I'm going to graduate law school in a year and a half and I need to start deciding what city I want to move to when I'm done. Any suggestions? I want to get out of the midwest. Somewhere with a decent legal job market would be nice too. I'm a single gal, so I don't really have anything holding me to any specific place.

Depends on the type of law you want to practice.

Right now I'll work in any type of law that I can get a job doing.

aggiespartan...

not necessarily related to your line of work, but... why don't you just research some places you're interested in (cost of living, what the job market looks like, etc.), try to narrow it down to 2-3 options, then go for a couple of weekend trips to those places....that's the best way to find out about a city and if you think you would enjoy living there.

my wife and i got tired of living in houston a few years ago...did what i described...and ended up moving to denver 2-1/2 years ago, and couldn't be happier!

some people get taken wherever their jobs take them, but we are lucky enough to be in a field that you can pretty much go where you want (architecture and interior design), which is great if you can do the same and really choose where you end up.

and when you do get some ideas of where you might like to live, come back and post your thoughts/questions, and i'm sure there are aggies just about everywhere that can help you figure it out.

I don't have the funds to visit every where I would like. And I also don't think visiting for a weekend gives you the same idea as talking to people that live in the places. The job market sucks everywhere as far as I can tell. Plus the fact that I will have to stay where ever I go for at least 5 years kind of makes the decision a little tougher.

Do you like beaches, mountains, etc? Do you prefer metropolitan or mid-sized cities?

I think my job opportunities would be better in large cities.

Sister just moved to Seattle, if you don't mind the cold it's a pretty cool place. I'm more of a Htown man myself...

I do really love Houston but I'm kind of a nomad. If I have the chance to move somewhere new, I'm going to move somewhere new. Seattle winter is mild compared to Michigan.

Please tell everybody Seattle sucks and not to move here (rains 9 mo/yr, liberals, bad food, high cost of living, etc., etc.).

Bar exam should play a role in your choice...reciprocity, etc...

You get in in one state and you can likely get licensed in other states after 5 years of practice.

Obviously NY, Cal, and TX bars will be more difficult than other states.

Best of luck to you! Just took that POS myself, glad it's over.

Did you see The Firm?

that should be enough of a selling point to come to Memphis.

Denver is nice, and 99% of the Ags that move up here LOVE it!

Winter is not NEARLY as bad as you might think... usually just a handful of snow events(4-6" usually) that impact you... and even those, only for a day or so while the plows catch up. There is the rare snowstorm(12+", but they're rare, maybe one every other year.

Dry, mild summers in the 80's, low 90's...More outdoor sports than you can imagine (because the weather is so nice), even right here in Denver.

Did I mention that you're also 2 hours from about 5 different world class ski/mountain resorts?

I think it's the sheet.

The Washington-Arlington-Alexandria area is chock full of legal jobs and currently has only a 4.7% unemployment rate, 2nd best in the country among large cities. Winters are mild compared to the Midwest and New England. Plenty of nice places to live in Alexandria (VA), Arlington Co (VA), Fairfax Co (VA), and Montgomery Co (MD) and also in some gentrifying places in DC. My single friends tell me there's a good nightlife/singles scene. Downside: Cost of Living is higher when compared to other cities outside the northeast.

My wife (Class of '99) and I have lived in DC for 2 years and love it. She works as a paralegal and is going to law school in the District. We plan to be here for a few more years at least.
