I just got offered a job in Salem and was wondering what the area is like (I will have to relocate to Salem for the job). Anyone know anything about the city/area, and maybe some good parts of town to start looking for an apartment?
Do you have to stay in Salem? If not Roanoke is a stones throw away. Salem is nice just as Roanoke. In my opinion there really is not "bad" areas per se. Botetourt County is exceptionally nice as well.
I love the area all my family in Southwestern Va and I graduated from VT.
We move from Waco to Charlottesville Va.
Kids? If so Roanoke County schools are great.
Activities? Outdoors anything you want to do and you will not see everything that this area has to offer in a year.
People will be unique and more than a few Northerner transplants.
I grew up just south of there, in Martinsville, VA. It is a beautiful area, the Blue Ridge parkway is a stone's throw away. Smith Mountain lake is a great place to spend summer time. 4 seasons, but not severe winters. I haven't lived in the area recently, so no good advice on places to live or anything useful.
