I'll keep in touch. My work background is in pretty similar, although I'm a little further in my career. I've worked mostly at zoos, aquariums, and nature centers doing education, coordinating, managing, and public relations.

Sounds good. We are excited about the move, even though it's most likely a year or so away.

To get away from jobs, houses and schooling- what's new in Chattanooga? New buildings, grocery stores, parks, museum, etc. anything like that? Crazy construction? Certain groups of people moving there- like the cali ppl to Texas..?

Someone who lives there full-time could give you a better idea of that than I could. I will say the aquarium is ultra nice. I know that there has been a lot of renovating of houses in older areas. My brother still lives in Chattanooga and is on who renovated many houses.

The downtown area has been getting better for years. It was nice when I live there. North Shore has seen an explosion in new shops and renovations. Saint Elmo has also seen its share of renovated houses. The nature center is very nice. I can't say anything nice about the zoo, as I used to work there, and I know how it's run. I guess it is good for kids.

1. New "whole foods" type supermarket on Northshore in the past 5 years.
2. Lots of new development on Northshore.
3. Best schools are Signal/Lookout Mountain or Ooltewah. The private schools (Brainerd Boys School or the Girls Prep. School) are excellent as well.
4. Downtown Chattanooga is great. Lots of things to do, tons of festivals, lots of parking. We'd move back if we didn't want to settle down here close to family.
5. Areas East of UTC are getting much better. When I worked at the zoo, it was in the middle of the ghetto. It's much nicer now.... the area that is. I still can't see the zoo in a good view, although I'm sure it's fine just to take the kids. I prefer the aquarium much more (worked there and volunteered part time for a year).
6. Hamilton Place area is booming. Mall is excellent - much better than the one in Hixson.
7. You might look for positions also with some of the state parks, national park in Fort Oglethorpe, UTC, or Chatt State. You may also look at the Creative Discovery Museum. There are also other non-profits or wellness or gymns in Chattanooga. I'd suggest contacting some of the local Ags through Texags or "Find an Aggie" on the Association of Former Students website.
8. My brother has rentals throughout Chattanooga. I believe he has 15-20 or so. Let me know if you guys would want to rent first; he's very reasonable with rent. I don't know what types of rentals he has (I know some are nicer than others).
9. Anything else - feel free to ask. These are just my takes from living there for 3 years (2006-2008). I love the combination of being close to the city and country at the same time.

Excellent info. Thanks so much. And yeah we will definitely be interested in your brother's rentals. We plan on renting for the first year or so until we nail down where we want to settle down.

I'll add a little- have lived here ~15 years. It is an awesome place to live. Outdoor scene is incredible. If you like trails (hiking, running, cycling), water (any water sports), climbing, cycling, road running- I just can't imagine a better spot. Northshore and downtown are fun places, but crazy expensive to live. As zoo said, taxes are cheap. I live in the county and pay ~$600 per $100k house value per year. Living in the city probably doubles that, but you aren't nickled and dimed for services like we are in the county. Public schools here as a whole are INCREDIBLY underfunded because of the low taxes. So, housing location is critical. There are good schools, but there are some rough ones too. I live where east Brainerd meets Ooltewah. That area is above average in the school arena. We have a Chuys now, so access to decent tex-mex has been covered. I am friends with our wellness guy at my company- I could at least get you connected to him so you could leverage his network. I'll try to check back in here every so often.

As an aside, I've met 2 Aggie couples at the Northshore Publix in the last 2 months. Thinking about trying to get a hoops watch party setup for one of the upcoming weekend games (likely Downtown BWW or TacoMac). If any are interested in joining shoot me a PM with your contact info.

Does anyone have any legal contacts in the area? We are looking to move, and Chattanooga looks appealing. My husband is looking for a job either at a law firm that will give him time to get licensed or as inhouse counsel for a company.

I know an Aggie attorney in town (we are barely acquainted, but he is an awesome guy). I could try to put you in touch. My contact info: Terry dot Howell at Comcast dot net.

Howdy! It looks like my husband and I will be moving to Chattanooga sometime in the fall. We are finally escaping California. Husband is a California native and wants to be in an area with lots of outdoor activities. I'm conservative and sick of California. Wish husband would move to Texas, but he'd get bored there. Chattanooga seems to be a good mix of what we want.

We have 1 daughter at Bama. We have another daughter that I think will go to UAH. We also have a son who graduated from A&M.

We will be pretty much retired. Husband and I both have computer science degrees. He's a VP of engineering for a small company, and I haven't worked for 20 years.

We think we can manage without working, but we might get bored without kid's and not working. Plus, extra money would be very beneficial.

We will rent at first just to make sure we like it.

I'm nervous and excited. Can't wait to go explore the area.

If you enjoy the outdoors, you'll like Chattanooga. Lots of stuff to do within an hour or so. Expand that to a 4 hour radius, and tons of things to do.

The Ocoee National Forest is only 45 minutes away. White water rafting, hiking, tubing, zip lines, etc. Downtown Chattanooga is very nice.

I currently live just outside of Knoxville, but we are thinking looking into Chattanooga again - its where we've always wanted to live, and we lived there for several months when we first got married. I went ahead and applied for a couple of positions I'm well qualified for (which is very rare for the field I want to work in and have the most experience in - I'm currently a teacher, and its not teaching).. so we'll see...

Howdy Ags! I am flying out tomorrow for my final interview Friday in Chattanooga. Would definitely be a change from Galveston but welcome the change. Hopefully I will be able to land the position and meet some fellow TN Ags.

Thanks! It went great, now the waiting game for the offer. Weather was great and was taken on a tour of the city. Loved the city and downtown area.

I've lived in Chattanooga my entire life and I was curious if any fellow Ags were here in Chattanooga (seen a few stickers on vehicles) and I stumbled upon this glorious thread! Anyone making the 6.5 hour trip to the swap this weekend?

The East Tennessee A&M club is pretty active. Based out of Knoxville. We just had our Christmas party yesterday, and are going to meet up for the A&M BB game against UT in Knoxville on Jan. 13.

IslandJeep, I live in Cleveland and work not far from you off of Amnicola Hwy. Maybe we can meet for lunch or something.

Also, will be in K'ville for the game next Saturday as well.

And, the baseball team is in K'ville on Muster Weekend. Will be there for at least one game and Muster as we don't have one in Chattanooga right now.
