buzzard,

I spend just about every weekend on the OR coast in the summer. I generally stay North of Newport though. If you want any info let me know.

itgoes211 - thanks man. I guess my main concern is should I bring a screen shelter. I can't stand sitting inside an RV all summer, but was not sure about flies and skeeters. It looks like the campground is about a mile off the beach, in the dunes. Google earth shows a lot of lakes along the dunes also.

Saw the average high temp is less than 70 degrees during the summer, but do they have days where it is warm, like in the 80s? Is there always a breeze off the Pacific, or do you see off shore winds often? I know I am going to love this summer regardless, but I am an engineer, and planning is second nature to me.

Engineer here as well.

I moved to SW Washington about 5 years ago, and started surfing that summer. I've probably spent about 20 nights outside within a quarter mile of the beach. i have never had an issue with bugs. keep in mind in OR that the closer you get to the coast the wetter it is going to be. Summers are typically dry for the most part with a few days of rain here and there. while I have never had an issue with misquitos and the like, I've always camped in a tent. There is almost always a breeze on the beach, but it's not always out of the west. a lot of times the wind will be out of the NW and some of the coves well block you from the wind for the most part.

Yes, you will get some warm days. Usually summer days start in the high fifties and end up in the low 70s for the high. I'd say about 10 days out of the summer you'll get temps up in the mid 80s. It's hilarious, northwesterners will make you think you're in SoCal when it gets warm. It will be 80 degress and people will be attempting to swim in 49 degree ocean water.

Enjoy your stay. I'm still taken away when I drive the pacific coast highway in the summer time. There's nothing quite like it. And here's a link I use for surf forecasts, but you might find it handy for your travels as well. http://magicseaweed.com/

P-wonk, that sounds like a great trip!! I moved to Salem 2 years ago and have a job that has me traveling the entire state....yes, even to Burns. I've always enjoyed my drives along 101 and now I'm looking forward to the next so I can stop in some of the places you mentioned!

Athens, I make quite a few trips to Bend and it would be great to meet up with some Ags!!

Lebetter, I will be making a trip out to Burns in February. I can let you know for sure when, if you'd like.

Buzzard, itgoes211 was spot on about the temperatures. The summertime is the best time on the Oregon Coast. Right outside of Reedsport on Hwy 38, there is an Elk sanctuary that typically has 40-60 head. Florence is a nice little town with some decent shopping near the Port of Siuslaw. If you go, you need to eat at Mo's (It's right across the street from the Port Office). They have a great clam chowder!!

As far as taking the ATVs out, you want to go to North Bend/Coos Bay (don't pass over the bridge though). When you see the bay, you want to take a right and head towards the State Park that is right there. If not that area Winchester Bay is okay. Newport would be another spot but that is quite a drive from Reedsport.

If there are any other Ags in Oregon, hit me up. Like I said, I am always traveling the state and would love to meet some Ags out here!!

Thanks Agwade. That is helpful info. If any of you are in the North Bend/Coos Bay area, stop by Horsfall campground. I will whip a batch of venison chili and have some Frito pies. We will be there from May 1, thru Sept. 30 hosting the campground. Like I said, I have a Kawasaki Prairie 400 ATV and you would be welcome to take it out on the dunes/beach.

I will be sure to check out Mo's. I love clam chowder.

P-wonk, thanks for starting the thread!

Athens, I will definitely give you a holler when I end up going to Bend! I usually keep my schedule three weeks ahead.

Buzzard, I was thinking that you were going to be at a different state park....you are already going to be at the dunes that I suggested going to. More than likely, I will be out that way sometime this summer. I'll let you know when I know for sure! Frito pies and venison chili sound fantastic! I did manage to find a good bbq joint in Salem, but the Mexican food out here SUCKS!!!

Also, I drove down to Brookings today and passed the Elk refuge. There were probably 50 or so out there.

Does Mo's have RV parking? I may have to make a stop there even before I go to the campground when I get there in April!

pwonk,

Cape Kiwanda (@ Pacific City) is my 2nd favorite OR surf spot. Pelican's get some mighty fine brews as well...and they're really proud of them.

buzzard,

the Mo's in Arch Cape should be able to accommodate an RV.
