I am making a trip to Northern New Jersey for work the second week of October, and flying into EWR (Newark Liberty Airport).

Anyone live in this area or have ever been to this area that can give me suggestions on travel options/times to and from Manhattan?

I am arriving and staying at a hotel next to the airport on Sunday, and have all of Monday off to do some sightseeing before the rest of our project team arrives and we drive to the client site on Monday evening.

Not sure of the best way to get over to Manhattan (other than I figure a cab will be cost-prohibitive).

Any suggestions on transport and places worth seeing/restaurants to try on Sunday evening and Monday?

Went to NYC a couple years back on business. One of the nights we were there, a couple of guys who had been to the city before took me to a bar called mcsorleys (sp?). It is basically a bar that has been there for decades and nothing has changed since it was open. Pretty cool to see. Interesting atmosphere.

Other than that, we used the subway as much as possible, because cab fare is ridiculous.

Lived in that area the last three years and always flew into and out of EWR. Just recently moved back to Texas.

Cab is the easiest, but the most expensive. Probably would take 25 minutes depending on tunnel traffic.

Cheapest but most hassle is to take a NJ Transit bus to the Newark PATH subway station (could also take a car to there) and then take the PATH subway train to either the World Trade Center or 33rd Street in NYC. Probably would take an hour or more.

Middle ground, and the option I would go with, would be to take AIRTRAIN NEWARK (the interterminal train) to the EWR train station. Then at that station take either an Amtrak train or NJ Transit train into Penn Station. NJ Transit train should be cheaper than the Amtrak train. Probably would take 35-45 minutes.
