southern New Mexico, but not both in one trip.

Carlsbad and White Sands are good choices, still a lot of driving. Look into the Sitting Bull Falls area near Carlsbad.

There is a missile museum on the west side of White Sands, it was closed for COVID, but I think it's back up

Interesting little Space Museum in Alamogordo.

Ruidoso and Cloudcroft are popular winter spots. Pretty drive up the mountain to Cloudcroft from Alamogordo. If you head that way, go to Lincoln for the Billy the Kid sites, and to Fort Stanton.

If you do drive up I-25, Fort Craig is an interesting diversion, little known Civil War battle nearby. Very Large Array is west of Socorro, but it is best combined with the Trinity Site Open House in October.

Bosque Del Apache wildlife refuge is a hot spot for bird watchers. Thousands of Sandhill Cranes this time of year.

I would agree w/CanyonAg3458's advice. I know I would not want to spend that much time in the car when you only have five days. Personally, I would save the northern half of NM for another trip. Fly into Albuquerque and see the Old Town area, and the very interesting National Museum of Nuclear Science (or something like that), and then on to Santa Fe and perhaps even Taos/Taos Pueblo. The Cumbres & Toltec Railroad in Chama is great as well, and Los Alamos is well worth a half-day.

If you are interested in the missile museum noted above, it is now open. But as it is located on an US Army installation, you really need to visit the museum's website and find out about entry requirements before you go. Also, if you do go there and need a meal before you head off to somewhere else, the bowling alley has a pretty decent food counter. It is located within walking distance of the museum. The only other place to get something to eat is the BX, but you cannot use this facility unless you have a military ID/CAC.

Thanks for the recs. Will definitely check out a few.

We are doing it one way, into EP, out of SF. We are a good car couple. A few hours per day is no big deal for us. We look forward to the scenery, it may not be the best ever, but living in northeast PA, we've been looking at snow for 2 months straight!

Thanks!

Okay, that puts a different spin on it. El Paso and the first few miles north, I don't have much to add.

Las Cruces supposedly has a Farm Museum that it very good. Continuing north on I-25, you pass Hatch, famous for chiles, but I don't know if anything happens this time of year.

North of Truth or Consequences (named after a TV game show) you can divert to Fort Craig. Not a lot to see, but one of the few Civil War sites this far west. Check if they are open, I think I saw that they were closing for a little while.

Bosque Del Apache is, as I said, popular with bird watchers. Sandhill crane and possibly whooping cranes should be there this time of year, I think. Again, check the web site.

San Antonio, New Mexico, plan to stop at the Owl Cafe for the original green chile cheeseburger. It was a hangout of the Manhattan Project workers and later astronauts and test pilots. The town is where HIlton Hotels began.

Far west of Socorro is the Very Large Array. Fascinating place and amazing science there, but it is a long diversion, and you need to check to make sure it is open.

Lots of places to eat in Albuquerque, Church Street Cafe is special, and it is in Old Town. We also love El Pinto, in the far NW corner of town. The Biopark/Zoo is very good. If you are into nuclear history at all, the National Nuclear Museum is a must see. The tram up to Sandia Crest is fun, but you can also drive up the backside of the Crest via Tijeras and get the same view for free.

From ABQ to Santa Fe, you can take the longer and more Scenic Turquoise Trail. Takes you through Madrid, where "wild Hogs" was filmed. If you take I-25, consider Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument

Santa Fe must eat: Clafloutis French Bakery and Restaurant, and Gabriels, north of town on 285. At the latter, have guacamole made at your table.

You could easily spend all five days in the Santa Fe area. Los Alamos is full of Manhattan Project history and museums, and you need to take both highway 4 and 502 on your way in and out. Have morning coffee at the Smith's grocery, with the most spectacular patio of any grocery store ever.

West of Los Alamos is Valles Caldera, the prettiest place in northern NM. And you can keep going to Jemez Springs and the Gilman tunnels. Bandelier Monument is worth a visit. Consider Rancho de Chimayo for dinner. The Chapel at Chimayo is pretty famous.

Will talk about an eastern route to Santa Fe later.

I feel like CanyonAg and I participated in a very similar thread to this one.

I'll add a few things.

L & J Cafe in El Paso.
Hueco Tanks is a tremendous state park.
If you drive from El Paso to Carlsbad, you'll also clip Guadalupe Mountains NP - Texas other NP.

I like Carniceria San Juan de Los Lagos in Carlsbad.

If you're coming up through Cruces, Mesilla is worth a gander. Double Eagle is a pretty good dinner spot.

Cloudcroft is a nice stop that you'll probably hit going between White Sands and Carlsbad. Mad Jacks is good Texas BBQ.

Check out the Pistachio farms north of Alamogordo, it's a unique site. Casa de Suenos is my favorite restaurant in the area.

If you go through San Antonio, you've got the Green Chile Cheeseburger war between The Owl and Manny's Buckhorn. I think I like Manny's a touch more, but I like the vibe at the owl.

I LOVE Cocina Azul in ABQ for New Mexican - Carne Adovada Enchiladas - Christmas w/ a sopapilla.
Campo at Los Poblanos is a great dinner spot.

Tons of good breweries in town - La Cumbre, Gravity Bound, Bow & Arrow (among others).

The Copper Lounge is a fun spot.

The National Museum of Nuclear Science is terrific.

Good hiking and views at the Sandia Crest. You can hike up, drive up, or ride the tram up.

Near Santa Fe, you have Tent Rocks, Bandelier.

Lots of good food in Santa Fe. I'll find that recent thread.

The original Meow Wolf is still great. Liquid Light Glass is fun for glass blowing demonstrations.

Canyon Road of course, but there are plenty of galleries near the plaza. I also like the Cathedral, and you've got to check out Loretto Chapel at least once. It's just nice walking around the plaza area.

Thank you everyone.

You mentioned a french bakery Canyon, that is speaking my wife's love language, her hobby is french baking, so that will be a must. Good beer is one of my strong interests, so some good recs from CDub.

It's awesome . But, a bit isolated. Best experienced as a day trip from Las Cruces or stopping by if you are going to Silver City.

If that's the case, in Santa Fe:
Rowley for good food and good wild ales.
Keeping Together is a brand new taproom and they're doing some really great stuff

ABQ:
Gravity Bound for the best beers in ABQ - especially their hazys.
La Cumbre for everything, especially IPAs
Bow & Arrow for sours, IPAs, and stouts
Flock of Moons for traditional stuff
Lasso for Lagers
Ex Novo downtown for good food and a good variety of beers.

For breweries further south:

Las Cruces: Ice Box (multiple locations, can't go wrong with any of them)
Alamogordo: 575 (decent but not great beer, great patio if the weather is nice)
Cloudcroft: Cloudcroft Brewing (great pizza - recommend the Zia Pie)
Ruidoso: Downshift (2 locations - Riverside is much better)

FYI - the Georgia O'Keefe museum is being rebuilt so is not open, if you care about that.

La Fonda as well.

The new Georgia O Keefe museum is being built on another lot. You can still visit the current museum galleries. I was at the museum last month.

It was closed when we went by it yesterday. Might just be due to off peak season? Don't know.

We've been before so not a huge loss for us. We were just going in to look at it again because of the show Pluribus. Ha.

Weird. Their website doesn't indicate any closures and even shows events scheduled yesterday.

The new museum is going to be big. They've been moving dirt around for a while at the new site.

I think we are crazy then. We also got in yesterday and were wiped out from traveling and probably dreamed this up.
