OG value and stability since before the Great Depression. I'm also a big believer that "mindless" indexing has the capacity to (if it becomes widespread enough) distort the values of equities within the individual indexes leading to subpar returns in comparison to investors who select equities based on the intrinsic value of the equity.

VTI and also the healthcare sector ETF.

I like VTI for broad exposure.

I like VHT as both a play in an expensive and growing market segment, and as a hedge against my growing out of pockets costs. I mean eff all these inscos our HR departments lock us into and eff their pharmacy benefit overlords. But if they are making money, then i want a piece of it too.

If Vanguard is going to be all you buy and you have to post on a message board to ask for a favorite then you need to sign up for their Personal Advisor Service. There are people who don't need an advisor and then there are those that think they don't.

I use PAS and think it's a fantastic service. As someone who tinkers I really enjoy the plan and will say they have made functional improvements with the website.

Are ETF's generally better than equivalent index funds?

New to TexAgs but great forums here.

ETFs have some tax benefits vs mutual funds and I prefer to hold them in taxable accounts vs. funds.

One thing I tell folks is owning a mutual fund in a taxable account vs an ETF can have other difficult to measure impacts to investing. With an ETF if the market is up or down you can take losses/gains as quickly as selling a stock. With mutual funds, you are required to wait until the fund settles at the close of market. It may not seem like much, but if you are the kind of person that could react poorly to an up/down market event (that is selling emotionally) mutual funds can help slightly here because you really cannot get out instantly like an ETF. That sell order you put in at 10am for the fund, may be something you decide to cancel at 2pm after cooling off. The "speedbump" that the mutual fund offers could be better depending on the investor even if it causes some increase in tax burden.

I was hoping that ETF would be more tax friendly than index funds, but so far I have not found that to be true. In my case, I've been investing in Vanguard index funds for a lot of years (never selling, just buying), and the end of year tax bill has been getting quite high. So. I started playing around buying ETF's as well hoping that I'd see a huge tax savings. Can't say I did this past year.

Not at all, but you have to know getting investment advice from a message board, even one composed of Aggies, is a crapshoot at best. Look at all the different ideas you are getting. You can call Vanguard, let them profile you and get a decent answer from a trained and licensed advisor. t\To me asking a group for their favorite investing idea is like asking a bunch of Aggies what I should major in before I apply for admission.

I came here to post a THANK YOU to those that helped me about a month ago with advice. I invested $11,000 last week in VTI and have made over $500 in a week.

I closed my account with Edward Jones and make more in a week with VTI than I ever made there.

I appreciate this board....I'm terrible with finance stuff like this.

I've enjoyed VYM among others.

Does anyone know if any Vanguard funds have $WWR as a holding? <grin>

Primecap (VPMCX and VPMAX)
Closed to new investors but they do open up occasionally.
They only allow you to add $25k per year per account right now.

Large and mid cap growth stocks run by typically 3 fund managers that pick the stocks. They buy undervalued stuff and then hold for years. Average annual returns since 2001 higher than S&P 500 although it hasn't beat it the last couple of years.

The distributions especially LT Cap Gains are occasionally large so watch it if considering for taxable accounts.

Sorry for the bump, but should one be investing taxable money into VTI? I have seen certain vanguard funds should primarily be used for pre-tax accounts, but wasn't sure if VTI was a good vehicle to lock up after tax money in. If not, would appreciate any good mutual fund / ETF recommendations for after tax dollars.
