Just graduated in May. Moved out to Bend for a training program. I'm involved in roofing distribution.

Official first day of work in Vancouver will be January 11, 2016. Wife and I will depart Texas at least a week beforehand, perhaps a few days earlier. Corporate sponsored movers will handle most of the relocation labor, but wife and I will drive up from San Antonio with irreplaceable personal effects and 5 dogs.

Will begin home shopping here in the coming weeks. Think we will stick with our decision to live in Washington, but not sure whether we will be out toward Camas/Washougal or up north near Battle Ground or Ridgefield. Office staff live all over the place - even have one guy who has a home in Medford, but an apartment in Vancouver; he leaves Medford early on Monday morning, stays in Vancouver through Wednesday night, then drives back to Medford after work on Thursday. Hard core.

Looking forward to working and living in that part of the country.
Depending on how the winter is going, that could be a difficult drive. I would anticipate it being slow going over the passes. Check the weather report often. Some places will require chains on tires. There are several places you could hit snow on that drive.

Yep, thanks agspart. Think we're gonna hang a left outta san antone, hit the I-5 in la, and head north. Probably best to avoid northern new mex, sw colorado, utah, and southern Idaho in early january. Would prefer the drive through the rockies, but not gonna chance road closures and inclement winter weather.

Don't forget about the ranges in Oregon too. Either way you come from, you'll hit some mountains.

If you guys want to take a short detour from I-5 to Corvallis when you come through, I'll buy you a beer. We can chat about culture shock.

Thanks DYack. I may take you up on the offer, but I will be on the back side of a 30+ hour drive, pulling a trailer with items we don't want the movers to handle and 5 dogs in the cab. Wife won't be with - I'm gonna fly her up there, as I know better anymore. Heh.

The wife and I (plus 2 little ones) will be moving to Portland in June to finish my training. Its only a one year stay, but I'm hoping to convince the wife a good lifestyle with ample outdoors opportunities is better than coming back to TX. Since its only a year we will be renting and I hope to be as close to OHSU as possible. Any areas to avoid?

I moved here (PORTLAND) in May, just missing the biblical floods that hit Houston.
This summer and fall here have been incredible. I don't care how rainy & cold it gets this winter, I have no plans of leaving the PNW. I trust that you and your family are enjoying it too, and that you're finding that the only place to avoid really is Gresham.

If you want to be near OHSU I suspect you'll be on the westside, in which case there really aren't any areas to avoid, I'd just find a place as close in to town as possible. Be careful looking at places that are deep west and require you to commute on hwy 26. That commute gets gnarly.

If you do choose to look on the eastside, then you'll need to be a bit more selective. But, I think westside is definitely your best bet.

Skimming through this thread, it seems as if there are a lot of things to do outdoors in Oregon? (Fishing/kayaking, public land, and skiing) I've noticed a couple of jobs in the Portland area, so it's nice to see some Ags in the area and great feedback of Oregon. One thing that has drawn me to look at the PNW is the unbelievable scenery.

It's actually in Beaverton. I don't know any ags there, but I'm sure there are at least a few. It's a difficult place to get hired.

Hi Ags, I've been in PDX since 2001. I don't know any Ags that work for Nike but my wife does. I am sure there are some but don't know any personally.

If anyone in the Portland area is getting married, I'm going to be at A Classic Affair bridal show in Lake Oswego on February 21. I have a custom cookie company and I'll be there paired with my friend who does cakes. A Classic Affair

Any of y'all happen to have any passes to the Nike Employee Store or know anyone who can get me one? I will be up in June and would love to shop there as I am a huge Nike fan.

Any other tips would be appreciated too, headed up for 5 days at the end of June.

Thanks!!

Edit: I know these are not easy to come by and it is a long shot for me to get some but I figured I would ask. I know I am not supposed to pay someone for them but I could technically buy them a beer or something right?

We are trying to get the Oregon Aggie facebook page active again and doing some more events. If you aren't connected yet, please join the page. If anyone is around on Thanksgivng, we are going to do the Turkey Trot. Not sure about a watch party yet (or if anyone would be interested), but Aggies without a Thanksgiving meal to go to are always welcome at our place. I get the club messages on the facebook page, so just send a message.

I have two questions for you all. Try to give the most "real" answer without the icing.

1) How bad is the weather, really? I've read Portland only averages 68 sunny days a year. I've been there in the Summer and it was great, but 9 months of cloudy drizzle?
2) Did your take home income go up or down when you moved to Oregon? I know there is no state sales tax, but I'm sure it's recouped elsewhere.

There is a potential relocation to Portland with my company in Jan.-Feb. so I'm trying to research now.

The weather isn't bad at all. Our winters lately haven't been bad at all. Summer here is usually also longer than 3 months.

Oregon does have a state income tax.

So is the Washington side (vancouver, etc. ) deemed "bad" or are their nice areas to?

Oregon also has no sales tax.

The nickname for Vancouver is "Vantucky." I don't think it's so bad, but the commute over the river during rush hour is usually pretty bad from what I hear.

Unless you work a 6am-3pm schedule, do not live in Vancouver and work in Portland. Just don't. The traffic is horrendous and it's not going to get better.

Weather-wise, it's definitely rainy in the winter but the summers make it worth it. I think January and February are the worst. The fall months are gorgeous and spring is rainy but not too gloomy.

I can't speak to salary comparison, though, as I moved here straight out of college.

I've been here almost 12 years and I'll never move back to Texas-- I say give it a shot =)

I'll be in a field technical engineer role visiting multiple construction sites around the city, state and up into Seattle. That's why I'm considering living more remote if possible.
