Franklin is a unique pocket of Nashville that I love being a part of at this juncture in my life - definitely a special place.

KY Ag....regrettably, we were in Franklin for a memorial service for a friend's 18 year old daughter...who died from a brain aneurysm. I knew nothing of the place...except that it was where all the Country & Western Stars and Dave Ramsey lived. What a neat downtown! We'd love to go back there...of course under happier circumstances.

Absolutely no contest between Nashville and Charlotte, especially for a single guy. Nashville has everything to offer and, as has been mentioned, you will not want to leave, ever.

I know a bit about Portland, Oregon. There is a poster, Marcel Ledbetter, who lives in Oregon and could give you more info. I have been to Portland on business and pleasure multiple times. Nice city, very livable. There are some very nice suburbs like Lake Oswego and Beaverton. It is a very politically liberal area. There are a lot of outdoor activities and the Oregon coast is just a couple of hours away. There are a fair amount of young people that migrate to Portland and then cannot find jobs, hence the joke that "Portland is where young people go to retire." Winters are long, cloudy and rainy. I believe that snow is rather rare though. Summer/early fall is fantastic weather.

I realize I'm way late to this thread but I love Nashville. Grew up in the Dallas area. Have been in Nashville for almost 12 years and will likely never leave.

Move to Nashville if you want to stay here forever. If you have plans to go back to Texas, just visit Nashville occasionally.

Same thing for East TN. Guy that was my Best man, born and raised in Angelo moved here I guess close to 20 years ago, the Brentwood(sp) area and will never leave.

At times I think about going back after I retire, but man I love the weather, scenery, etc...

I'm moving to Brentwood in a little less than 3 weeks. I'm super pumped about it and also a tad bit scared lol. My wife and I will not know anyone in the area, but will attend some happy hours through the middle Tennessee A&M club, find a church, join an athletic league or two to try and get to know some people (of course church is also for other reasons as well). Anyways, good luck on your decision and feel free to ask me any questions since I will be a new guy to the area and I'll be able to answer "new guy to Nashville area questions"

Can I piggyback on this thread to ask about where in Nashville is a good balance between cheap rent, close to downtown, and fairly young? It's likely that my wife and I will move there this summer for work, and I don't really know the area at all. But I hear great things!

Check out your thread you started. rbTexan responded. You may have to get him your email since you don't have any stars to PM with..

Bucees,

Curious to hear how the transition is going? I am flying up monday for a final round of interviews and feel confident I will be getting an offer.

The wife and I are a little nervous in that we have never lived out of state (my wife as never lived anywhere other then DFW and CS), so the move sounds scary to us. Just curious how you have acclimated and liking nashville so far...

Nashville sits well with a lot of Texans. I know many (Ags, Horns, Tceh) alum who have moved here and it's rare anyone wants to move back to Texas. YMMV.

Just got back yesterday. I can see why it's an attractive place to live. The people were nice, the city was big but not too big, it's beautiful and the cost of living appears to be rarely low.

The wife and I have a lot of things to think through but I am leaning towards taking the position and moving there.

Oasis,
I own a national physician search firm, and have been helping physicians with career choices for 25 years. Feel free to PM me if you'd like input. Congrats on completing your residency.
Edit: agree with Nashville comments; it's the Atlanta of 20 years ago before the traffic got here. Asheville is great to visit, but I wouldn't try to kick off an aspiring career there.
