So, at the risk of counting eggs before they hatch, I'm looking into housing in Nashville because it's looking like I'm the top candidate for a job there.

I was hoping someone who lives (or has lived) there could point me in the right direction.

I don't live in Nashville, but there is a post below about it. I do know a lot depends on where your work will be. There are several Ags that post on here. Also , Nashville has an active A&M clube.

I am over in Chattanooga, so I can't help much otherwise!

Have lived in the Nashville area since 1982, would be glad to help if I can. Feel free to PM me.

A lot depends on where you'll be working (downtown, north, south, etc.). Renting or buying? Price range? Nashville has a wide range, and just like any city you need to be mindful of where you wind up living. Certain areas have high crime, or bad traffic/road access. If you can give me more specifics, I'll try to hook you up with some ideas.

Well, the job that I expect an offer on is basically in the heart of Downtown. I'd love to find a good balance between cheap rent (under $1100/month would be awesome) and a short commute (Under 45 minutes would be ideal). Being in a fun area is a plus, but not imperative.

Both of those criteria are somewhat flexible.

I'd look in the Brentwood/Cool Springs area. It's one of the more affluent parts of town, there's a ton of things handy like restaurants, grocery stores, etc., and I-65 coming in from that direction usually has the least traffic issues. There are also a lot of places in downtown, but I think they would be more expensive.

FWIW, I live in Spring Hill, which is south of the area I mentioned. On a good day, not in rush hour, it takes me about 40 minutes to get to downtown. Brentwood/Cool Springs is 15-20 minutes. That would be where I'd start at least, and if you can't find anything there, Bellevue would be where I would look next.

Let me know if you need anything else, glad to help.

Any input on the areas in the east side of nashville like the mount juliet area? Seem to have alot of new housing developments, etc over there.

I have consistently heard Brentwood is the place to be and Franklin is a decent alternative. I am also looking at moving to nashville for a job.

Hope the OP isn't after the same job...lol

The problem with Mt. Juliet is traffic, if you have to come into Nashville for work. I-40E and I-24 towards Murfreesboro consistently have the worst traffic, wrecks & such during rush hour. The reason I always recommend Brentwood/Cool Springs/Franklin is because in addition to it being a great area, the traffic to & from that area is among the easiest in the Nashville area. Hope this helps.

Thanks RB, that helps.

We will probably be looking for a home in the $300-400k price range with 2000+ sq/ft. I would prefer a newer home 1990's+. Preferably somewhere that is only 20mins or so from downtown.

We're out west of Nashville in Kingston Springs. Kingston Springs is 8 miles past Bellevue on I-40. I've lived here since 2004. Where we are in Cheatham County has one of the highest sales tax rates in Tennessee (9.75%).

Commute from Kingston Springs to downtown Nashville is about 30 minutes on a good day.

Bellevue is growing and several new subdivisions are either being built or are planned in the next few years. Redevelopment of the long-closed Bellevue Center mall into an outdoor power center will start late this year.

We are paying 9-7/8 here in the Chattanooga area, but the property taxes are so low I don't have a problem with the sales tax rate. I think they kinda offset. Also, if we want to buy something really large we can shoot down into GA where their sales tax rate is 6%.

Yeah, the sales tax in GA is 6%, but they also have a state income tax and Tennessee doesn't. That being the difference.

Correct, but since we are talking Ags living in TN, we take advantage of those breaks that are close by! As long as we don't get a State income tax, I am basically OK with the tax rates here. Texas is at 9% or so now, if I am not mistaken and the property taxes are double what we pay here!

Yep, property taxes aren't bad in TN, at least where I live. And the weather's not bad either, especially spring & fall. Great place to live overall.

Random (only slightly related) question:
Is it possible to keep a car registered in Texas if your address is in another state (i.e. TN)? I got the job, so will officially be moving, but I'm proud of my Texan roots, and would love to keep my TX plates.

I tried to do that when I moved here (way back when). Got pulled over and got a ticket. Don't know if the law has changed since then but don't suspect it has, if you live here they want the vehicle registered here.

On the bright side, you are only required to have 1 plate in TN, the rear one - so you can get one of those "Native Texan" plates for the front, or a Texas A&M plate like I have on mine.

I think six months to transfer tags. No inspection and cheaper ins in TN

No, you will have to get new plates/tags.

Any of you guys live in the green hills area? It's one of the areas we are looking at? We hear Davidson county schools are bad but curious about this particular area. I have heard some say Julia green isn't bad elementary. Not sure about middle and high schools though...

Green Hills is one of the better areas in Nashville. I don't have a high opinion of Davidson County schools in general, but the bar is not as low there as it is in other parts of the city. If you're committed to living in Davidson, Green Hills is a good choice, although I would strongly urge you to consider private schools over public.
If you are more flexible as to where you live, and schools are a concern, I would recommend Williamson County (Franklin & southern Brentwood). Williamson County has the best school system in the state (by a long shot) and it is also the most affluent county in the state of TN. I live in Spring Hill, which is the southern-most town in Williamson County (the county line is about 1/4 mile from my house), and although it's about a 35-40 minute commute to downtown, it's worth it because the schools are so much better out here. Feel free to message me if you need/want more info.

The cost of living in Nashville continues to amaze me. I will e relocating there in July. Got a few home and auto quotes and it's CHEAP compared to Dallas! Also property taxes are dirt cheap.

Keep in mind, property taxes in Davidson County are about 4x higher than surrounding counties. Williamson is the lowest I believe.

Well, the wife and I are all moved in to our apartment in Brentwood. We are not fully organized, but we are moved in.

That said, we are looking for new friends. Everyone we know and love (only a slight exaggeration) is in Texas. Who in Nashville is looking for other Ags to hang out with?

The wife and I just booked a last minute over Labor Day weekend. Any recs on things to see/do and places to eat? This will be our first trip to the area.

Also, any place in the area where you'll find other Ags watching the ASU game?

The Country Music Hall Of Fame is worth seeing. Pancake Pantry for breakfast, if you can get in...Loveless Cafe is also great but out of town a bit. Rotierrs and Brown's Diner are burger joints that have been around forever - not much on atmosphere though. Great Italian place called Valentino's near downtown. Would recommend going to the Bluebird Cafe for a show, but I would check first, that places stays sold out. There's a lot of good bars/bands on Broadway downtown. I would also recommend, if you're interested, checking out the songwriter hall of fame in the convention center.

I know there's a Nashville A&M club (or at least I think there is) - I live about 40 minutes south and commute, so I haven't looked into that. Hope this helps, let me know if you need any additional info.
