It sounds like you were strategic in your travel. Traveling at certain times to select locations.

There are plenty of Mexicans here in the US that don't go back to visit their family because of the dangers in certain Mexican states. Many Mexicans won't bring their vehicles across the border because the risk of being stolen.

I, too, have traveled to Mexico several times over the past couple of years. I flew to specific tourist destinations. Saying Mexico is just as safe as traveling in the US has your head in the sand. Just because lots of Americans travel to and from select locations doesn't mean the country is just as safe as a road trip across the US.

Why does the US issue no travel warnings to dozens of Mexican cities?

The Don't usually issue city alerts. They issue specific state alerts. Just a FYI. I Don't think I've ever seen a City specific alert in the years weve lived Here.

That's true they issue state alerts except there is one for Mexico City.

Within the state alerts, they do discuss certain cities and travel restrictions. For instance, in the State of Baja California they say there is no travel restriction for Tijuana.

Tijuana is one thing. Now do that in McAllen in a new car and see how that goes.

We were planning a trip to PV in August and in discussing what we want to do I've come up with the best way to explain for me.

I don't think it's unreasonable to stick to the plan and go visit but I also think it's completely reasonable to pass and go elsewhere.

Has anything occurred recently in Mexico that could change your safety and security if you were to make the same trip again soon?

I would probably wait a couple of weeks until the unrest has settled down, but then I'd be fine with going again. No different than temporarily avoiding a US city that is in the midst of large scale protests.

Traveling at certain times to select locations is pretty much how all travel works.

I respectfully disagree with the comparison. Protests in a general city in the US seem different than potentially being caught up in cartel violence in a different country. I feel stronger on my 2 feet as a citizen here than I would as a non-citizen elsewhere. Maybe if I spoke Spanish I would feel different about PV/Mexico in this instance because I could feel comfortable getting around with less help. I feel like for most of us seeing or navigating a large protest in the US is way less of a stretch than navigating a foreign place if something turns south.

Edit to add: I'm mainly referring to PV in this instance…less so the more geographically separate places in the country.

I respect that different people can see risk differently. I never had any trouble getting around in Mexico without knowing Spanish. Both within 100 miles south of the border or in Mexico City.

The cartel wars have been going on for 20 years, and to a lesser extent for many more decades before that. For me, the risk of getting involved in that violence was low enough to not be a serious concern.

I should have been more specific about the kinds of US protests I was referring to. I was thinking of ones that similarly involved violence, fires, deaths and clashes with police. Like the 1992 LA riots, the 2020ish BLM riots in Minnesota and DC, and the Jan 6 Capitol riot. I would have chosen to cancel plans to visit those areas at those times, but would be fine rescheduling as soon as they died down.

Understood, I thought you meant just a random protest in general and that you were not referring to something like the LA riots.
