Not sure if any of you are going to PVR anytime soon, but cars are being set on fire and there is civil unrest there. Airport is closed and flights are being canceled.

While I have no official source on this, my guess is it is in relation to the below.

As of February 22, 2026, reports indicate that
Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, better known as "El Mencho" and leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was killed by the Mexican Armed Forces. These reports follow previous, unconfirmed rumors of his death in 2022.

  • Name: Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes ("El Mencho")
  • Role: Leader of the CJNG
  • Status: Reported killed by Mexican Armed Forces on Feb 22, 2026.
Prior to this, he was one of the most wanted individuals by both Mexican and U.S. authorities

Welp, the Tequila trip I committed to next month will have one less participant. Screw that noise. This was going to be my first trip to Mexico in almost 20 years and this just ensured I'll never go again.

I feel so bad for a fellow agent. She had an entire wedding group on a plane that landed in PVR. They never were allowed to get off and are now headed back to Milwaukee.

I would also like to give some geographic perspective as I have clients not going to PVR worried about Cancun and Riviera Maya. Geographically Cancun to PVR is the same distance from Dallas to NYC in US geography. Or a 30+ hour car drive. Also this is a small testament of why you need travel protection in all international travel.

Jana I feel for your friends wedding group as I know so much was put into the destination wedding on all fronts.

Must be fake news. I've been told here multiple times that Mexico isn't a ****hole and that resort towns are safer than any other US beach town

I would still take Mexico over some cities in the US.

It's just a little "civil unrest."

Curious how Cabo San Lucas will react. It's on the increased caution list.

Maybe south Chicago, East St. Louis, or Gary, Indiana.

Our driver there last week was telling us how the cartel keeps crime to a "minimum" and always outside the tourist zones. Guess we'll see how long that lasts.

Which are places none of us would ever go to anyway.

I have worked in the criminal realm too long, and some dealing with cartels. Also had a friend kidnapped in Mexico around 2006. He was released after about 10 days with nothing on but his underware and told not to turn around or he would be shot. Took him about 2 days to reach Matamoros area. Really screwed him up mentally.

We loved going to Mexico and I grew up going to border towns. But Mexico is on our "no go" list now. Regretably.

Exactly.

Which reminds me....we have a family friend, who while in Mexico, was kidnapped by Mexican authorities (not even overtly cartel) and was ransomed in order for him to come back to the US. He was originally from Mexico and was visiting his mother who still lived there. He had to have his wife send money to the local authorities and pay them off so he could get out of jail and get back home. This was back in the 90s.

Well, that kind of sucks. I'm supposed to be there over the weekend with the wife. Guess we'll see how that goes. It's the drive from Cancun Airport to Cancun that I guess would worry me. Not worried about the resort itself....well, that and I guess being able to GTFO.

What was ironic about my friend, he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was hunting on a ranch and the cartel was mad at the rancher so they kidnapped the rancher's son and the guy hunting with him--my friend.

They let my friend go after 10 days because it was the rancher's son they wanted. But the cartel did not know what they had. My friend was worth a reported $40M!!

There is an agent who lives in Playa and lots of agents right now. They are saying all is normal but beefed up security. This is in a group with over 29k agents in there. Below is her update.

Monday morning update-there is no update. All is calm here in the Mexican Caribbean, no overnight news, and praying it remains that way! The only small update is a slight cold front that has come in today. It's not as cool as the one last month, so it will still be a lovely week!

I understand that the US gov has lumped Quintana Roo in on their warning to "shelter in place". The Canadian government has not included QRoo.

The Cancun Sun has some great wording specifically talking about this area, I will share with you on the situation. Totally up to you what/how you share with clients, and how you phrase it. Please be VERY careful with what you say to your clients, never promise safety and talk to your travel lawyer if you have any questions before sending an email. I am not responsible for the information/wording I am providing, should you share it with anyone. Feel free to share in the comments what you are saying to your clients.

"Because the retaliatory blockades spread to multiple states on Sunday, the Embassy issued a massive, blanket security alert out of an extreme abundance of caution.

This alert explicitly directed U.S. government staff in Quintana Roo (Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen) to shelter in place and work remotely for Monday, February 23

This was a sweeping diplomatic precaution, not a reaction to active threats in the Hotel Zone. Embassies cast wide nets during national security events to limit their liability. Furthermore, embassies are notoriously terrible at issuing an "all clear." They will trigger a shelter-in-place order instantly, but they rarely follow up to explicitly tell tourists the threat has passed, leaving travelers in a state of lingering, unnecessary panic."

I mean… the pictures above show you it's not business as usual. 5pm deadline today for govt to meet CJNG demands or round 2 starts. This is just the beginning.

It's best to leave your personal safety to some random hobbyist travel agent on FB.

The highway to PDC is open no issues. Not worried about today. It's tonight after 5 where things might blow back up.

We love it here but giving it a week or two to cool off isn't the worst idea.

Last night was insane here.

Did I say it was safe? No, I didn't and that's not words you're ever gonna hear come out of my mouth. Would I still travel there? Yes.

And the person that I am speaking of has lived there full-time for a very long time. She's not some random hobby travel agent. And she's technically not even a travel agent anymore, or does very little.

While I have not done any research because honestly it's more than I care to look into, I've been told some of those above photos are AI generated. But I'm not gonna get into it cause I don't really care one way or the other if they are/aren't. My job is to provide support and answer questions to my clients.

I've vacationed in Rivera Maya areas and Cabo over the years as it's a quick getaway. We stay on resort and don't leave but always heard that the resorts are not messed with as the cartels own them and launder the money thru them. Not sure if it's true but some of the security around the resorts sure seem shady.

Last trip to Quinta Roo, armed security walked the resort's beach by every 15 minutes or so with an AR15. I think it was supposed to make us feel better, but the knowledge that he'd be immediately outgunned in a threat had the opposite effect for me.
