Then you have to pack it. And boxes can be done for free if you look around. Plus will you hire help loading and unloading? Prob $3000-3200 going that route I guess ?

I may not even have that option. I don't actually know whether apartments allow for Pods to be dropped off for a brief period of time or not. Certainly the convenience of people dealing with your stuff door to door sounds incredibly appealing...

Wood,

It is hit/miss as far as apartments here letting you drop off PODS, so you will have to know that before selecting that route.

When I moved here from Houston, I packed a 28' foot Uhaul and towed my Jeep Wrangler on a full dolly behind, and drove from HOU to LAX then up to SEA.

It is a timely process. More/less a 3 day trip this time of year due to weather conditions in the Rockies/Cascades/etc. But it was an adventure....

If you do the driving, your best route for hotels is to use La Quinta's, as most of them allow you to bring dogs in for an additional $25.

If you fly, Alaska Air is the best airline to fly bringing dogs. The cargo hold is pressurized/climate controlled, and they only charge $100/dog each way. They have a **** ton experience shipping animals to/from Alaska, and they are the only airline I trust with my dog. They do have a restriction for temperatures in Texas, that if it gets too hot outside, they may not accept your dogs.

If you have other questions or whatnot, feel free to let me know and we can talk offline. Same offer to Brick, if he is still reading this thread. I threw the dog info into here because Brick mentioned it.

I have been in Seattle since January 2000. I moved back to TX in 2002, but missed the area so much I can back in 2004 and have been here ever since.

You will love it!

This is for Seattle - the rules/fees for using PODS in Seattle proper. I think you indicated you are moving to the Eastside (Bellevue/Kirkland/Redmond) and I guess they have similar policies.

Oops. Looking at another thread looks like you guys are already here. Never mind. Leaving it up for any others looking to move here.

Thanks for the info!

I found an apt that lets us park a pod for up to 3 days behind the property. The area is so fantastic and we managed to get an awesome apartment within easy walking distance of my new job.

How hard did you find driving the Uhaul while towing your vehicle? I sort of assumed I would be incapable to pulling that off.

It was not that bad, surprisingly. I did the drive in January, because I am an idiot, and going up the mountain pass near Mount Shasta in the dark while it was snowing was very unnerving since I could not see "over" the edge of the road.

The big trucks are very stable, but you will likely be limited to 60-65 miles per hour or so as a comfort level. Some of the dollies have speed limits (like 45 mph) so check the options or just consider doing 2 wheels down (I did all 4 wheels off the ground). Just expect that acceleration going uphill will be labored, but if you have time, it is a nice drive.

Got a quote from Allied Van for something like $3500 total if I pack the boxes myself.

I think I'll go that route and pull a little uhaul trailer behind my vehicle I drive up there with enough stuff to make it a week or whatever if the movers take forever getting there.

That sounds perfect. Remember they won't insure anything if it breaks in those boxes. But that sounds a lot better especially if you don't have to load it.

I think the allied van folks say they have 14 business days to get it there but seldom rarely take that long. Those drivers are in the business of turning loads and making money. Figure a full day driving is 500 miles for them.

Yea, luckily only about 1/3 of my house is coming with me so we are basically taking their poundage minimum. If we were moving the whole house it would have been closer to $8k.

Hi,
I don't live in Seattle but in the Portland area since 2001. The left stuff is not that big of deal. I love living in the PNW. Found my wife here and we have a nice Aggie club. You are young so move !! I have lived all over US and Canada but settled here. I miss the TexMex but I make it myself now and we do have decent BBQ. Good luck and let me know if you ever make it to Portland and I'd buy you a coffee

Good call on the La Quintas. 2 nights in a row now I haven't been charged a dime extra for the dog.

I used to take my dog on business trips with me all the time.

All my coworkers got to stay at the nice Marriott's, Hilton's etc.

I got to stay at the La Quinta....

But it was worth it.

Excellent tip as I'm about to embark on a journey to the opposite corner of the continental US.

You can tell they are very accommodative of dogs. Not every location allows them, but it seems like most cities have at least one location that allows them. Honestly, when I go on business trips within driving distance I'll probably start booking la quintas and taking my dog with me. It's that easy to deal with.

Good to know the tip had value.
I have only had good experiences with them and have probably logged at least 50 nights staying there with my dog on business trips.
The only caveat is that some charge for the dog, and some do not. Just FYI.

Brick - what did you end up doing? We've been out here in Gig Harbor Tacoma area for 4 years but are heading back to Dallas for friends / church community.

Finding a good church could be a big deal. We originally went to Mars Hill but we all know how that turned out. Got a buddy of mine who planted a church in North Seattle area if y'all moved. He's originally from the area but spent 4-5 years in Texas and is a good guy. Church is young with a lot of folks your age. Be good to help with the Freeze. Called Sideris. Be happy to make introductions.
