Not unless someone hires me to come over there. I'll probably be through there in the next week or so. My next known gig is a local ranch style bronc ride, where local ranch hands assemble and ride broncs and have a big loop horse roping (it's a complete northwest cowboy affair). It's a great event to watch cowboys pay to get themselves into great wrecks, and then sell them food!

We weren't impressed w/ Baldy's beef or sauce. His chicken was pretty good, though. Personally, I won't sell brisket if it starts to taste like his did when we ate there. My sauce is nothing special, but I make it myself and people here like it. I like Stubbs for my personal use.

I'll be in the Portland area (Hillsboro) this summer for an internship, although I'm still looking for somewhere to live.
Good to know there's some decent bbq I'm currently located in Seattle and am looking forward to marginally warmer weather in Portland!

I'll have to take a rain check until we get up there again. We're up there several times a year. You'll have to check out the Marrakesh Moroccan restaurant on 21st street. We always enjoy that place when we get up there if you're into ethnic food.

Hey Spartan!

Once you're settled in we should meet up for happy hour. My husband is a native Portlander and always enjoys an excuse to introduce people to some local brew pubs, so I'm sure I could convince him to come out as well!

I was wondering if there were any Portland Ags on texags and low and behold there is a whole thread! (sorry if I derail it)

I actually have a favor to ask of anyone in Portland with an extra bed/couch for an Aggie to use. My name is Kyle, I am class of 2008 and currently am a third year medical student at Baylor College of Medicine (in Houston). I have applied to Oregon Health & Science University to do a 4-week rotation at their hospital in Portland starting July 4th this year (these types of rotations are required to apply for an orthopedics residency, as I plan to do). The biggest problem is finding a place to stay, as my already tight student loans are not enough to cover all of my travel expenses. I will be working 90-100 hours/week and am really only looking for a place to sleep and shower (when they let me leave the hospital). I am more than willing to cover utilities for the month or chip in however I can (free surgeries at a later date? haha). If you would be willing to put me up for any amount of time, please send me a PM, email me (borque@bcm.edu), or just respond on here. I am more than willing to send you a resume, picture, anything (to prove I'm a pretty normal guy), so just let me know. Thanks guys.

So I found a place to stay and will be in Portland for the month of July! Would love to grab a beer with some ags if anyone has time. Also, does anyone have any suggestions for 4th of July activites, as my gf will be visiting me for the weekend, and we are looking for somehwhere fun to watch some fireworks.

I think there are quite a few things going on on the 4th. We will be studying until July 28...on July 28 we will be ready for a night out of drinking though. We might could go for a beer sometime but nothing too time consuming until after the 28th. We actually have the 4th off from studying but we were thinking about switching it with another day to go to Multnomah Falls. It's probably going to be really busy on the 4th.

What area are you going to be living in?

So I'll be staying on the block of 8100 on SE 35th street. I'll have a rental car (had to get one for the whole month to go back and forth from the hospital). I'll be there until August 1st, so we could definitely grab a beer after you're done studying. Good luck to both of you.

Also, does anyone have suggestions on a winery/vineyard we could visit on that weekend? Close proximity to Portland would be ideal. Thanks.

Glad you found a spot. Thats not too far from us.

We would have potentially offered a spot but 1. as of right now we don't have a second bed or a couch and 2. studying for the bar exam sucks and would not make it enjoyable for anyone around us.

As for vineyards, etc., we don't have a clue yet, so that'd be best left to some of the longer tenured residents.

as for the 4th, find someone with a boat, and get to Government island (in the Columbia in between Portland and the couve) where you'll find a ton of people camping and carrying on as they watch "the biggest fireworks display west of the mississippi".

July 1st-4th there is a Blues Festival on the waterfront that is held every year and is super popular ... especially if you can get on a boat! I'd recommend checking that out at least one day.

www.waterfrontbluesfest.com

Van Duzer Vineyards in the Willamette Valley is pretty awesome. They are also working with their two neighboring vineyards to create a walking wine tasting tour. I think it's officially starting the weekend of the 4th .. so if you enjoy hiking and wine tasting, it might be a good way to combine the two! And like itgoes said, the Dundee area is great as well!

I would imagine Multnomah Falls will be extremely crowded on the 4th. I think it's a great idea to postpone that a bit. When you do go, there is a scenic drive that you can take that will allow you to see 10+ waterfalls. All of which you can either see from the road or via a short hike. Multnomah Falls is of course the largest of them all and the most popular. Here's a link with more info:

Now that I've finally wrapped up my second to last term in grad school, I'm ready for many summer happy hours!

does the oregon aggie club do happy hours, or is this something we will need to organize here?

The only time I've been aware of them having beers is: Muster, Football, and BBall Tourny. I'm not sure there's a big interest in doing a happy hour, I suppose you never know until you try though.

I've heard from other Ags that the A&M club up there was kind of lame. However, Mrs. Ledbetter and I are the A&M reps for our small town. We have a huuuugge smoker and lots of brisket and pork shoulders in the freezer. I'm fixin' to get the old smoker fired up and it's gonna be cooking until hunting season starts! Too bad you Portland people are 5 hours away!

I watched one football game with them last season and it was fun. However, I'm the type that likes to dvr the games and start them a bit late so I can skip the commercials, so I didn't make much of an effort to join for any others. I don't really recall getting any emails for gatherings outside of sporting events & muster. We could always organize a happy hour on here and then send it out to the whole group via email.

we would be interested in that. we still don't know where any good places for something like that are though, so we wouldn't be much help in deciding a venue.

We live out in the country a little bit in Beavercreek- I tend to drink heavily during A&M games and prefer to watch them from the safety of my home. I'd be up for an occasional happy hour though.

Count me in for a happy hour.
I'm new here also so I wouldn't be much help with venue selection.

For anybody not subscribed to the A&M club emails, there's a game watch party for the SMU game.

quote:
Howdy Ags:

An on-stage big screen TV has been reserved for the Aggie's first football game of the 2011/2012 season at MacAdam's Bar and Grill. Game starting time: 4:30pm. Let's get together and BTHO SMU!!

In my day my class stole that SMU horse and had the cops after us for a month. We gave the horse back of course.... minus a little hair!!!

4 pm: Meet and Greet Yell Practice-

4:30 pm : Kickoff

4:30 pm on: Yell like crazy

Address: 5833 SW MacAdam Avenue

My wife has a meeting up there. I need to visit a couple restoration hardware stores like Hippo Hardware. We'll probably do Powell's Books and a nice dinner somewhere. Other than that, we're pretty open w/ our schedule.

We really like Marrakesh Moroccan restaurant on 21st. We like unique ethnic type places. Thai, indian, malaysian etc. Brew pubs are good too. We like the Deschutes brew pub in Bend, also. It's a nice change from what we can get out here in the sticks.
