How do you track the VIX? I see you can google it, but is there some way to track it in your watchlist with your stocks?

VIXY
VIXM
UVXY
VXX

VIX. Learn something new each day.

Back when I was a bigger clown than I am now, I was day trading UVXY options...having no clue what UVXY was or what the VIX was. Worked out really well until it didn't. I think that Scottrade IRA closed with about $52 in it...down from about $35k.

NVDA - so ready

What say you 4 months later? I think it has a chance of another climb soon. My amateur skills suggest to me that we have a good chance to get 195 or above by Nov 7 (potentially a good bit higher on any catalyst news). But if there are any major macro drawdowns with conviction or bad news I could see a path to just above 150 by 11/7.

Watching a potential ending diagonal forming to the upside. $198-$205 upside range. If it completes there and goes no higher, could retrace back to $165-$175 by end of year.

Very similar to what I was watching same time last year when I said it had a good chance to attack $90 in the first part of 2025.

I have most of my $$ in a SEP through work managed by pros. I have a separate acct. that is mostly conservative stuff but I also buy stupid **** and not worry about it. Bitcoin, AI stocks.

$52 here I come.

Wish I'd have bought more gold when it was $2500. I probably need to get those coins out of my nightstand and get a new safe. (old one broke and had to hire a locksmith to drill it. )

Theres been plenty of posts about VIX and its related tools on here. Use the search function.

VIX - Tracks the expected volatility of SPX by looking at short dated (<30 days) SPX options.
VXX - Tracks the performance of short-term VIX futures (VX). Decaying product that will trend to $0. When it pops and forms an upside pattern, that's the tell on potential volatility events incoming.
UVIX - Tracks volatility of long dated SPX options and is a 2x levered instrument. Can create massive gains as fast as absolute wipeouts. Never buy and hold this thing. Use for short term only.
UVXY - Same as VXX but offers 1.5x leverage. Riskier than VXX with crazier decay.

Also, VIX options settle European style.

Quote:

The settlement process for VIX options is a crucial aspect of trading, and it's essential to grasp the process to avoid any potential issues. The settlement price is determined by the VIX index value at the close of trading on the third Friday of the month, or the next business day if it falls on a holiday. The settlement value is cash settled, as there is no way of delivering the underlying, which is just an index. The settlement value is determined by the Special Opening Quotation (SOQ) of VIX, which is derived from opening prices or quotes of S&P500 options used for VIX calculation at the open on VIX options expiration date. If there is no trade on a particular S&P500 option, the average of bid and ask will be used. The settlement amount of a particular VIX option is the difference between the Special Opening Quotation and the option's strike price, times 100 dollars. The cash from VIX options settlement is delivered on the business day following expiration date.

I agree with this. Most of my investments are with a professional but I still handle some on my own for fun, hopefully profit and fun $$$.Thanks to this board and Covid my fun money has gone through the roof.

All I know is that I'm completely slaughtering my professional FA this year. In the 3 accounts I self-manage, I'm up 36%, 24%, and 21%. He's a good guy and does OK with standard investing strategy.

No patting myself on the back - - nearly all of the above is based on recommendations from Texags. I mean, I just made $4XXX on a 60 day trade on Gatekeeper GKPRF. That's absurd. No way I find that play anywhere except on here.

Still too early to tell but LMB (Limbach holdings) looks as if it may have found a bottom the past week or so and has a decent probability of rising from where it's at ($92) to about $105-110 or higher next month if it can break through and hold $95 by the end of October. From there it will probably bounce on Nov 3 earnings to either the aforementioned range or get slapped back down to $90....or if earnings brings really bad news $80-82 with the likely worst case scenario in the short term $75.

If you want to play it I would set the stop at $88 because past there and it's not a long ride down to $80-82.

Personally I would play it on shares and not options due to low volumes and wide bid ask.

To be fair, in a bull market most people will outpace an average FA.

I do my own investing, but bear markets are where a FA/CFP would likely show their value.

Lol I can sort of relate to this. I have a 401k that I am more conservative with that is just invested in a total stock market ETF. That one is up 16% over one year.

My personal brokerage account that is a mix of things I read about personally or on Texags is up 200% over one year. Most of that is the insane gains from OKLO. Now my only problem is why didn't I put more money in my personal brokerage account?

I was about to post that. a 1000 pt swing without any pullback. When it does drop, it hits the 9 DMA and then bounces higher. I don't rec options but for you degenerate gamblers like FJ out there and want a lotto. I'd target 0DTE or 1DTE SPY calls because I think this thing explodes higher into the close.

Remember: Lottos should be expected to go to zero so don't hang yourselves. This is a zero or hero trade.

Eh, my account he managed looked like ass during those pullbacks in 2020 and 2022. Rode it down, rode it back up. We are set for a meeting next week. When he asks about the 3 accounts I manage he'll get a surprise when I update the balances.

The account I handle is also slaughtering my CFP. But there is a big difference.

My CFP has our SEP/IRAs. I want him to be more conservative than I am with a much smaller balance in my play account. No tax deduction if a large investment fails in our IRAs. He also has our larger traditional investment account. I think I handed these off to him around 3-4 years ago and these accounts are up 50%. I can certainly live with that.

And I got to the point where I wanted to spend more time on the golf course and traveling than looking at my accounts and read a lot of material to make educated decisions. That freedom is worth a lot to me.

0dte 6700 calls are $0.30. Those could 10x in a single 10 min candle. Size for zero like you say.
If this post is on the B&I forum, lighten up it's just money!
