Potential job opening with my company, myself I am not concerned, however my wife is a elementary school teacher and we have a 2 year old at home. We are non LDS, I have read conflicting reports about discrimination towards kids that are non LDS and would also worry of course with that carrying over into my wife getting hired at the public schools...should I worry?

I live in SLC now. I am single and don't have kids and I live downtown, so I can't help you much with questions on the school systems. I can tell you that this has turned out to be a great place to live if you enjoy the outdoors, and that I have not had any problems being non-LDS - it is majority non-LDS within the city. There are plenty of other people that moved here for work to make friends with.

We have a big Aggie game watching party tomorrow night, so I will gather some intel for you as best I can and report back!

I've lived here in SLC for almost 10 years now and love it! (I also have a toddler turning 2 y/o next week).

As Katy said, the majority of SLC is actually non-LDS, so there are really no issues with living in most of the neighborhoods here as far as feeling in the minority. I live in an area very close to downtown/U of Utah and it is actually quite liberal. It all depends on where you live.

I have loved living in SLC. It is a great quality of life, and paradise if you are into the outdoors (biking, hiking, skiing, etc.), also with great restaurants, a very active live music scene, Sundance film festival, and a vibrant summer filled with art festivals, beer festivals, etc.

sorry for the late reply - most of what I gathered from those with school age children is that it all depends on where you live - some areas will be fine, while some might have your kids feeling out of place. I get that the further you get from the city, the worse it gets, but can get specific areas for you to consider later if you decide to move. Sugarhouse, and Cottonwood Heights are good neighborhoods that aren't right downtown but I don't know about schools.

If you haven't finished your two week trip yet - there are definitely some good places to check out. The brew pubs are great (Squatters, Red Rock) for traveling alone bc you can just sit at the bar. The Bayou is a good place to eat with a great beer selection. The Red Iguana is actually pretty good Mexican. Go check out Sugarhouse and hit Fiddlers Elbow or Este Pizzeria. Piper down, The Beer Hive, and the Green Pig are some cool bars to hang out in. Gracie's is a nice gastropub, just stay away on Friday/Saturday nights - people think they are in a club or something...

I would say ski or snowboard if you get the chance, but even if you don't, at least drive up one of the Cottonwood Canyons (if the roads are clear) - you can even take the tram up at Snowbird just for a nice view. The Porcupine is another fun place to eat at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon.

If you have time, drive over to Park City just to check it out - there is a cute Main Street and some good food.

I know that was a lot of info - but I hope you have a good time while you are here! As someone who was dreading living in SLC, I can tell you that it really is a nice place, and we have a decent Aggie group here to watch games with and such.
