I've seen these but have always been skeptical. Are there any other fees that kinda wipe some of the 1% away? Does all cost basis information transfer correctly? Any issues that you've seen that you can relay back thus far?

No fees aside from the taxes you'd have to pay on the extra income. Some institutions will want to charge a token amount to transfer out, but the receiving brokerage will almost always pick that cost up.

I have read that cost basis can get wonky, so if you do your own taxes I'd make sure to keep an eye on that.

I've found different brokerages have different approaches to keeping the customer. For instance Schwab was willing to match SOFI, but they wouldn't do it ahead of time -- the transfer had to actually be initiated to get their retention team do get into high gear.

End of the day, your money is worth a significant chunk of change sitting in their accounts -- we're all very cognizant of what the worth is when it's a savings account, but we often forget that brokerage account isn't much different.

Never really considered doing that before.

So I assume that includes transferring holdings and not just cash, correct?

Meaning I could transfer my Schwab brokerage holdings to SOFI without triggering any tax events.

Edit: Guess I missed the April deadline anyway.

Yes, holdings and cash. Basically they are making money on new customers and potential sweeps of the accounts.

No tax events triggered on the holdings in most cases, though obviously read the fine print.

Here's the definitive thread on it: https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=196884

Some of the bonuses are just token $500 signup and the like, which most of the time isn't worth the hassle and/or losing access to trading for a few days -- but when the offers that are a percentage of your account pop-up that don't require more than 12 months of $$$ commitment, they can be pretty lucrative and free money.

SOFI's interface is clunky and non-intuitive and a far-cry from Schwab, so I won't be staying once the new year hits -- but i'm not a heavy trader like many of your so I don't need a lot of bells and whistles.

Thanks for the info, Joe!

I love wheeling credit cards and piling on miles, hotel points, and large cash back bonuses. Looking forward to wheeling brokerage accounts now, LOL

For anyone that uses Directv or Spectrum, then you can work them every year to lower your cable bill too. I do it every year for the last 10 years with Directv.

I'd rather ditch TV all together and watch grass grow than be on the phone for an hour just to pull that off. Direct TV has some of the worst customer service I have ever experienced.

No sir, you don't go through customer service per say. When you get the menu, press the button to "cancel your service". They will route you immediately to a rep. They will say something like, "you've been a loyal customer for so many years, if I may ask, why are you cancelling".

Perfect answer I use every year:

"Well, I wish I didn't have to but times are tough and I just have to save where I can. I just received an advertisement from SPECTRUM and I can save some money."

They will then ask if they can transfer you to their promotional department, say yes. They will offer you a discount off your current bill for 1 year. Thank them so much and say you're going to give the person helping you a perfect score on the survey. Saying that really makes the person helping you find you the best deal. Be sure and fill our their survey perfect though because it really helps them out with their reviews.

Then repeat same procedure every 13 months, easy peasy.

For those of you on Spectrum, just flip the names on the script above and it works the same. I have to do it for the elderly widow next door every 13 months and she has Spectrum.

Those 2 companies battle for subscribers and hate losing a customer to each other so you lower your bill.

I think I am batting 1.000 on times I've threatened to cancel a service assuming they'll work with me on a lower price and they've instead just cancelled me and I spend half the afternoon trying to reinstate the account.

Sometimes you got to be willing to go without three or four months and wait on the "welcome back" promo.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/yourmoney/article-14829401/intel-layoffs-thousands-job-losses.html
Quote:

Intel once the dominant chipmaker which powered most PCs sent an email to employees on Saturday, warning that job cuts are coming to its factories.

'These are difficult actions but essential to meet our affordability challenges and current financial position of the company,' Naga Chandrasekaran, the tech giant's vice president of manufacturing, said in the memo seen by Oregon Live.
Quote:

handrasekaran said the company is aiming to slash 15 to 20 percent of its factory workforce in July, a move that could push thousands of Americans into job searches.

With Intel employing 109,000 globally, that would mean 16,350 to 21,800 layoffs.

It is not clear how many work in US-based factories, and how many American jobs will go.

What, if any, impacts does something like this have on SGOV or other treasury vehicles?

There's others on here that knows more than me about the treasury market but I'll shoot from the hip. If those funds dump US treasuries, then yields will skyrocket and go even higher for issuance of more debt in order to get countries to buy them. We need them to fund our overspending or the whole house of cards collapse. That's why it's imperative that we massive gut spending or we collapse. That said, the uniparty in DC only care about re-election and stealing from the taxpayers. Our Forefathers would've executed these thieves in DC decades ago.

Hong Kong owns $226B of US debt.

We have issued $12.2T YTD

So while it would not be good, they really aren't one of the more worrisome entities. The one that would really matter is Japan.

And the treasury has been stepping in with buybacks of its own debt to make sure a lot of that actually moves and rates don't rocket.

Bought a put option (1 contract) on SLV (silver) a few days ago…jeez didn't realize the delta was so high on that….moved about 38% in my favor this morning and got out and I think the stock from my entry had only moved around 1%.

That was neat.

It's a premium burn kind of day.

NVDA $145 calls, once up 2x, likely to expire worthless. Should have known better than to pick quad witch as the expiration. Rookie mistake.

WMT $95 puts - Also going to be worthless. Sideways grind. Still think WMT hits $90.

Those were both bought on small risk for 2-4x potential gains. Can't win em all. Still sucks to lose.
