I'm moving to DC next month and taking a U-Haul with all my stuff. Last time I went we drove through Tennessee, but with the rolling hills and mountains, I was thinking this may not be the the best route. Anyone have any experience with this drive? Thanks.

Where's your starting point? Texas is kinda a big place.

We moved from Dallas to Louisville, Louisville to Raleigh, and then Raleigh back to Dallas, so I'm familiar with a number of the common routes headed east.

The route you reference is coming thru TN on I-40. If you are coming from Dallas, a lot of folks like that route, but there are the hills.

You can come I-20 to I-59 to Chattanooga and then 75 to I-81. There are hills on 59 and on 75, but I don't beleive they are as bad. You still have to go thru Knoxville and up 81 which still has hills, etc.

I go home to San Angelo from near Chattanooga via car at least once a year and we always do the southern route.

Probably a toss up....

You can also go north through St Louis to Indy to Columbus or south on 20 to Atlanta...lots of options out there.

If time is not an issue, you can take the route to Atlanta and then go up through the Carolinas to Richmond, etc. It will take a lot longer and honestly the terrain makes for some boring driving. I have driven the route via I-30(TX&ARK) to I-40(TN) to I-81(VA) to I-66(VA,DC) several times and I always found it to be the best way. It can be tiresome in the mountains if you are driving a moving truck or pulling a trailer, however.

with a u-haul, i'd personally avoid going through tennessee and the mountains of va. if you really want scenic beauty, you should go that route, but if you want an easier drive in a big uhaul or uhaul trailer, drvie I-20 to atlanta, pick up 85 to richmond and then on up.

I would take the mountain driving over driving thru the hell hole that is ATL traffic any day.

I drove through Hot-lanta to Charlotte to stay with my wife's uncle/aunt. Then drove to DC.

i did this exact drive back in 04 when i moved to dc. (luckily movers brought us back).

the hills arent that big of an issue. and you only deal with them on the second day of driving. if you have a v8 in your truck you should be all set.
